Girl with dog

2006 at 08.35 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Girl with dog

Drawing has always been my first love and it is only until recently that I picked up my pencil again and brushed up my rusty skills. This was started in a sketch book and scanned. In Illustrator I took my pen tool to redraw the image from scratch.

Girl with dog, viewed in detail

The final touches were done in Photoshop starting by adjusting the colors and contrast a bit and by using some filters and effects such as “Film Grain”, “Defuse Glow”, “Sprayed Strokes” and “Colored Pencils” to get the canvas feeling/effect.

Great style and wonderful color.  I also like the flow to the illustration exacerbated by the composition of all the elements in relation to the pathway and the sunlight on the ground.  All children’s books should be illustrated this way!

I like the style of this, Veerle, I think the shadows would extend a bit further, though.

Would look great in a children’s book, or maybe greetings cards.

I don’t know why you dislike this so much. If you would’ve said this drawing came out of a childrens book I would’ve taken your word for it.

The only thing that looks a bit strange to me is the difference between the dark and light patches. Is the light patch a hill or does it just look like that because of the circle you drew around it?

And, as Steve said, the shadow is quite odd.

Yes I did but not sure, it’s a speciality and I guess to be really really good you need to focus on that skill only and also maybe on one style only, which I haven’t (you’ll notice in the future). I love so many other stuff, like designing websites ;) I used to design seasonal cards for a Belgian publisher (in pure water color, so no Photoshop), but it takes hours and it doesn’t pay good :D

The path is on a hill that’s right. The shadows are not like they would appear like in the real world. It’s more a fantasy thing, like that there is a light source on the left that shines into the drawing but you don’t see the source itself. Hope I’m making sense here.

Veerle, I’ve been coming here for a while now, and I’ve always been impressed.

Lately, though, you’ve taken things to a completely new level with the re-design and this artwork. The texturing and your mastery of color combinations (both in the drawing and on your site) speak volumes about your talent.

I hope Duoh pays well, because I believe you’d likely be one of the most sought-after freelancers on the planet!

I like the foreground, it captures a tasty simplicity.
Now for the criticism: the background around where the trees are is a little
too repetitive, it could use a little more depth back there. :)

Nice drawing… I always wondered how they got the combination of neat lines and a ‘paper’-effect. I do draw a lot myself, but usually only in one program (either Illustrator, Photoshop or Painter).

/dutch mode off/

Greets,
Joram

Hi

Your permalinks in this section are broken. The URL http://veerle.duoh.com/index.php/artveerle/comments/girl_with_dog/ points to the last post in the “my art” section, not the “Girl with dog” post. To see “Girl with dog” I have to go to the second page of this section.
