Don’t be shy hit that keyboard in honor of De-Lurking Day ;-)
2005 at 03.55 am posted by Veerle
Officially a day late (better late then never) but I only discovered this idea just now and found it too cool to let go ;-) Sheryl of Paper Napkin, the creator of De-Lurking Day launched this idea on her blog yesterday and basically it means “A special day celebrating lurkers, and exhorting you to muster the strength and bravery to click on that comment button and end the deafening silence.”
Today it’s time to come out of the closet and express yourself in my comments ;-) I know you’re out there, so cross that boundary and make me feel proud and fill up those comments. Say it out loud: hi I am ... and I am a lurk-aholic ;-)
(small) UPDATE : a quick calculation, most days I have around 1.000 - 1.200 visitors ... in other words a LOT of you out there won’t confess their ‘problem’ :-P So a triple digit shouldn’t be too hard to achieve since this means that only about 10% must dare to express themselves :-)

Interesting idea!
Here I am commenting on your site. I am from Brazil and I really enjoy your writings and the style of your blog. Your tutorials are amazing and I only hope that you keep them coming in 2005.

Hi, this is M. from Utrecht, NL (this is Anonymous Lurk-aholics, right). I love your site; we share a number of interests: realhousemusic(tm), I’m a webdeveloper (well, it’s related to designing) and I love Apple too (even though I have to work on MS).
When will the AL meeting be???
4
Scottish lurker here, I enjoy your tips and tutorials, being an independent (web) designer myself. Keep ‘em coming!
5

15
Hello, my name is Shawn and I live in Missouri. I have been lurking around here for a good 6 months now. Thank you for the opportunity to open the basement door. You’ve got a great blog here and I adore your Illustrator tutorials as I am just now learning the program. Cheers to you.
16
Hi Veerle & fellow lurkers. London lurker here, been on the site for about a year now, and following via the ownders of RSS and Bloglines. No site at the moment but have one in the works :)
17
Hi there :) I’m a day late on the De-Lurking day thing as well. So here I am saying hello. I just found you because someone linked you on a dooce.com entry. Your site is wonderful and I love your tutorials. You make it look so easy.
Keep it up!
18
Hi… this is Canadian lurker Rolf here. I just found your blog a few weeks ago, and it just blows me away. This is the most useful and timely content I’ve ever seen on a blog. Keep up the great work!
19
Currently lurking back in my home town of Edinburgh, Scotland, after a period of “exile” in Sweden. Long time reader and admirer of your work.
20

