TIGER today at 6 PM

2005 at 01.33 am posted by Veerle

I’ll bet it is a general feeling among fellow Mac users that it has been a long two weeks since TIGER got announced. Now it is only a matter of counting down the hours until the official launch at 6 PM this evening. I am going to collect my copy at IT Pro in Ghent, not my favourite choice but it is the closest one to home and they can’t mess up a box, however you never know :-p

Mac OS X Boxes history

My guess is that Dashboard will be one of the features that makes TIGER great. Somebody already threw us a carrot in what eye candy widgets should look like. It is a widget for Shaun Inman's Shortstat. Or what do you think of this Bloglines Notifier Widget 1.0.?

There is a lot more where that came from, so here a few sites to keep an eye on:

A few links to get you started! Still not sure about TIGER then here is a really in-depth review at Ars Technica about Tiger. If you work your way through that you'll be a Tiger Expert :-)

What is encouraging is that 3rd party software revisions are coming for Tiger when it hasn't even begun to ship. I remember that a few years ago software revisions didn't happen until weeks after a Mac OS launch. Today most developers are updating well ahead of the official release date. They don't hear it often probably, but this is my shout out to all developers who have already updated their software for Tiger and say "Thanks!".

So what about you? Is your patience been tested enough or are you the wait and see kind of a guy or girl? You already know my answer :-)

Update: Raven got the idea of a little blog readers get together and asked when I'll be there. So let's say at 6 PM at IT Pro Ghent.

I already have pre-ordered Tiger some time ago ;-)

Dashboard will be definitely a great (and nice-looking) feature but I think the “revolution” may come from other features: smart folders and smart mailboxes are my favorites but Spotlight seems to be cool too!

It’s a privilege to be a Mac user. Today more than ever.

It’s 10am and I just got a call about my Tiger box being delivered at home. This is NOT motivating when you still got a day’s work ahead. I feel like a kid. Can’t.... wait… must… play… with… nice and beautiful.... widgets…

@Pat, yes Spotlight will be amazing too. Looking for stuff that I don’t know where I’ve put it will come in (more then) handy, using a search term like ‘work that I did today’ and voilà, I get a list of my files that I’ve worked on today… but can’t help my soft spot for the eye-candy stuff :-)

@Frederik, well if it is any consolation, mine will be in front of my nose all the time but I won’t be able to look and play this weekend it since I got my hands full with the launch of our business website. It’ll feel like being on a diet with a huge box of chocolates sitting next to me :-D

Shouldn’t the title of the second box read “jag-wire” ? And on a similar note, the Tiger box like it’s the same box as the X-Men Movie trilogy.

When placed beside each other the Panther one looks uninspired and the Puma one the most friendly.

Of course, this comment should have been talking about how great the actual operating system is, but since I don’t own a mac…
Lemme just say that you can not imagine how much I miss Safari; Heck even my Firefox looks like a crossover between Safari and Camino!

You’re telling me they’re as bad as IT-Pro Antwerp? That’s quite an achievement.

@Peter: IT Pro Gent is definitely not a customer friendly store. Read about my experiences with them: http://www.scene24.net/index.php?itemid=752

Yes, I am quite angry with them!

I personally find the X in Tiger’s packaging really unappealing. Don’t know why that is. Too bulky and plain, perhaps. They could’ve done more with a colour theme such as that. The Panther version is by far better. :)

I can only dream of having such a level of usability and fancyness in Windows several years from now as Tiger has at the moment. Outstanding job, I’d say.

@Veerle: not only you can search your files like this but you can also save that search as a smart folder. That way, in your folder, you will always have the files you worked on during the last week… same thing for smart mailboxes! Actually, it follows the same philosophy as smart playlists and smart albums we already know. Pretty cool!!

Looks like IT-Pro will be somewhat crowded tonite. Veerle, at what time will you be there? Could this be a small get-together of your Belgian blog readers ?

@Ezku, I like the path the follow in their designs. They follow closely the current design trends. And it’s reflected in everything, from the material they use till the design of the hardware, the packaging boxes, the UI of the system, the Apple icon, the X logo etc. This X is very trendy. I find it a perfect design for now. The Jaguar (or Jag-wire if you want :-D) was perfect for that period, Puma was aqua all over and ‘hot’ back then, now it is pure minimalism, ‘less is more’ so they dropped the serif… really prefect, couldn’t do it better ... another BRAVO for the design team :-)

@Pat, sounds like I’ll be speechless of its endless power :-)

@Raven, I’ll try to be there like a real Macfan when doors open, at 6 p.m. And of course I’m happy to meet you and others (see my update in the article). Could be fun!

I got mine last night, Dash board is cool but safari RSS is even cooler. The only bad this is that it does not come with iphoto.

One good thing is IE is no longer packaged with the mac.

@Frederik, I’ve read your story ... geeeez! Well, couldn’t have said it any better ;-) We are a satisfied Macline (Brussels) customer since 1996 (if I’m not mistaken) and we had DOA 2 times and they exchanged without any hassle what so ever. They give professional advice and won’t push you into buying something you won’t need.

Speaking of ITpro, i’ve bought a Cinema Display there a few days ago, and yesterday prices drop 20%!

Wish they’d warned me about that, or do something about the price difference :/ Don’t they know these things some time beforehand?

Feels like i got stabbed in the back.

Veerle; would love to meet you and your blogger friends at 6pm, but it’s a bit of a trek from Devon in the UK, so I might be a bit late ...

Veerle, a small typo: “I’ll bed” --->"I’ll bet”.
Strange that everyone’s ragging on IT Pro. I never have had bad experiences with them here in Antwerp. What’s a good Mac store in Flanders then?

@wza you know, someone mentioned a nice one : they may as well sue Tiger Woods :-D

@Markus enjoy exploring!

@lazypouse LOL! ;-) Well I’ll be in London on @Media (June 9th and 10th) so who knows.

@e-man, thx I’m really blind sometimes for this kind of typos :-) About good Mac stores in Flanders I wouldn’t really know honestly, Macline is located in Brussels and they are my favorite.

@Raven, it was very nice meeting you. It was an enjoyable evening. More about this tomorrow :-)

Veerle, it was nice to meet you again. It’s starting to be a tradition that we see each other with the release of a major OSX update :-)

This afternoon I’ll will unpack my new ibook, Tiger, iLife, and iWork. That will be very fun to do :-)

See you next year when we all will buy 10.5!! :-D

Yep, i just couldn’t resist the temptation, i had to order it. Only trouble now is i’ll have to book the day off work so i’m in to collect it. Unless they just post it through the letter box?

What i find pretty amazing about Tiger’s release is that it’s already got loads of third party plug-ins and add-ons.

@kaato (Wish they’d warned me about that, or do something about the price difference :/ Don’t they know these things some time beforehand? )

No, as a matter of fact, they do not know. You can blame IT Pro for like almost everything, but Apple never shares any information like that. If you bought it at The Apple Store, the result would have been the same.

Merde Veerle, can’t you lower that 650 seconds just a little bit? :-/ (and not to 649 seconds :-p)
