Veerle’s photo imaging contest
2006 at 09.12 am posted by Veerle Pieters
A new week started and I hope the creative batteries are fully charged because it’s competition time boys and girls. Told you about it a week or so ago that I would do a creative contest to celebrate the launch of Expression Engine 1.5. Don’t worry if you are not that creative because everybody can join in. A good sense of humor is all you need to make a chance too.
What do you need to do?
The basic concept of this game is to manipulate one of the 4 pictures and to come up with something creative or witty. Geert and I had some fun coming up with those four pictures :) So you decide which one you use and you can do whatever you want with it: place it in a new background, add some text, move me to another planet... let your imagination run free. This way everyone has a fair chance of winning some of the great prizes
So what can you win?
Thanks to some great people I was able to gather a list of attractive prizes to win. Be sure to check the sites of the sponsors and let me know what prize you would like to win the most.
- 3 Expression Engine licenses
- 5 copies of Christian Heilman's book "Beginning JavaScript with DOM Scripting and Ajax"
- 2 licenses of StyleMaster, the CSS editor for Mac and PC
- 1 license of Inquisitor
- 1 license of NewsFire
Where to put your art work?
Preferably you upload your artwork to your Flickr account and post in the pool that I created for it and make a text link to it via the comments. If you don't have a Flickr account you can join for free. Becoming part of the pool is easy just click join on the right. If you do it like that I can follow all new submissions by RSS. In case you do not want to join Flickr you can join by uploading the artwork to YOUR OWN server and linking to it via the comments here.
But watch out if you use the "img element" in the comments, it CAN'T be wider than 560 pixels or it will break my lay-out and I don't want that. You'll not win if you do it, so you are warned :D
The files to download
Choose one of the 4 images to work with.

I'll be the judge and jury :)
I'll base my final judgement on a lot of factors, like creativity, placement of things, good copy, etc. So like I said before you don't have to be a creative genius to win, just make something orginal and funny and you'll get a fair chance too. So all you need to do is:
Join via Flickr (preferred method):
- Choose one of the 4 images
- Create your masterpiece
- Upload it to your Flickr account and place it in the pool "Veerle's photo imaging contest" and text link to it in the comments (preferred method)
Update: Don't forget to add your entry to the Flickr group/pool. It is very easy to do so: just go to your picture and above it you'll see the second item “send to group”. When you click on it it will load the groups you are part of. Just look for “veerle’ s imaging contest” and selected it. That’s all, it should now be in the group/pool.
In case you don't want to use Flickr:
- Upload to your OWN server and use the img element "<img src="http://www.mysite.com/myimage" />" in the comments (max. 560 pixels wide)
Further info:
- Add your preferred prize along with your submission in the comments
- More then one entry is ok
- Entry must be submitted before Wednesday 27th September

Awesome! I shall be entering for sure :P
2
Great! I`ll try to make something ;)
3
Could you make the source images available as TIFF files please? I’d like a go at this, but don’t have anything that reads PSDs. Ta.
4
Mark said
I changed them all to tiff :) They are smaller too now ;)
5
I’m with Mark.
It’s difficult to open those PSDs in Fireworks.
6
Super. Great prizes as well.. erm.. I mean, it’s an intrigueing creative challenge.

19
Hi Veerle, I’ve added my submission too!
I’m entering for the book :)
20
Would the EE licenses be for commercial or personal use?
21
I’ve joined the fray. You can find it here and here.
22
Bugger. I have no chance. I will upload it any way, just for laughs (at me) : D
But, I learnt something new from this so its not all lost.
View it!
23
I didn’t know you were famous in the game industry also !
A Expression Engine licence would be great :D
24
Here is my attempt!
Take a look!
25
I thought this would be fun and decided to try my hand. I uploaded my entry at flicker!
My first post here… Hello Veerle :-)
26
It’s a spin-off of that “lonelygirl15” deal. Enjoy!
First entry
Second entry
Was this the correct comment place to post or would it be on the flickr page?
27
Here I go...this is it! You can see my entry here.
Veerle, an Expression Engine license please! Yeah right...like I would ever win this...I’m not even a designer! ;-( Thanks anyway, Erika ;-)
28
I have the same doubt as #20 ZenBug and I also want to know if this license will last for a year… do we have to pay for it after that period?
29
Just posted my 2nd entry in the Flickr’s group.
30
She knows how to get a guys attention, that Veerle.
31
Oh, and I’d like to play for the book please. :-D
32
Hi all, good luck to everyone! Heres This is my entry

