Tweaks to Duoh! dot com
2008 at 09.07 pm posted by Veerle Pieters
In case you’ve missed it, we finally launched our business site duoh.com and talked about the creation process last week. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and educational.
The goal of the site
The general goal of our new site was, of course, to reach out to potential clients and show who we are and what we do. But, to do that, and have it reflect who we really are, we needed to explore some new territory and be a little experimental along the way. Some of you may think that it is easy to be original but that's not the case, I'm afraid. Geert and I opted to not go for the 'safe road' because that's just not us. It was never our intention to create something that would be well liked by everyone; if we did that Geert and I think that it would lack personality. This design conveys our joy and passion about what we do, and the fact that it got people talking about design in general makes us happy.
Analyzing the feedback
After shifting through the feedback via Twitter and on this blog, we learned that the feedback was largely positive and a few commented on the 'busyness' and the backgrounds on the right. Critiquing a design isn't easy as we discussed in the past because it takes time and thinking. When you analyze feedback it's important that you try to see through the personal attacks and only focus on what is of value and that's exactly what we did when we took another good look at the design. Nothing is ever perfect so we took a few things back to the drawing board.
The changes we made
The homepage
Let's highlight the changes we made to the design. We started by having another look at the homepage to see if we could do something there to make it a little less overwhelming without compromising too much on its originality. In the original version you have the green shapes on both left and right and after some tinkering we ended up with re-coloring the green shape on the left side of the page and creating some breathing room between the main content and right shapes. This tweak brings the focus back to the 3 examples of work and makes it less overwhelming at the same time.

Portfolio page
Next on the examination list is the portfolio page. In the original version, the background of the main section was the same background color as on the left and right with only subtle shadows and gradients to indicate the beginning of a new project. We both found that this was too close and could complicate the visual differentiation of the projects so we reworked the main section to a different background as you'll notice in version 1.1.

We also tweaked the look of the text in this section, in terms of colors and spacing, and created some more room between the projects; we also made the color bar twice as thick as before. With this iteration it is now more clear where the main content is and you notice more easily when a new project starts. The final tweak to this page was at the bottom where we reworked the navigation a bit and reduced the transparency of some of the bubbles. In the initial version there was the 'GO' bubble button to go to the next page. This looked kinda fun, but a little voice inside me told me I went just one step too far with this, breaking the consistency. There wasn't a previous link either and I was aware of this problem.

The illustrations on the right
With all the different resolutions out there it is hard to make things ideal for everybody and as you might recall this is a bit of experimenting as well to accommodate the bigger screens. The biggest change that we did is shifting the art with text in it a bit further to the right so that users with a 1024x768px don't see the start of it. We decided that users that can't see the art should be rewarded as well so we've created desktops of the illustrations.

Since this is a huge job to do all resolutions, I decided to go for the highest resolution, so you can scale it down to match your screen resolution.

User tracking
As soon as the site was online we took an account at Crazy Egg to track how visitors use the site. As far as we can see, people are clicking where they are supposed to click and they are scrolling down to the bottom of the page as well. The only concern we saw on the homepage is the RSS feed subscription. Not many people clicked on it yet. The location clearly didn't work as well as expected. I placed it there purely for aesthetic reasons, but wondered if it would work. We've now moved the icon to a more visible and logical location and will probably label it in some way.
The image below shows the home page in 'Confetti' view. Each dot represents a click of a visitor and each color represents a referral. Click the image or the links below to see this in detail.
It's clear that people find their way and click through to either the different categories in the portfolio, to other sections of the site or scroll down and click the next button.
Lost that “business” look.
A reader named Laura had the following concern about the direction that we chose, in terms of looking business-like.
Lauras said:The new “Duoh” is beautiful, but when I compare it to what it was before, it seems now it lost that “business” look. Do you think that choosing this design will be a risk to your sales? To be more detailed, before it was more edgy, sharp and sheik, now its has a fun, cheerful and sort of “bloggy” look.
If you read the full blog post we wrote about designing the site, you'll see that we intentionally didn't choose the typical business look. Businesses are made up of real people, and we wanted to talk to them on this site in a way that really shows who we are as a business and as people. We didn't want to be fake, and dress up in business suits, and talk with the usual business jargon. We never like to read sites like that, though each company is different. Our old site also didn't accurately say or show who we are now and what we do. People want to know when they look at our site or any other business site if we are credible. Can we be trusted, and can we deliver what they want? Can we make their site stand out in a sea of other business competitors? Do we have a process that makes sense, and would they like to work with us? Can we do an enormous variety of work, each one suitable for each business, and is that available in the portfolio? We think our site answers these questions and then, in the about page, says who we really are.
Just because most other people have a certain look for a business site doesn't mean that we should stay in those boundaries, especially because our creativity is our 'product'. We wanted to answer all those questions with our design and our words, but break through all the falseness and be ourselves. We think, so far, we've been proven right, at least for us. (We can't speak for other design companies). Since the redesign, our mailbox has been full of requests for work, and we're already made preparations to start new jobs.