22
Hi Veerle,
Lurking from Ghent, Belgium - just around the corner really - i love hangin out here not commenting and I love your colors, code and typo! Cheers!
23
I am a regular reader. I enjoy anything illustrator related. You have inspired my re-interest in illustrator and I am now actively experimenting.
I hail the land of Britain and come from the North West of England; In particular, the city of Preston.
24
Thank you. Thanks. Thank you.
25
I sometimes comment, but I’ve never commented here before. I nominated you for the best designed blog over at the Bloggies. You’ve got the skills.
26
Greetings from Alaska!
I’m a regular lurker here and heaps of other places too… maybe I really do have a lurking problem. Though, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem, so maybe there’s hope for me yet!
27
Hi, here’s a lurker from Chile. I check your blog with bloglines. isn’t it difficult to get your readers to comment? :)
28
I am a fan from Des Moines, IA, USA.
I love the mix of design and programing.
29
Here’s a dutch lurker. I love most of the articles, especially the Illustrator/design ones. As I’m learning to handle Illustrator, I’m sucking the contents of everything I read about it into my brain :)
30
Hiya
I’ve been lurking here for a while now. You have a nice combination of content, and a stylish design, that always keeps me coming back! I’m a web designer from York, UK (Clearbar.com) and house music lover (though more Derrick Carter than Roger Sanchez).
All the best with the site, & keep up the design tutorials as they are great!
Steven
p.s. Firefox XP - Your form fields stretch way too far in (mailing list) and out of (comment form) the main content, for instance you get right hand scrollbars because of comment form!
31
Keep’em coming ... I want go to for triple digits here :-D
@Steven, about your Firefox remark… let me guess you have been fiddling with your font settings, right? I had this remark 3 times in the past and each of them did change something with their fonts. On my PC with WinXP (with Firefox) everything looks OK.
32
Could be font settings, can’t say I’ve ever noticed this making any difference, at all, but you may well be right! You could fix a width for form elements, seeing as fixed width page.
Sorry to post again here, but no contact info avaliable, please delete if you want ;-)
33
The thing is my form elements have fixed sizes. All I know is that it happens when you change fonts. On a default FireFox there is no problem.
34
i’m not gonna do that, sorry :)
35
A french-speaking lurker from Montreal in Canada. Je vais sur ta page à tout les jours. The tutorials are great and I’m alway thrilled by the challenge of making a new site usign CSS. It is good to see that the web is also built by artist and not only programmers.
Great job
36
I’m a lurker in Atlanta, GA USA. Love your site, especially all the tutorials. Thanks!!
37
Hey!
I’m Adam. I’m from Albany, NY.
I am gainfully employed as a User Interface Developer for the NYS Dept. of Tax e-MPIRE Project. :|
My personal site is AcuraZine.com… a set of automotive communities with about 50k members.
It sucks right now. Hasn’t been redesigned in several years. But I am in the process of a massive redesign that is actually coming along quite well. Unfortunately, it’s not quite easy converting vBulletin to valid XHTML+CSS Structure/Presentation standards. Ah well… Homepage will look hot at least :D
I lurk because I don’t blog. Guess I feel left out. I’m a standards compliant Web Developer but I don’t write about it… sooo… I feel black sheepish ;)
Anyway, I’m trying to stop. Maybe once my all my eggs have hatched and my chickens are in order, I’ll find time to blog about it. That would be nice.
Thanks for the site Veerle. This place is the cheese AND macaroni!
38
Hello, I’m lurking from Ottawa. Keep up the great work.
39
Okay, I admit it i’m a lurker, My name is Eric and I frequent your site but rarely comment but i’m trying to break that habit.
40
Peep, my name is Rob(-ot). Belgium [Antwerp] lurker (<-still have to find out what it means).
I like your writing about the small, but interresting stuff. Not how I have to do things in this way, but how you like doing things in your way. And in a female perspective.
And because I thing Veerle’s blog is a better export product then Brussels Chicory (endive) , but that’s just my personal taste.
41
Hi, Dutch lurker here :) l love your site, especially the design/css related posts. keep up the good work!
42
I found your blog via a friend in Los Angeles. Gotta love the net. I have to go 3500 miles west to find out about something 4000 miles east of me. i’ve posted before, but in light of gunning for triple digits. Rock.
43
Howdy from Austin, TX!
44
I left my lurking days behind me sometime ago… so this is a mere shout out to all the de-lurkers to get the count up!! ;-)
45
Hello all.
I must be a lurker since I haven’t posted in ages, eventhough I really like your weblog Veerle.
Keep up the great work, and a hello to everyone else out there.
46
Not sure how I found your site, but i include it in my “Design Blogs” firefox bookmark tab. I love the layout and the content is refreshing. There.. no more lurking.
47
Hi, I’m surprised to see that i’m the first french to comment here, but so be it :)
Thanks for all your articles about design, music, etc. that i can lurk every day ^_^
48
Is lurking the opiate of the masses? I cast off my lurking ways. I say, “Lurk no more, fellow lurkers!”
49
I’ve got a large lurker audience on a portion of my site as well - I like this idea!
I came along your site while hunting down some illustrator tips.
Keep up the good work.
50
As an Aussie lurking in Quebec (now lurking in the office instead of working in the office) and someone who owes you bigtime for your CSS tutes, it’s definitely time to de-lurk. In fact, as soon as I get my better half’s website up and running, I’ll post back with a link - merci Veerle!
51
Hi, this is Erika from Italy. I love your tutorials :)
52
Another Canadian office lurker. Always a pleasure.
53
I usually refrain from commenting unless I feel I can contribute with anything. And I rarely do. :P
54
Hiya, this is Jesse of jnewland.com, from the University of Georgia in beautiful Athens, GA. I love your design, your tutorials, and the insight you provide to the web design process!
While we’re all confessing our lurk-aholism, how about posting links to some of YOUR favorite sites to lurk on? Lurk-aholics love a blogroll or an OPML link! Here’s my opml to get the party started.
55
Kim Siever from Lethbridge, Canada. Not really a lurker, but certainly an infrequent commenter.
56
Greetings all! I bring you tidings from Houston, TX, the fourth most populous (but #1 most disrespected) city in the United States. I’ve been interested in web design since 1997, but I haven’t taken a serious interest in learning CSS until sometime in 2003.
I’m still learning so many new things; I’ve been working on a fluid layout for the website of an organization I’m involved in, and it’s been one of the most educational projects in CSS bugs and quirks I’ve ever undertaken. Hints, suggestions, and tips that I’ve received from this blog and other design/css blogs around the web have been extremely helpful to me over these past few months as I’ve progressed through the project.
Specifically from Veerle’s blog, I’ve always enjoyed those posts where, after she’s completed a project, she details the design process that was necessary to complete the project, as well as the missteps and different ideas that took place along the way. I just want to extend my gratefulness and thanks to Veerle for providing this resource. Thanks!
57
I’ve posted before but must add to the list. Keep up the good work. :)
58
Ok, ok, I can’t deny my addiction any longer :)
59
Late night lurker from Finland. Great site! Keep those tutorials comming.
60
Lurking from Wales, UK
61
Infrequent commenter here too…
how do you get so many visitors?
I’d be tickled with glee if 10 people come to my site on any given day.
Gee, do I sound like Sally Field? :)
62
Peeping from the Windy City Yo!
63
Hello Veerle.
64
Love your site! Please continue with tutorials - especially graphic design ones....
65
Hi Veerle!
I think i can claim to not be a lurker. I have commented a few times.
Your blog is a favourite of mine. Keep up the good work!
66
By the time I get home and check the feeds, someone’s already posted what I would say, so I guess this is the perfect post for me. Thanks for all the tutorials!
67
Hi Veerle, I received the Defected CD, pretty cool music :). Thanks again! So what to post here.. hmm.. sometimes I’m lurking, sometimes I’m not.. anyway.. you got +1 comment. :)
68
Namaste ladies and gents! Greetings from the southern hemisphere - Melbourne. Got introduced to your site by a friend when I wanted to get stuck into the world of CSS. I use your pdf file as reference to various handy sites which contain tips and tutorials.
- I know you have a boy friend Veerle, but you are a pretty girl :) [full points]
- The variety of people who visit your site seem super cool! [full points]
- I am a wannabe ‘Mac’ user and I think you use one? [full points x 2]
- Your range of tutorials are broad and easy to understand. [full points]
So yeah, there you so - as another ‘lurk’er, I have contributed with with this post.
Keep up the good work!
69

