The bathtub becomes furniture

2007 at 06.48 pm posted by Veerle Pieters

I don’t know if you have noticed it also, but the last few years the bathroom is becoming more and more a place to go to relax and unwind. That privilege is no longer just for spa’s or 5 stars hotels. Today we will highlight one item you’ll find in there, the bathtub.

History

The first person sized bathtub was found on the isle of Crete. It was a 5 foot long pedestal tub built from hardened pottery. But it is the Roman Empire that is most widely known for their bathing culture. Around 500 BC every Roman citizen was encouraged to daily use one of the many public baths. The tubs were made of marble, and the pipes of lead and bronze were connected to a complex sewage system for sanitation purposes. The Roman empire sets the early bar for personal hygiene as we know it today.

The bathtub as of today

Oval, round or six cornered, bathtubs take all forms and dimensions and prices. It can go from 200 all the way up to above 6000 VAT not included, and no I am not talking about the wellness things, just a tub. Let's dive in :)

Duravit

Duravit has bathtubs from designers like Philippe Starck, Sieger Design and Eoos.

Starck bathtubs and Starck X

The Starck X with stones will set you back a 6170 Euro without VAT!

Sieger Design - Happy D

All items in the range bring to mind the distinctive shape of the letter D.

Eoos - Sundeck
According to Duravit you can use this tub everywhere, well, anywhere where you've got running water. When folded, the cover serves as a comfortable headrest. Opened out, it's a relaxing lounger - a veritable sundeck for well being worshippers. Not sure how that works to be honest. It makes me wonder how you get the thing inside again, or do you leave it outside? :-/

Hoesch

Hoesch, a German based manufacture, has still much to learn of why people use the internet. It's

because we search for information and we want it as fast as possible. Making most of your PDF's password protected before you can download is a good idea to frustrate your potential customer. Extra effort like first having to e-mail to get access and wait. Good call! They do have nicely design bathtubs. So it's kind of a shame.

Modula

This one is priced at 2007 Euro VAT not included. In Belgium the VAT is 21% for a new house and 6% if your house is older then 5 years and your are re-modeling it.

Hoesch - Modula

Foster

Design by Norman Foster. Over the past 30 years, he has carried out projects all over the world. They include the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank, the terminal at Stansted Airport near London, and the renovation of the German Reichstag. The 175x75cm one below costs 522,60 Euro VAT not included.

They aren’t in there because this is about bathtubs and Detremmerie only does bathroom furniture and washbasins so no tubs :)

No on the contrary but that’s something for another post ;)

Hmm, I think you’re a bit mixed up. Rome wasn’t founded until 753 BC; maybe you mean 550 BC?

Excellent, off to bookmarks!

Since we’re in a process of buying a new family house, plus web.burza is moving to another location, this category is very much appreciated. Keep on going, pretty please!

Baths are so important, especially now with all the environmental concerns, they have become a treat when you have one. I also like the Japanese inspired wooden tubs.

Q. Who will be cleaning that tub after every bath?

Veerle, what bath did you pick for your new bathroom?

I really wish that I had seen this before I had redone my bathroom 4 months ago. Although, none of these would really fit in my bathroom. I will plan to put on in my next house though. I have bookmarked this page in my “New Home Dreamz” section.

These bathtubs do look really, really comfortable, indeed. I want one of those. Too bad that I don’t have a tub in my current home.

What makes me wonder is the fact that you blog about bathtubs, though. Are you currently redesigning your home?

Nice article and some very beautiful bathrooms.

We built our house almost three years ago and the kitchen and bathrooms were our first priority. We’re very happy with the result - a modern, white corner bathtub for two in a spacious bathroom. I love it . . .

Love these designs.  The second and third tubs remind of a square sake cup at your local sushiya…

One thing to note, I think, is that part of what makes these look so appealing are the incredibly SPACIOUS bathrooms in which they are situated (note that in some cases the tubs aren’t even shot in a room, but rather in front of an expansive landscape).  Just a thought on framing…

We have a bathtub from Allibert called Jacana

I’m writing about it because we bought a house last year and are now decorating things slowly. All the research that we did sparked my interest to create a section on my blog about ‘modern home design’. :)

Like I told Sven above it’s mainly because of research for our home. The things I use come from many sources such as programs on TV, books, the web, friends that designed their home and product folders…

While I was looking on the bathtubs and their costs I suddenly realized that for the cost of one of such buth one can, say, study in China for a year.
Isn’t it an amusing difference?

In 1986 CBS News did a five part series on what the year 2000 would be like.  One thing they predicted:

“So what we now call the bathroom will take on a whole new meaning. with whirlpools, saunas and exercise equipment it becomes an entertainment center,” another predicted.

Looks like they were off by seven years, but they were definitely right.

I really like the minimalist ones - especially the Starck X with the oceanfront views - would make you feel like you were on perpetual vacation!

The blue bath inspired by Miles van de Rohe’s chair is also aesthetically pleasing from a design standpoint, and the comment about the CBS news special was interesting to read as well.

I’m noticing a trend away from the standard tile used in bathrooms.  Wood floors are replacing tiled floors and wood baseboards for the walls.

The wood floors go great with the white tubs and work well with wood cabinetry.  I’m not sure though that wood floors can really stand up to the water around a bathroom.
