Recab from a live coverage at Apple Expo Paris
2004 at 01.51 am posted by Veerle Pieters
The keynote was attended by more then 7000 people. When Phill Shiller came on stage he said “Apple Expo is going to be amazing”. He also talked about Steve that he is recovering very well and that he will be back at Cupertino in September. Apparently many Apple folks are thinking along the lines of September can’t come soon enough.
Music
Phill started talking about music by saying that the iPod has 58% market share in the US. He also showed the new Apple iPod commercial “Sterio Rock” on screen. Apple has sold some 5 million songs in Europe in the first eight weeks, they also claim to have sold more then 4 million of iPods worldwide. It still looks like the iTunes Music store will be available in all other countries throughout Europe in October. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
Mac OS X
Mr. Schiller announced that there were more than 12,000 native Mac OS X apps on the market and invited several software companies on stage to do some demos. One of those new apps is BBEdit 8. It has a completely new tab and windowing management, both are welcome because BBEdit was overloaded in my opinion.
Phill also showed a demo of Motion, Motion lets you explore new creative territory using self-propelled behavior animation, character-by-character title animation and a powerful new interface and it integrates seamlessly with Final Cut Pro HD and DVD Studio Pro 3. I’ve already ordered this software, it’s pretty amazing what you can accomplish with it as you can see in this demo from the NAB.
Tiger aka 10.4
As was to be expected Phill also talked about Tiger. More precisely about Spotlight, Apple’s search technology built into Tiger, it is “years ahead of Longhorn” he said. As you know Microsoft announced last Friday that it was scrapping its spiffy new WinFS file system for Longhorn, a file system that would have made Longhorn’s searching capabilities quite powerful. During the Spotlight demonstration, he “found” a document called “New Products Demo.” No doubt this referred to the new iMac where everybody was waiting for. iChat was also on the “to do” list and he showed a demo of the new iChat AV that will ship with Tiger and that uses the new H.264 video codec. Quality of the video chat was amazing. Somebody in the audience said ” We want Steve” and I also thought that Steve would show up in that iChat but he didn’t. The iChat demo ended with Bertrand Serlet video conferencing in. The crowd loved his brief conversation in French btw.
Hardware
First some figures, Apple has sold 7.5 million iMacs, which works out to 2.38 per minute over six years. That was the start of the iMac G5 presentation where everybody has been waiting for. All in one elegance, extreme simplicity and the perfect machine for the iLife suite. Everyone is going to be asking “where does the computer go?
You can unscrew three screws, and the entire back comes off. The crowd loved it! The G5 module, when looking at the back, is on the right side. There are three fans in the unit, and it is “quiet as a whisper.” The iMac G5 tucks away all the modern amenities in its two-inch thin body, such as a slot-loading SuperDrive or Combo drive. The keyboard will slide underneath the display when you are not using it. The iMac is available in 17- and 20-inch widescreen models. You can choose a 1.6 or 1.8GHz G5 processor that’s ready to run modern 64-bit applications under the secure and stable Mac OS X operating system. For more information and specs you can visit the Apple iMac website. The only downside to this iMac is the fact that Apple only puts 256MB Ram in it. I personally believe such a move should be a thing of the past. The minimum should at least be 512MB.

It’s georgious!! But Veerle, just a few minutes ago, there was a completely different picture on your site? I’m relieved that was not the real new iMac! ;) Apple.com has updated its homepage now too…

@Roel: Yes, that was the deisgn that somebody came up with and as it looks now he was very close. I wanted to show an example before the real pictures were online. Normally I should also have some picts from the showfloor.

It’s sooo cute. I can imagine a few people might think it’s a bit Vaio-like, though…

Apple rocks! They do!

Hi Veerle,
So were you actually at the conference then, and if so, did you get to see the new iMac in person? I have to admit that, while the specs look amazing, I’m less than convinced by the design.
I guess it’s just that I think the v2 iMac design is a classic. I love the fact that you can adjust the height and direction, as well as the angle. I’ve been holding out for the new iMac but now i’m not sure. I’ll probably reserve judgement till I see one in person, but I’m tempted to go out and buy a refurbished top of the range v2 iMac before they all disappear.

@ Andy: I personally wasn’t in Paris but our PHP programmer Kenneth was. Kenneth said to me on the phone that it looks like a screen from a distance and that it was a pretty amazing job that they actually fitted a computer in there. He also said that it wasn’t a revolution like the sun flower model and I have to agree with him on that, it needs some getting use to.
It all depends a bit on what you want do with it I guess. For professional design work you would be better with a PowerMac G5 because of its flexibility and power. For a machine to use at home you would get a pretty powerful Mac that would satisfy you for years to come. Design wise the sun flower model looks nicer but that’s probably also because the change is so drastic.
My first impression on the G5 was a bit the same but now that I have seen it in real life all doubts are gone and I like it very much. I would go for the G5 iMac, it is still a nice piece of work and the price is also not that bad. Only the 256MB Ram is a bit of a shame. Kenneth said he had some pictures from the show floor and that he will back tonight arround 7PM and I will post them as soon as possible.

If they can fit a G5 in a small and crowded box like the new iMac, i recon it shouldn’t take long before they can fit one in a Powerbook.

@Lars: It’s cerntainly a step in the right direction. It’s amazing that Apple has fit a whole computer in there but when I look at how small my PowerBook 17 inch is they still have to loose a huge amount of thickness. So don’t get your hopes too soon. My guess is it will be a least another 9 months.
It seems that my guess isn’t that bad at all and maybe even to optimistic because in Paris one the Apple execs (Tom Boger) told The Mac Observer “No G5 Laptop Anytime Soon”

You were at the expo too huh :)
My opinion: the keynote talk was a rerun of the WDC talk, (which i already saw online) so not really that interesting. But witnessing the complete crowd go wild on the iMac announcement was worth all the waiting :)
The expo itself wasn’t really that interesting, so we didn’t stay as long as we planned. Luckily, it was in Paris, so enough sightseeing to do ;)