The licenses can be either Commercial or Personal, winner’s choice. The license stays but after a year you pay a small fee for updates.

Yes it’s ok here but you can also add yours to the Flickr group. It is very easy to do so: just go to the picture and above it you’ll see the second item “send to group”. 36
Hi,
I was wondering if we’re limited to only one image? I figured this was the case since your directions stated to choose one, but I thought I’d double-check since I’m seeing some entries with more than one of the pictures used together. :)
37
Tea said
You can use more than one, even all if you want ;) I just said choose one to explain what to do :)
38
Although I’ve seen much better ones, I have created an my entry as well!
39
My third entry
40
And this entry is from me.. ;o)
41
This is my fourth entry
42
Hi Veerle, Here is my second entry. Ok, I gotta go back to work!! Have fun and good luck All!! :)
43
That was fun. Here is my image.
:)
44
My entry
Good luck and have fun to all!
45
A heck, why not.
46
Hi Veerle,
my entry can be found here.
Groeten, Tom.
47
This can’t be right
48
I started completely somewhere else and ended up here.
Books are okay. Licenses are better, especially ones that allow you to Express yourself.
49
Thanks for the TIFFs instead of PSDs. Us amateurs can’t afford Photoshop.
My entry, guaranteed to win me a book. ;-)
50
Entering for an Expression Engine license.
Note: can’t send my picture to the group for some reason; it keeps telling me that I haven’t joined it though I have....
51
Here is my post, for an Expression Engine License.
Flickr gives an error, when I want to send the photo to the group, so I made a link to my onw flickr account.
52
Mark, all i’m getting is:
Oops! You don’t have permission to view this photo.
53
Hi Veerle, this is my entry
54
When is the contest deadline?
55
Or maybe even crazy ;)