Ok, I admit it too… I am addicted to Veerle ;) My name is harvey and I visit your blog almost everyday. Just like some other guests I like the combination between content and the design/css. Keep up the outstanding work.
I learn a lot or should I say lurk a lot… :)
76
Hi! I’m a daily visitor of your blog from Hungary. Let’s keep on writing, I really enjoy your site! Congratulation! :)
77
My father used to say: “If you have nothing interesting to say, then just shut up”.
Hence my lurking, I suppose.
;-)
Cheers and keep up yer good work!
MichaelD.
78
Sorry Veerle, but I have been lurkin’ this one fot too long :
http://frank.taillandier.free.fr/img/veerle.png
no i don’t use a fancy font size.
what’s up with the div#commentform, i can’t find any rules about it iny your weblog.css file ?
79
Greetings from Czech Republic :)
80
@DirtyF, I’m sure you’ve installed some new fonts like Lucida Grande or something I can tell from the screenshot you show. Look at my screenshot taken from Windows XP with Firefox, everything looks fine. The font you see on my screenshot is Verdana, which makes prefect sense since the font family in my styles is : “Lucida Grande”, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif ...Lucida Grande is a Mac OS X font. Don’t know what you are talking about the #commentform, it is there in my CSS.
81
Hallo, Max from Italy here…
lurking is so refreshing, your posts are neat and clean, as well as your style, I love them!
C ya in belgium
82
I like to think of myself as a “reader” rather than a “lurker”. I only comment when I have something useful to say - rather than just “hi, nice post”.
Been a regular here for over a year. Love the mix of content.
Keep up the excellent work!

Hi Veerle
I visit your website on a daily base and find it not only entertaining, but also very inspiring and a great ressource base. Keep going like This!
Greetings from Switzerland
Rolf
84
Veerle : You’re 100% right, i got Lucida font installed on my PC and like an idiot i was looking for the #commentform id in the “forms” section.
I better be lurkin’ next time or even better ... switch :)
Best regards from France. Keep up the excellent work.
85
Technically not a lurker because I’ve commented here before, but I thought I’d comment anyway. So there.
86
In defense of the lurkers: It’s better to stay silent if you don’t have a meaningfull comment to add. But ,to be honest, mostly I’m lazy…
87
Veerle,
recentely discovered your Blog, liked it that much that it inspired me to completely redesign my own : silversurfer.be (i’m still tweaking it), i also added your Blog to my Sites Of Note list. My Blog is in Dutch however.
gMax.
88
Hi Veerle! Hapy new year! Hope to see you achieve your triple digits today! : )
89
Hi Veerle!
Greetings from a fellow lurker!
Have a nice weekend and see you soon.
90
Hi there - interesting idea.
I tend to lurk most of the time (this is the first time I’ve commented here). Usually it’s just because I don’t really have much to add to the discussion, though sometimes it’s just that I can’t summon up the energy to actually write anything. :)
91
Hello from Napa, CA!!! Thanks for all your informative posts - and giving me something to read at work… hehe =)
92
Also not really a lurker since I commented before but hey those 3 digits are close now ;-) Buzzing in from Belgium btw, I think you know me :-p
93
Most of the time I just don’t have anything to say, so I lurk. But, as a fellow web designer, I enjoy your tutorials not because I learn much from them that I don’t already know, but because you have a nice writing style. Inspires me try to be less academic or technical when writing user documentation.
94
yeah, i visit this site most everyday, and (almost) never write comments. :/
i am mostly a photographer but also a bit of a programmer and sometimes even a teacher.
i think i visit this blog main because of the upbeat colour scheme.
:D
(yes all the css tutorials and tips are also pretty cool)
95
I guess it’s time to delurk. I found this site while surfing around about 3 weeks ago, and love it. Veerle’s tutorials are great (I like the method for creating the glassy icon look!). Great job on the site, Veerle, and keep up the great and informative work.
96
Everyone in a couple of sessions:

102
Whee! Triple digits made!
103
Hey hey… yet another great post/idea here… It is valuable to have Veerle’s blog in your bookmarks!
A dutch lurker here, I’m Mark from Groningen, The Netherlands and I frequently visit this/your page. Keep up the good work. (You don’t mind using this same idea on my on page do you? I’m always referencing the ones I’m borrowing from :-))
104
Well I have posted a few times, but not as often as I would like, especially now since for some strange reason it seems your site is blocked at my job, go figure… So the only time I can read your wonderful site is late in the evening when my mind is spent and tired. Keep up the great work and stay beautiful!
105
shawna...does not lurk well. I can’t. I have to make my presence known. But kudos to all the lurkers who have come out to say hello!
106
Who is this mysterious Veerle? ;) Love your site and have been learning lots from you. Keep it up!
Dino
107
Another Dutch Lurker here. I read your site frequently, but must admit that I haven’t yet commented here.
Is your name truly Veerle?
Well done on a great site!
- Peter
108
Hi everyone, I think I’ll try to come up with some other stuff like this post in the future, this is such fun! Thanks for all those de-lurking actions here ;-) Triple digits yeah!! Hope you feel a bit relieved in a way… feeling like you’ve got something off your chest ;-)
@Peter, yes Veerle is my ‘real’ name, not hiding behind any alias, it’s one of those typical Flemish names. Even my last name is very Dutch and very common (as you might know).
109
Yes, I do know your last name, but I won’t disclose it, for privacy reasons.
I’d love to see you write more about Microsoft. I think it’s a great company, that just needs a couple of pushes in the right direction. I love reading pro-Microsoft rants ;)
About the de-lurking, well, it’s true what you said. The Internet is meant to communicate, after all.
110
Hi i am moiz from Pakistan and have been to your site for the first time ever. thus dropped a comment.
111
@Peter, about Microsoft, just to mention one positive note on their account… as a Mac addict I’m glad that we have Office for the Mac. Office is used by so many people of over the world. I’m glad that Microsoft has a Mac division. No other software company have so many people working for the Mac platform (over 130 people if I’m not mistaken). A great plus if you ask me and I hope they’ll keep on supporting my favorite platform.
112
Yep i’m exposed.
My name is actually Alex and i’m lurking.
113
Have commented once here before but hey, I don’t write letters to the newspaper or phone radio talkback shows either :-P
Lurking is fun.. ;-).
That reminds me I really should check my stats more often (I might actually see if anyone visits ME! LOL)
114
eh! Je fouine de la seule place sur Terre où il n’y a pas de catastrophes naturelles… Thank God! Longueuil. Québec.

From now on I will try to lurk less I guess. Later!

127
This is Lars from Sweden, your secret admirer. Well, ex secret admirer ;)
You have a beautiful and well-written site that never fails to impress me. Keep up the good work!
128
Hi Veerle -
I have commented about four times on your blog about other topics I read about on your site over the last few days, but I guess I am a newcomer, having just stumbled across it from a posting on another list-serve I belong to -otherwise don’t know if I would have found it.
You really have a lot of great advice on many subjects, though, and I was most impressed with your creativity and ability to articulate how things are created, and also to have sense of humor thrown into it. Anyway, this is the most fun web site I have encountered in awhile.
I was interested in learning more about your webdesign, on the main Duoh! site - and I was most amazed that you actually have the Library of Congress as one of your clients!
How did they find you - or did you find them?
I live in D.C., and it never would have occurred to me that they would have a web designer or company working for them that wasn’t American - but I think it is great! As I think I mentioned in another comment already, D.C. is not the most CREATIVE place on the globe! But with all due respect, there are some good designers here, too! : )
129
webdesigner with own company from switzerland who comes on a regular base

I’m Dmitry from Russia, just found your blog today, and found it very useful. Great material, I’m subscribed. =)
You’d have twice as many commenters if the comment form was ni your post, imho.
Good luck with the project, I love your short tutorials!
134
Hi, I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your blog. I admire your work and I am always impressed as to how you keep up with your articles and tutorials as well as your work.
I am a web designer from Venezuela, living and working in Florida.
Keep up the good work !
135
This is just so my luck; I take a couple of days off from reading blogs and I miss such a special day :)
Anyway, cheers from Finland from a frequent lurker ;)
