What’s your technology Top 3
2004 at 03.43 am posted by Veerle
When I started Duoh! in 1992 I worked on a Quadra 700 with 8MB Ram and a 160MB HD and an Apple 16” color screen. I remember printing my designs on my LaserWriter IIf in outlines and then I painted my designs in color. In other situations I jumped in the car to get it printed in a color center, which was very expensive btw.
The programs that I used were Illustrator 3.2 and Quark Xpress 3.1. Most of my tasks where drawing, cutting and pasting (the old fashioned way!) and painting back then because of the lack of possibilities of the software and hardware. The Quadra 700 was one of the most powerful machines Apple had on the shelves in that period and it wasn't possible to design an A4 brochure all digital with photos in it.
Hard to imagine at this time because now you can do almost everything. The other day I needed to make a large poster (5m50x3m50) and the Photoshop file size was around 2GB and my dualie still had some breathing space left. Since back then several Macs have served their purpose.
After the Quadra 700 I had a PowerMac 7500, a Wallstreet (Batman model) portable, a G4/500 and now a Dual 1Ghz G4. So yes my PowerBook is quite old, a G3 250Mhz and that brings me to what is on my mind for today.
That's what kind of technology/hardware/pda, etc... do you want to own this year. You may choose something that isn't on the market yet. It would be fun to see if people think alike. Let us make some kind of top 3. Here's mine and yes there are things in it that hasn't been released :-)
- 1. PowerBook G5 17"
- 2. iPod (with a big HD)
- 3. Phone/PDA hybrid thing
Now that I had to think about it there is more and it was hard to make this top 3. One thing that I also would love is High Speed Wireless access anywhere now that we're daydreaming ;-)
So what's your dream top 3?

I’ve always used Wintel machines in my life, but when my friend bought himself a 12” Powerbook G4 last year, I fell in love with Macs & the Apple world.
I definitely want to get a 15” Powerbook soon (preferably with a SuperDrive, if my budget allows me), even if I keep reading scary comments about latch issues, dead pixels and uneven illumination. I guess I’ll wait until the next speed-bump to see what happens.
Secondly, I want to get a iPod! Don’t want the mini because I need bigger storing capacity, but since the 40 Gb model is out of my budget, I think I’ll settle for the 20 Gb one.
Finally, I need to get a new phone. I don’t need a hyper-technologic one, it just have to be small and bluetooth-enabled.
That’s it - now I realize my list is quite similar to yours Veerle :-)

That’s a good one ! ;-) your lovethiswishlist .com ??
For me ( if dreams do come true )
1.the 15” G6 powerbook with mountable iPod and add-on iK(all) pda/phone device . Told Steve about it yet ! ;-)
2. a fine lined Formac 20” TFT
3. an Applele Super R9 server connected to the world with of course iFiber ! ( look for gallery D )
(Icing on the cake ? some more interesting projects to hammer in some rock-solid customer life cycle management! would be too good ! )

My personal top 3 would be:
1. G5 + matching big Cinema Display
2. Video/Photo camera with 3 megapixel
3. iTunes Music Store for Europe
Let’s hope some of these things find their way to my desk :-)

Well like most people the list goes on, but my top 3 are (drum roll please ratatatatat)
G5 17” Apple Notebook
55 Inch Plasma
Dual Flat screen displays

Okie,
1. G5 15 inch (17 is just too big)
2. A wicked upgrade to my seriously lacking p3-800mhz machine (including processor, mobo, ram, videocard, and dual 17inch gaming lcd’s)
3. PDA/Phone with: AIM, an address book that syncs to my mac, a calendar that syncs, and a todo list that syncs (iDo?).
I used to have a g4/400mhz tiBook, but, sigh, the mobo snapped due to a faulty case, and I had not bought the extended warranty....that’ll never happen again. :-/ I’ve been wanting to get back on a mac for a while, but with my friend that just won an airport from the new store opened here (sf) and my new job running entirely on macs, it’d certainly be nice.

1. G5 with New Cinema Display
(where is the 30” monster everybody speaks of, Apple ?)
2. Wireless network with broadband features!
3. Something crossbreed between an iPod and a PDA.
Ziepe.
PS: Veerle, I didn’t add an iPod to my wishlist because I already own one :-p *grin*

What I would like:
1. A cross between an iPod and XFM. I want my music from my home computer to stream to my car, my personal player, and my work computer. I don’t want to have to worry about drive space or different devices. Have my music in one place, listen anywhere, no moving parts on the iPod (mine locks up on runs).
2. A way to log into my home computer, as though I were at home, regardless of where I am. I want to do a fast user switch to my home account (on an eMac currently) while on my laptop in a coffee shop.
3. Reasonably priced software. If I didn’t have en employer buying me the latest coolest things, I’d probably be forced to use open source only. I’m adverse to spending more that $100 on any software package and refuse to spend more than $20 on a game. I don’t play many games, and none when they first come out on the mac. I’ve already waited a year or three for it to migrate, what’s another 6 months? I really want a CSS based web design application like DreamWeaver, but again, for under $100.
Sorry, but the Design Collection is more than my mortgage. I use Photoshop and such maybe a few times a year. I’d even be willing to pay on a per project basis. No way I’d pay for upgrades and such. Photoshop 3.0 still does most of what I need (though layers are cool), so can’t ever see shelling out the big bucks. Almost all software is too expensive in my mind. (And no, I am not counting many of the cool free apps).
But if Apple can release Apps like GarageBand for under $50, no way my Peak should have cost me $100.

Ha yeah, wishlists. Always in for putting down a little wishlist, so here it goes:
1. True multifunctional digital device that can act as a cellphone, mp3 player, car stereo, pda, digital key to my car and my home, video conferencing tool and so on
2. A Mac maxi. You know, one that fills the entire living room and does absolutely nothing
3. Liquid Storage device that can hold more data when you pour more water in it.
