What has Apple been up to?

2005 at 10.15 am posted by Veerle

Apple’s press event at PhotoPlus Expo 2005 has once again brought us some new toys. It wasn’t Steve Jobs but David Moody that had his moment of glory on stage. Not the usual break down of company figures but right onto the cool stuff.

Let’s start with something that will please Jon Hicks and that’s the arrival of two updated PowerBook models. Let’s look at the new PowerBooks: the new 15 inch PowerBook will get a new display with 1440 x 960 resolution and his big brother the 17-inch will get 1680 x 1050 resolution. Both will be 46% brighter than previous models. Battery life has also been improved with 22% and a SuperDrive will be standard. Both machines will have built-in support for 30” display. They are available now. The new prices are:

12-inch to retial now for $1,500,
15-inch for $2,000
17-inch for $2,500

Finally the G5 gets a well deserved update too and yes I know the first question on your mind is “will they have dual core chips?”. The answer is YES, dual-core support and dual velocity engines and dual 1MB L2 cache! According to Apple this baby is a lot faster then my lovely Dual 2.7Ghz G5 w00t!!

New G5 figures

Let’s continue with some big figures, you’ll have support for 16GB of 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM, and you can rock up to 1TB of internal storage.

It doesn’t stop here since they’ll come equipped with PCI-Express (at last) and a new video card. Apple has been working together with Nvidia to come up with 4 new graphics options for the G5, including the Quadro FX 4500 - Nvidia’s fastest workstation card. Good news for people who are doing 3D stuff. The Quadro card can support four 30-inch displays! Boy talking about some screen estate and a deep wallet too :-)

So what’s available then? There is a Quad system that features eight floating point units, four velocity engines and four 1MB Level 2 caches. The beast is capable of processing 76.6 gigaflops, that’s what I call some serious horsepower!

Dual-core 2GHz PowerPC G5 processor for $1,999
Dual-core 2.3GHz PowerPC G5 processor for $2,499
Two dual-core 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 processors for $3,299

Cinema Displays have a new pricing model too, effective from today, the 23-inch Cinema HD Display costs $1,299, previously $1,499, while the 30-inch Cinema HD Display costs $2,499, previously $2,999.

The last thing was announced by Apple’s vice president of Applications Marketing, Rob Schoeben and is an application for photographers. Photographers don’t have a solution like Final Cut Pro but now they do and it is called Aperture, the first all in one post production tool for photographers. Featuring a RAW focused workflow, Aperture makes RAW as easy as JPEG, letting you import, edit, catalog, organize, retouch, publish, and archive your images more effectively and efficiently than ever before according to Apple.

Solid updates to G5 line, a small update to the PowerBooks and a complete new solution for Digital photographers so all in all not bad for a days work. What’s next, probably 10.4.3 and maybe a little bit further down the road the first Intel based machines (iBooks and Mini)?

I was already wondering for how long it would be that I would be able to say: “I have the fastest mac available” (I have the same one as you)

Those days will soon be over so it seems ;)
Not that I feel any urge to upgrade though…

I have been waiting for a PowerBook update for some months now and I’m very happy with this possibly last revision of PPC PB. Now I’m off to the Apple Store.

I’ve been waiting for those Powerbook upgrades, but I’ll have to save me some more money in order to buy the 15” model. I’m not sure its screen is brighter as well, the Apple website only says that about the 17” model. But the larger resolution and fast 7200 RPM harddrive option is cool as well. The only question is - should we buy these upgraded PPC models now, since they’re stable and have a proven track-record, or should we wait a bit longer for the new Intel line? I’m wondering what the Intel line will bring in terms of performance, weight and battery life. Decisions, decisions!

Come to think of it… the only new G5 which is faster than the dual 2.7Ghz is the dual-dual-core 2.5Ghz machine. And it’s only 76% faster at one specific task. At other tasks the difference is much less, as even Apple’s graphs show. It’s actually not all that impressive if you think about it. It probably has to do with the bare clock speed being 2.5Ghz which is actually lower than 2.7GHz…

@Jeroen: Both the 15” and 17” models have new screens.

Let me quote this bit I got from the Apple Powerbook’s page:

The Future is Bright

With millions more pixels than previous models, each new 15-inch and 17-inch PowerBook gives you a brilliant workspace that rivals many desktop monitors… etc.

Now I wish I would have one of these new 15” Powerbooks :-)

still, i do not think 465 more brilliant display implies both models. it appears to be only the 17” - which if true - is more than sad. the quote u posted is probably just an expression as none of the articles/techs specs clearly say it’s both. so all i can hope is that someone gets his/her hands on one and verify it is true. btw, i wanted to order one this weekend. :)

@schnuck: There is a link missing on my quote, right over the word “brilliant” that will take you here where you can see 15” screens have higher res than the previous generation.

I can’t assure they are brighter but they have at least better specs (higher res, greater view angle, and probably they are brighter too ;-)).

@schnuck and Jeroen: They both have higher resolutions, I’ve seen pictures on the web of a previous model and new model side by side and you clearly see the difference. Just don’t remember that url anymore :-(

Jeroen, I wouldn’t hold off if you need one now because I think the first model to go Intel will be the iBook, so until the Powerbook arrives it could be a long wait. In my PowerBook 17” there is a faster 7200 RPM HD that makes a nice difference from the original one.

This is my first post here, so forgive me ‘jumping in’

if you were ‘ever’ tempted to try out, or dare I say, upgrade to the new G5 - DON’T BE SHY, RAID YOUR PIGGY BANK, DO WHATEVER AND BUY!  :)
I have just received my new Quad core G5 (chucked in another 2 gig of ram) and .... zoom.
I did a test with my other mac - (a G5 2.7), ran the same tasks and the Quad twiddled its cpu’s waiting for the old G5 to catch up.
I might be extremely poor leading up to Christmas but extremely happy.