Nice post, Veerle!

Nice, the changes are perfect.

It’s too big for my resolution (1440x900). The right part doesn’t fit in the window. If we assume I’m an unexperienced surfer, I do not know how to scale it down. The whole site just looks “too big”, the font sizes, the colored bars, it’s too overwhelming. I’m a little dissapointed, sorry :)
4
Hehe, just wanted to say that the artwork on the front page in my resolution, only says:
“STAY
STAY”.
Is this supposed to be some kind of subliminal message?

Hello Veerle! New Duoh site seems like a bit new approach to web design. Maybe I am still amateur and classic, also I haven’t read all posts on previous topic so maybe mentioned, but these three rectangle on the main page seems like a break in the middle. I think you might have had an approach to this situation with your big screens as a whole like you did on the background image!
And I want to see the background images! Wondering what’s hidden =D ! You can’t skip small screen users as mentioned. Maybe a hack works? I have so
cuteclients that might have said “why this background is half!?“ I don’t know if you have a problem like this =D.Also IMO the header background image is a bit crowded there (what did happen to simplicity =D ) also the color of the stripes on the left could be choosen a bit different! (Btw I learnt all these from you and now commenting for the master! =D )
And the rest of the website is beautiful! I hope you don’t get anything wrong there because I remember I ask for a help-critic for my freaking website and I remember you say nearly nothing because there were nothing to say (so-bad). You know critics mostly made on good works. Thanks for reading me so far!

Great post Veerle!
The changes make great sense and improve the design and usability greatly!
I was a small critic of the business of the original design, but the changes are wonderful. Way to to the criticism and use it so positively!

The new site feels like your personality and style as far as I can tell from reading your blog. People who aren’t designers (and i guess those who are too) always love to use the terms “busy” and “clean” - which are fine terms but i have a feeling they heard them somewhere and don’t really understand what is meant.
too much of the web nowadays is being templatized - thank you for breaking those bounds. It is inspiring.

I noticed the strikes on the left side right away. That is quite a drastic change if you ask me and i’m kinda missing them. I really liked the kedengbamboem-in-your-face-effect. The effect is still there ofcourse. The other changes are great!

Hey Veerle ...
I was definitively one of the folks that criticized the “busyness” of the website, no doubt. And I am very sure it wasn’t personal (rofl).
You did a great, great job here ... Respect. Making good changes to a design isn’t easy, certainly not when you have so many opinions.
But I love all of them. The site is really, really top now.

Excellent post Veerle, all your design decisions were really on the ball with the re-align.
I really love the way at 1024x768 the side illustrations are hidin, its like an easter egg for those of us with bigger resolutions.
Again job well done.

Great post - I love the way you are able to openly accept critique, and build it into a swift tweaking. It’s a beautiful site and I hope it brings you continued success.

I agree with Chris Basett when he says the Duoh website reflects your personality. I actually think that it is a mirror of your blog but i think your blog works better because it is evenly colored there are no surprise color changes like the ones i get on the Duoh website.
Moving from the white title to the dark background and bright colors just feels too much for my eyes.
I do commend you though for thinking different, its kinda refreshing from all the clone websites i’m used to.
13
Excellent work! I love the way it leads the eye now after all these changes and still keeps those very attractive images in play to spice up your experience from visiting the site. Also moving - poweredy by EE from top to bottom has created nice breathing space in the main nav area. Thanks for the detailed article about the way you work. Its big inspiration for us.
14
I like your artwork a lot, i also like the style of the new duoh website but it just doesn’t work, i think. It does reflect what you are doing and what style you have, but it’s too big. I have to say the 1.1 version is a big improvement to the 1.0 but is till think it’s just to big. I’m glad i have a 1900 * 1200 resolution to watch the new duoh website. I’m not saying you should optimize the whole website for 1024 * 768 but making everything a little bit smaller would make a big difference i think.
15
Great post, very inspirational!
16
I must say that it is an improvement for me, as it’s easier to read the pages layout. But I stand by you when you say that you chose not to follow standard business guidelines but took your own ideas to the design, which makes it really something of yourself. In the end I believe clients will value that more than another design.
Great work!