Not really that much of a graphic person but I’d lóve to win the book so I’ve put myself to work:
Pretty Webdesigners exist!
.. They really do!
Will fight for webstandards!
Coupon for free talent!
58
59
Here is another one from me.
Stylemaster license (PC) please.
60
@victoria: Very nice, I like it.
61
my entry;) ... I’m in for the book.
62
Lol - these are all excellent so far. My vote currently goes either with the “Got Schizophrenia” one, or the Lord of the Rings one...but does that get disqualified due to Jon Hicks’ cheesy grin being included? ;-)
63
Here are my two: First one and second one
64
Here’s mine !
65
My Entry
If I win anything I’d like the ExpressionEngine license. :)
66
Hello all! My first comment here. :)
I came accross you, Veerle, whilst looking at the EE site - congratulations on your award. EE seems to be ideal for a project which I’m hoping to take on soon, so I’d like to go for the EE license please.
I expect some may not like my entry if the constenation on your Smoking in restaurants entry is anything to go by, but I hope they see it as a bit of fun and take it in the spirit in which it was created - I thought it would be funny to play off one of your pet peeves.
67
OKay, here is my submission, called “Veerle Van Gogh”. Nothing too out of the ordinary...(and not the only Van Gogh, either in the pool, by coincidence.)
What a great idea your contest is - there are so many entries now - it’s fun to see what kinds of things people have come up with. It is good practice for generating creative ideas. It reminds me of my Photoshop class.
68
@stjepan: thanks alot!!!
69
I just had to since this is what popped into my head when I saw the 4 options. I obviously need therapy
70
Mine is up on Flickr. Hope it is not too late.
71
Here we go!
In case I should win one of the amazing prizes, an EE license would be my pick!
Good job, everybody!
Cheers,
Mellou
72
Hiya folks :)
Belgium represented with some Sin City spin-off
If you like it Veerle, i’d love one of the books.
Muchos Gracias !
Jeroen
PS: You can delete the previous faulty post :)
73
This is mine!
74
Hi Veerle, this is my second entry
75
She did it for the freedom, Veerle for webstandards.
76
Just wanted to say very fun contest and people are turning in some really good stuff.
77
And here’s mine!
I’m entering for the EE license!
Good luck to you all!
Valentina
78
hello! i made an ultra girly contest entry, take that fellas! ;-)
furthermore i really enjoy your site, grtzzz !
79
Here’s my entry! I wasted all day on it =)
80
This is my second entry: I’m very sorry because your face isn’t very clear…
Anyway, thank you for your idea: I’m having so much fun!
81
Here’s my third entry… still crossing fingers!
82
I’d have to agree with valentina here :)
When i’m want to design something as an amateur (speaking for myself ;)), i always have a problem with coming up with a subject ...
This is an ideal way :) (although i do understand that design is also about creativity and having great ideas :))
I’ll be trying a new entry still :)
(and i’ll try wiping off some of them smirky :)) off of my posts ...)
83
Ok, as promised (not that anyone was waiting for it , but anyway) my second entry for the competition ...
Still up for one of the books.
PS: It seems some people forgot about the “max 560 width” caveat ...
Be sure to read the rules again !!!
84
I believe the 560px width limit was concerning images posted to show directly here in the comments, so as not to break Veerle’s layout.
85
you got me there, davey :)
there’s me again, accusing other people when it’s me who should try reading the rules ...
good pointer !
86
Thought I’d give this contest a try. Hope you like it. Here’s my pic.
87
Here is my entry
88
Hey hey hey ! Here is my picture
89
I don’t get it, I submitted my photo to the pool, but I can’t see it when I’m browsing the 35 pictures in there for some reason.
90
Jeroen said
That’s indeed only for those here in the comments :)
DeaPeaJay said
You have be logged into Flickr to see it. That’s why you only see 35 instead of the 81 you get as a member. I see yours fine.
91
...and here’s the last one! I wanted to use them all, to explore my creativity. So thank you Veerle, because I’m sure that everyone had a lot of fun in participating to this contest!
92
Here’s my attempt, hope you like it!
Great competition idea Veerle!
My prize of choice would have to be the book, please.
93
Hi Veerle,
I have submitted another entry here.
I actually uploaded it then made a small change to it a little bit later, (so that is why it is back at the beginning of the pool again). There are so many neat ones, it has really been fun to look at all of them. And it is amazing what kind of talented people there are out there, too.
I stated that I was interested in the CSS Style Master, too under my photo. Thanks for starting such a fun contest.
94
Hi there. Nice idea this contest. Hope you (Veerle) like my submission! I’d like to receive the book. Respect to all.
This is my entry:
95
This is my entry.
If I win I would like to give prize to someone that needs it more than me and buy a pair of chickens instead.
(Or you can auction the prize on ebay and get more than a pair)
96
Great Site!
97
Here is my second entry for a Expression Engine license please.
98
Oops, forgot to write the preferred prize. Anyone of the prizes would be awesum :)
99
Hello!
Here is my Entry
*klick*
100
Hey, the people here have created really nice stuff so i tried myself, too.
Here it is
A License for EE would be nice :)
101
Veerle - I’ve been reading your blog for awhile, but this is my first post here. Anyway, I posted my contest entry over to the pool - my entry - you might notice I used one of your tutorials that’s a favorite of mine...I had fun!
And my first choice, prize-wise, would be an Expression Engine license…
102
Here are my two entries, as always I see things differently :) but, that’s me
First
Second
I’d like EE, but if I get any prize I’ll be happy.
103
One more from me - just for fun.
at this link.
104
Hi
I had great fun creating my entry for the contest, I hope you like it too.
If I was lucky enough to qualify for a prize my preference would be either the Expression Engine license, the book or a StyleMaster license.
Thanks for a great contest :0)
105
I’ve problem to upload my image on flickr..so...there it is my second comp =)
106
What a fun contest. Thanks for having it. I just posted one! Check it out.
T
107
Here is my humble try:)
I am contesting only because of my geeky husband, who is going to die from an enthusiasm if there is any chance to receive a copy of “Beginning JavaScript with DOM Scripting and Ajax” (or at least Style Master, if there are not enough copies of the book ;-P), and of course, because I personally like this site and you.
;-)
[ Note: for those of you craving for higher-res image: high-quality copy ]
108
OMG! I love Anelia Kostova’s contribution. Not that there aren’t a lot of other good ones as well. But this one was super fun, kind of classy, very bold—she cut off Johnny Depp’s head (you must really love, love, love, your husband).
I waited until there tons of responses before, I started to track this post, and wow!! this is one fun contest. Good luck to everyone.
109
I’m glad I found time for the third!
Expecting
110
Posted my entry : Veerle@Gent.
Hope you enjoy picking out the lucky ones !
I’d go for the book, btw.
111
Just found the contest *sigh*, maybe I can accomplish one more pic tomorrow…
Not really as intended, but maybe useful as a wallpaper or so? ;)
Have fun!
112
Odd. I posted my pic, within the specified parameters, over an hour ago...and it’s not showing up. In fact, there’s been two more posts after mine that have showed up. :(
113
Seek the truth.
114
I fogot tell what I want win. I want Expression Engine licenses or Christian Heilman’s book “Beginning JavaScript with DOM Scripting and Ajax” :)
And this is my entries:

116
Funny contest!
You’ll find my entry here
117
Uuuugggg...I posted my entry last week but forgot to post it here in the comments. Hope it’s not too late. Great contest with great entries! Thank you!
118
And now i’m anxiously wondering whether ‘before Wednesday September 27th’ meant CET or DST or god-knows what timezone ;)) (Probably our Belgian one ?)
But i guess that with all these great entries, picking the ‘winners’ (aren’t we all *lol*) won’t be such an easy task !
Good work to all nevertheless , there’s some great talent ...
119
oh crap, I didn’t realize we needed to post our link here. I just put it in the pool. Here are the links…
One
Two

...great contest and really cool to see the different approches. Good stuff :)
120
Contest is over folks!
Thanks for all the great contributions. Now give me a few days to pick out the winners :D
121
Cool, maybe I will be winner :)
122
Second submission. Again, hoping for an ee license. :)
123
A few days??? I can’t wait to see who wins… :)
Cheers,
Mellou
124
I don’t think that i’ve won, but still i am verry curious who won this competition. It was verry fun to follow and watch all the entry’s so far. Can’t wait untill the next contest…
125
Here’s to hoping!
126
In Italy we say “Non sto nella pelle” ("I’m out of my skin"… sounds a little bloody!). I’m very curious too!
Good luck to everyone and thank you again Veerle!
127
Just realized I didn’t post my entry in the comments. Here is a link to it. I added it to the pool back on the 22nd. Hope my late comment doesn’t disqualify me. Thanks for a super fun contest!
128
Hi,
This is my second image.
If i’ll be one of the winers i want to be get the EE licence.
Here we go again… Image link

I don’t get one thing:
how many winners there will be??
12 ??
Hope to be one of this dozen!
[sorry 4 my english]
In Italy we say either
“non vedo l’ora”
[I can’t see the hour :]
131
@jgz: it’s the same in Portuguese, here in Brazil: “não vejo a hora.” Same meaning.
132
Good luck everybody - there were so many fantastic entries it has been a lot of fun to view them all. Hard to get to work this week, too.
I have to say I am glad that we aren’t going for another round though, as I am little worn out. I was getting concerned that we might have to loo
