Our stroll in Paris

2005 at 11.59 pm posted by Veerle Pieters

On Wednesday we had a few hours left to stroll around Paris a bit. Paris is such a beautiful city. It is a busy city with wide lanes and a lot of cars but the way everything is arranged you still don’t get disturbed by it. Sorry for my UK buddies but I personally find it much nicer then London, hard to explain but it has a sort of a romantic sense to it and we only scratched the surface. In London you get the feeling that traffic gets priority over the pedestrian. It gave me the feeling of being sucked in a hectic pool sometimes. In Paris they spend more thought in making it as comfortable as possible for the pedestrian, like wide sidewalks with trees etc.

So have a look yourself on my Flickr page. Hope they can make you daydream a bit ;-)

Yes, Paris is really a nice city. It’s true, that it is very comfortable for the pedestrian, I’ve just spent a few days there…

Compared with London it’s really more romantic… but London can also be very romantic but not the whole city ;-) as you I say sorry too.. but every city has it’s own attraction… so you hardly can compare ...

I really like Paris, we went there last summer and thought it was great, lots to see, easy to get around.

It was nice to explre the city and have a rest every now and again in the parks.

Must go back soon!

I live in Paris for 6 years now. Indeed it is quite a nice city ;) but there are also places were you wouldn’t even walk through! After having seen your photoset, I’d advise you, if I may, to hang around the borrough of “Le Marais”. It’s full of tiny street, lots of people, shops, colorful and graphically exciting! Have fun during your stay.

What is stawl?  I couldn’t find it in dictionary.com.

Did you mean stowl or stroll?

Yeah Paris is quite nice, was there earlier this year with my girlfriend.

The traffic doesn’t feel so good when you’re driving in it.

@Markus, I’m talking about the overall feeling of the city when you explore on foot. In London cars rule, big difference. I tend to base my opnion on the whole picture and not on a few nice places. When you move from point A to point B Paris is more attractive I think.  I know of course that London has nice places too like each city has, I love the parks for instance. The Queen Mary’s garden in Regent Park is gorgeous! :-)

@Jean-Baptiste, I’m back already. It was too short to see it all, but I’m sure I’ll go back soon. Thanks for the tips ;-)

@Damien, guess ‘strawl’ is the same as ‘stroll’, walking around, hanging around. Maybe it’s a US - UK thingy?

From when I went Paris, I noticed the sidewalks were wide and the area around was really nice. However, the traffic is incredibly busy.

Veerle, unless you know more than the Oxford English Dictionary, “strawl” is not a word in the Eglish language. US, UK or otherwise.

If you meant “to walk or ramble in a careless, haphazard, or leisurely fashion as inclination directs; often simply to take a walk” then you probably meant “stroll” :)

There’s a citation for the word spelled as “strowl”, but that was in 1680 :)

Like the pictures, too!

My favorites:
1) the shot of the sunlight coming through the glass behind the pyramid entrance to the Louvre;
2) the time exposure view of the lights with the Arc d’Triomphe in the background, and
3) the one from the Pont Alexndre III - the statue of the baby neptune or whatever it is - the composition and lighting are very nice with the brdige and sunset in background.

@Michel: hmm, strange! Do a search an Google for strawl around and you’ll find tons of mentions. What’s up with that if it isn’t a word that exsist? We have a mystery here ;-)

Nope, no real mystery, just an honest mistake.

Seeing as there are about 351000 results for “collge” and 25000 for “blgium”, nearly 5000 for “beelgium”, that most of the “strawl” out there seem to refer to musicians or other proper names, and that there are 848000 results for “take a stroll” but only 41 for “take a strawl”...

I’d draw my conclusions :)

Here are the correct spellings for “stroll” -

both “strowl” and “stroll” are correct, but NOT “strawl.”
Check out Websters online Dictionary -

www.websters.com

  or:

  http://dictionary.reference.com/

Whenever you have a spelling question, just go to this site, and type in your spelling, and it will tell you whether or not it is, or it isn’t a word, and then make a suggestion as to what the correct spelling is, complete with a definition.

  mystery solved!

Good thing the footpaths are so wide - they need to be so you can safely dodge all the dog shit!

Personally, I liked strawl and might have to use it myself on occasion.
I’m pleased that you liked Paris, I hated the place myself but at that time (early 80s) I had orange and green hair so Paris didn’t like me either!

I went to Paris last week and looking at your pictures, we almost crossed path, I was on Champs Elysée and later by the Louvre at the end of the day, I did go at the AppleExpo on Tuesday ;-).

Really nice pictures, it did make me dream. It’s nice to see the same place I just went last week.

If you like Paris, which is indeed wonderfuul, then you should consider a trip down to Buenos Aires. It’s very similar to Paris but much cheaper…about 1/4 the price and you get to rack up a lot of frequent flier miles for the long flight. A lot of beautiful architecture in the Parisian style. Overall, the city is more European than Latin American. Essentially, a low-cost version of Paris.
