PowerBook G5 still a year away so…

2004 at 06.33 am posted by Veerle Pieters

New toys at the office today! Not so long ago I wrote about Apple’s latest PowerBooks and that I will skip this update and hold out for a PowerBook G5. Well now I changed my mind and bought a new 17” PowerBook G4. The G5 is still probably a year away. We got a very good price from our Apple dealer and 14 days ago it was ordered.

It was a build to order machine since I requested a faster HD and an extra 512MB Ram. So to keep it short and sweet today all the toys arrived at the office. So now we’re also equipped to do some video conferencing :-)

So the only thing still not arrived is our Xserve G5. Apparently Apple has some delivery problems with the optional Xraid card. We need such a card for Raid 5. Xserve even duals are already arriving in quantities according to Macline.

It’s always a joy to unwrap and look at the attention to detail with new Apple products. Boy would I love to design the packaging for these products, not only would I know what’s coming but also make money ;-)

You can see a short unwrapping story of the 17” PowerBook here.

You are one lucky PowerBook owner. I really want one as well, but buying it wouldn’t justify what I do, which is mostly developing in .NET :(

Jezter, thanks!

Andy, yes I feel very lucky. Still, I didn’t have much time so far to play with my toys, except for the iSight, I had a cool video chat with our PHP programmer, it is awesome! I’ll use that a lot I’m sure. BTW, did you buy a new cellphone already? I’m asking because I’m also looking for a phone that has GPRS, bluetooth etc.... since Apple is stubborn on releasing a cool phone-handheld-thing :-D

Roger, it’s never too big! But thanks for being such a gentleman ;-)

You should tell us a little about the size vs portability issue with the 17” Powerbook. I have a current model 12” Powerbook but I find myself needing a little more screen estate. The 17” doesn’t seem viable because it’s feels too big. I think 15” is just right.

Allen, I chose a 17” instead of a 15” because size doesn’t bother me to carry it. I’ll use this PowerBook for meetings with my clients to show projects, view demos etc. Most of the time I’ll use it at the office as a production machine. That’s why I chose top of the line.

If I would have to carry a PowerBook day in day out, then I might have chosen for the 15” instead. I think only the size is a factor compared to a 15”. I did have to buy another bag ;-) The weight is very doable, I’m not sure if there SO much difference with a 15”. The 17” doesn’t feel like a heavy portable at all.

The price was also a factor. I found the difference between 15” and 17” very doable. In my case a 17” is a good choice I think. It seems for you that a 15” would be better indeed. A 15” gives you already the idea of a rather wide screen I think.

I am typing this message from my new Powerbook 17”.  This machine is 2 days old now and I can only say one thing : it’s awesome.  I used to work on an iBook for 3 years and I am alrady used to the screen size!  It’s immense.  I really like it a lot!  For the price : it dropped with 605 Euros!  I was planning to get a PB 15”, but after adding extra ram and a bigger HDD, the price difference between a 15” and 17” became so small that getting the 17” was justified.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a lot of money!  Because I ain’t no pro user this meant saving money for a year and to be honest it was a little above my budget.  But now, using it, I can only say this : it was really worth it!  I suggest those who doubt should consider paying a little more for getting the maximum screen size.  I can promise you, you won’t regret!
