Server move this weekend
2007 at 01.32 pm posted by Veerle
This weekend will mark another milestone in my little blogs history as my site will migrate to new servers. It’s like when you are grown up and you are ready to leave the parents to explore the big world. Luckily I am in the capable hands of the good folks of EngineHosting to make this as smooth as possible.
New IP address + some geek talk
My site will get a new IP address but the impact should be minimal since the current servers and the new servers will both pull data from the same database server. The only downtime will appear when my database is moved to a MySQL 5 server.
For those interested my site will move to all new dual processor/quad core Xeon web server based load-balanced clusters, as well as new dual processor/quad core MySQL servers all based on Redhat Enterprise v5. This should improve the overall experience. See you on the other side and over to you Nevin :)

Is there a reason why you’re moving? I’ve always found your site quick to load.
2
Done! That’s a quick move.

The reason why is that my site now runs on new hardware together with an update to PHP 5 and MySQL 5.

I wish you the best of luck with your new server.

Yummy :) But Have your current server experience some slowdowns? or is it just precautionary.
6
Ooooh. Your new server sounds good!

Veerle agreed to assist us in a final test phase before we announce the general availability to the rest of our shared/shared pro clients of our completely new server clusters, based on Redhat Enterprise v5. While this gives clients access to php 5 and MySQL 5 now, we also are taking the opportunity to upgrade our clients to more powerful and greener (lower power consumption and heat generating) servers at the same time.
So there were a number of great reasons for the move :)
Thank you again, Veerle!

Hi,
Am looking through your tutorials and found some broken links, example the 2 links in the tutorial on blend option (in 2005). Not sure if it’s due to the server move; love your tutorials so I sure hope the links all work fine for the many of us who are learning great stuff from your blog.

No thank you for making this so painless and smooth!

Yes that was because of the move and me forgetting to upload those files to the new server. It’s all fixed now and thank you for mentioning this.

What is your provider ?

It´s really great - your journal is a lot faster for me now.
13
A really good idea. Its a lot faster and better in function

Yeah, sometimes the site was realy to slow at some points. Good thing, that move :)

I’ve been thinking of doing the same (to upgrade to a Ruby on Rails friendly server) and I have a question for you. Does a change in IP address mess up ones Google rankings or does Google map to the URL versus your IP address having no effect in your rankings? Thanks.

The new server is much faster than the old one. Fine! By the way I love your blog. Wonderful design, good articles and very useful tutorials. Thanks for all!

Hey! Exactly what hosting plan are you using with Engine Hosting? Shared, Shared Pro, Dedicated?
I’m interested because I’d like to give them a shot.

I’m using shared hosting plan S-3 for now. It’s a great service you get and I can really recommend it. You can mention my name :)

Done!
Right now I’m using mosso.com for hosting, and even though there’s bucket loads of bandwidth and disk space, the system is quite unstable. My site’s activation emails are only sent about half of the time.
I’ve been jacked around a lot when it comes to hosting, so hopefully these guys mean business.
By the way, your site is gorgeous!
