Peter Norton is no longer Doctor Mac!

2004 at 05.57 am posted by Veerle Pieters

First it was rumor but now it’s official Symantec has stopped development of Norton Utilities for Macintosh and Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh. Symantec will concentrate its efforts solely on Internet security products for the Mac. Norton Utilities and SystemWorks on PC are not affected by this decision.

Since Norton Utilities came to the Mac in 1988 Doctor Norton has always had a place on my HD and even helped me out a couple of times. So I guess you can safely say that one of older icons has left the building. The end of an era.

Norton Utilities has lost most of it’s glory in the transition to Mac OS X. Several problems have cost Norton it’s reputation and strong competitors have gained a lot of market share. One of them is DiskWarrior a program that also earned its permanent place on my HD. Recently DisWarrior has even invented an intelligent way to update the startup cd that came with the program.
DiskWarrior Update Tool
The other one is Techtool Pro who also had its problems in the past. It took them much longer then anticipated to bring the suite over to Mac OS X. Ok there was Drive 10 but that was never a serious candidate.

DiskWarrior is the only essential tool needed on Mac OS X an I use it mainly to keep my HD in shape. I’ve been using it for years and in all that time I never lost any file or HD. So a must have!

Norton SystemWorks for Mac caused more problems then it solved.

What would you recommend: DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro?

@Alex: I would recommend DiskWarrior, but it depends on what your needs are. If you just want to use it to fix your HD, then DiskWarrior is your tool. TechTool Pro is much more then just HD fixing, it’s also optimizing, network checking, testing, un-erasing trashed items etc.

I am more concerned with loosing the data on my HD ... if I loose my photo archive I will go bezerk (so I back up on several DVDs and to an external FW every time I change anything). DW seems to be the tool for me, mosly keeping my HD healthy and data intact.

@Alex: You will not regret using this program. A good rule of thumb is maintaining a repeating maintenance schedule. What I personally do is run DsikWarrior every month from a external FireWire HD or the DiskWarrior CD to check the disk and fix things if needed.

Another good tip is always run disk permissions when installing software or system updates, security updates etc. You can do this before installing and after. Of course a back-up strategy doesn’t hurt either.

DiskWarrior is indeed excellent. I highly recommend it.

For the PC, I tried many tools and utilities, but I stuck with Ad-Aware and Advanced Uninstaller.