I dig the new design, but still think the site is a bit too wide, the quotes on the side are a bit to big and are slightly distracting! Thanks for blogging about your process and the changes you implemented - this is very helpful to young designers to see how you work and think!
18
Thank you for the comments so far :) It seems that I mislead some people by showing screenshots where I show the art on the right because it looks like they are an internal part of the layout, but in essence they are not. They are separate, *extras* for people with a big screen that can see it as a whole. Instead of forcing the user by hacking, scripting, etc. it’s up to *you* to set the width of your screen. Like I mentioned in the article, on 1024x768 you don’t see any of the text. It’s an experiment to think of ways of how we can accommodate bigger screens.
19
It is a clever idea, but it’s a bit of a shame you forgot the 1440x900 users (and I think it’s quite a common resolution these days). We see half of it, it makes no sense. And apart from that, the whole screen is filled with content, while whitespace is so important. There’s no “air” to let the content breathe.

Hi, I’ve been lurking for quite some time (the shy kid in me is still there) and felt compelled to finally come out applaud you for your redesign of Duoh.
I have to disclose that I can’t recall the previous version as much.
That said, I visited version 1.0 and loved it. It was totally unexpected upon load and refreshing once I took it all in. It could be because I live in Portland Oregon and winter has come upon us: grey, grey, grey:-)
Duoh 1.0 and 1.1 is a joy to experience, like great music. It is truly a wonderful reflection of your personality and style—your brand—gutsy, sparkly, pithy, smart, authoritative, polished and definitely classy.
I think the tweaks you made are spot on especially the adjustments to type and navigation from one project to the next.
Thank you for the gems on the side when I expand my screen. It’s a wonderful treat and all quotes I love and serve as a reminder :-)
As for some of the critiques of lacking a “business look” or items feeling too big, I think there is a solid balance of scale and the emotional qualities you wanted to explore and convey.
Congrats!

Reminds me of when clients ask for a corporate look. I understand that it means to adhere to certain brand guidelines, but it is a real pet hate of mine that business / professional / corporate seems to mean to clients “don’t do anything too creative or original as not everyone will like it”. No one remembers neutral designs or ideas. Invoke a reaction!
Good on you with the new design. While it’s not my cup of tea in terms of style, to me it screams quality, personality, creativity and great design, which - as you’ve mentioned - is your “product”.
Good work :)

I wouldn’t be so quick to assume from only CrazyEgg data that the RSS button is poorly placed—I know I mostly use the RSS detector built into Safari, Camino, or Firefox. Unless, of course, you’ve found here on your blog that many people click on the RSS feed or that Feedburner indicates few subscribers.
23
Hi Veerle, I really like your new site. I love all of the colours and the layout. And the changes that you made really work to draw your attention to the right places.
P.S.
I love all of the wallpapers too! Thanks!
24
I missed it at first time - looks promising project :)
25
Really great stuff ;). Perhaps you could a short movie about your work. That would be nice.
26
wow, superb redesign. It’s a complete rebranding, seems more personal and anyone can feel the touch of duoh design ;p
I like the way you use the power of typography all around the screen. And geez!! the new site is intended for large screen users.
Anyway, will you still maintain veerle’s blog?

Freddywang said:
Yes I will. The two sites stay separate and the Duoh! blog will only focus on how we did certain projects on regular basis so it can be a plus to subscribe to both.

Beautiful! As always, Veerle, you challenge the rest of us as you push the boundaries.
When I first saw the new site, I thought “Wow! What’s happening here?! What’s that?! Ooooohhh I love those colors!“ and so on ... :D
After these initial (primarily emotional) responses, I began to appreciate your truly breathtaking mastery of space, color, and typography.
You have produced a site blending surprise, delight, skill, & inspiration. A command performance!
And thank you for the desktops…. now the problem is which one shall I use first?
29
To all those who wish to see the whole background I found a simple solution: zoom out in your browser.

Hi fellow designers,
I stumbled upon this blog when I was searching cool Wordpress Theme’s and found out something spectacular.
I could go and type in dutch here, since we’re from the same country (Lovely belgium) and there’s only 10 km distance :-) but keeping it international is fine.
First I tought you were part of the belgian tripod over at Duolog but it seems you established a great profile yourself.
Keep up the good work, and I definatly keep this site in my favorites.
