Real world test of H.264 vs Sorenson 3
2005 at 06.22 am posted by Veerle
Here at Duoh! we have been using the Sorenson Video 3 Pro Codec for a long time. We had great results with it and it’s probably one of the best codecs on Mac. That was until H.264 came on to the scene. We haven’t got time to play around with it. Fortunately for us, Jeff Harrell did.
The end score is same file size but dramatically different results. If you’re into video this a good read and leaves us with a pleasant feeling that great things will be possible thanks to this new H.264 codec. Eagerly waiting for Apple to ship the new Final Cut Studio ;-)

I have previously heard some very discouraging words about the new codec so I’m really glad to have found another point of view. Video on the web still has long way to go, but it looks as though things are looking up.

What discouraging words were those exactly, PJ? I ask because I’m the author of the linked article (with new material added just a few minutes ago; check it out), and I’ve had nothing but spectacular experiences with H.264 so far.

Just checked out the clips on the mentioned link and it really looks amazing. Apple again on the forefront of new technology !

Wait until you see the clips from “The West Wing” that I’m about to post. Even after working closely with H.264 for a while, I was absolutely blown away by the results I got from encoding a clip from that show. You just won’t believe it.

@jeff: Well, I’m impressed. Thanks for taking the time to set up all those tests and explaining in detail what you did.
