Geek night out for StarWars Episode III
2005 at 07.50 am posted by Veerle Pieters
It might come to a bit of a surprise to some of you since not a lot of girls do love Sci-Fi movies. At least I don’t know any who like Star Trek or StarWars. I’ve always been a fan of movies where a lot of fantasy is involved. It started all when I got to know my boyfriend, he is a Star Trek fan and so I was completely sold from the first Star Trek episode. You could say I’m a ‘late-flower’ into the world of Sci-Fi.
It’s not that I am a fanatic fan, I don’t own any Sci-Fi DVDs, could be due to the fact that we only recently bought a DVD player. Although I hate missing a Star Trek episode and I really can’t wait to see StarWars Episode III (the digital version!). Both Star Trek or StarWars aren’t to compare of course, both are totally different, but I bet that most of you who love Star Trek will love StarWars, but I’m sure it doesn’t go vice versa. Not everybody love both, they are so totally different. And it’s not that I love every bit of Sci-Fi that comes out, there is a lot of crap too.
So I was really glad that I could refresh my memory last week since they re-aired Episode I - The Phantom Menace and Episode II - Attack of the Clones.
What I love about StarWars is the combination of action, fantasy and humor, the nice sceneries, the costumes, the eye for detail and design and of course all the weirdo funny characters. Maybe some of you will rather find Jar Jar Binks a bit annoying, but I really love him, he’s one of my favorites. Loved the scene where he did his tongue trick ;-) Well there are too many things to mention that I love, I could go on and on :-)
Looking forward to seeing my questions being answered Thursday evening. Questions that were in my head since I first encountered StarWars. The idea of meeting again all started on Tiger night (in an Irish pub). So I’m actually also looking forward to the drink and geeky talk afterwards. May the force be with you!

You do realise we’re going to have to take your geek badge away from you, right?

Veerle, I’ll let you know if the movie was any good on Thursday morning, since I am going to see EIII on Wednesday the 18th at a special pre-premiere screening (not that I expect it to be bad). And also check some cool audio of the Mace/Palpatine action on my weblog…

Yes, very nice indeed to see you blog about Star Wars. It’s nice when people don’t feel like they have to be conservative all the time. I’m looking forward to seeing this, its quite weird actually, I think almost everyone is looking forward to seeing this, even some people I know who arent Star Wars fans a dying to see this. I hope I manage to get the Wednesday screening, i gotta stay up late though!

Hmphh. I’m a girl (well, I was once) and I’m still female… and I have been a Science Fiction fan since, well, since. I’m mostly into reading sf but I very much like Star Trek and also Babylon 5. Star Wars is lovely eye candy but I don’t consider it really sf (“s"as in speculative). It’s more like a fairy tale for children with sf gadgets and imagery. Not to say it isn’t entertaining but it gives me less food for thought afterwards. I will see episode III when it comes out in DVD, like all the others. Just to assure you that you are not alone.

Here’s another female into sci-fi! You really are by no means alone Veerle. I love the sense of adventure, imagination and social commentary sci-fi is allowed to more freely express than other literary/film genres.
I’ve LOVED Star Wars since I saw it when I was 8 (that was just a bit after it came out). I guess I’m my most geeky about Star Wars, but still I’m not a comic book or save the action figure in the original packaging kind of geek. However, I will be sitting for hours in line Wednesday in hopes of getting a good seat at midnight! Can’t wait! BTW, I also like Star Trek too.
Have a great time Thursday!

Yay for geek girls! Yay for Star Wars!
I’m taking my Dad to see the final movie—since he was the one who introduced me to sci-fi in the first place.
9
Never knew there were so many girls that enjoy sci-fi movies! Maybe there is some hope after all.
10
I’m nicely surprised by all the female support here. Go girls go!! :-)
@Dion, thanks :-)
@AkAXaka, LOL! :-)

I’ve been a fan of sci-fi movies for decades. :)
Some of my favorites outside of Trek and StarWars:
Dune
the Dune miniseries on the Sci-Fi channel.
Blade Runner - Rutger Hauer and Harrison Ford.
12
Blade Runner, yeah gotta love that. Mad Max as well, although more post-apocalyptic still a classic.

Veerle, if you’re into Star Wars, you really have to check this out: http://sonypictures.co.uk/movies/layercake/site/main.html
Revelations is a high quality fan film set in the Star Wars universe. 3 Years in the making, $20.000 usd, and the volunteer effort of an international development team!
14
Euh, let me get this right. The correct address for ‘Star Wars: Revelations’ is here:
http://www.panicstruckpro.com/revelations/revelations_movie.html
The address in my previous comment points to the official ‘Layer Cake’-site, the best movie of 2005 I’ve seen so far…
15
How could I forget B5? And Crusade?
Or SG-1 and SG-Atlantis? Or Battlestar Galactica.
16
Yes - I like science fiction movies, too, and am a female, too but I know some of my friends are not as into sci-fi. Star Wars is good, although I thought the original Star Wars was better in some ways than the new ones, but still the scenery is out of this world, so to speak. I will have to go see this newest version. Yoda was one of my favorite characters.
I also loved The Lord of the Rings, and thought New Zealand was a great location for the filming of it. I think that people who are into the web design would naturally like this kind of thing, too, as it is all computer animation and imagination.

Longtime female scifi and fantasy reader here! I began with Asimov, who had some great female roles models in the Foundation series. Love ‘em all, including newer authors like Gibson. Loved Gattaca, love all the ideas science fiction can explore. Loved Marion Zimmer Bradley, the Earthsea trilogy, and on and on…
18
Wow, Veerle, what a movie. definitely his best! Great movie, great company last night, thanks.
See you again at another geek night out!

Hi Veerle,
I suggest you take a look at star wars the cartoon. I think you’d like it, especially if you’re looking for answers about some bits of the story that aren’t going to be answered in the movies ^^
(and it’s kind of action packed too.. much more than any other star wars movie)
20
Veerle, if you like star wars you probably should have a look at this too:
the veggie rebels against the empire!
may the farm be with you, always! ;)

@Obi-Wan Ken(neth)obi, yes it was fun hanging out together again, as always. The movie was indeed great :-)
@Erwin, ROTFL!!! :-) That is soo funny, I really had a good laugh, thanks for the URL.
