On air now: chilled songs from Eivissa

2005 at 05.05 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Last year I was looking forward to 2005 because I’ve learned that January would bring another edition of the marvelous chillhouse mix compilations by Café del Mar. Café del Mar is the world’s first sunset bar and DJ Bruno has an undisputable taste for the coolest Balearic tunes. He is personally responsible for most of the huge Café del Mar CD collection.

Café del Mar ChillHouseMixCafé del Mar has a mixed ChillHouse collection of 3 double CD’s that really are the smoothest chilled vibes out there. You can buy these CD’s online at Café del Mar Music. If you do you’ll also safe a bit of money because most music shops here are taking a huge margin. Now I am a bit disappointed since Bruno told me that Café del Mar decided that they would postpone the release of the new series until 2006! Too bad because there isn’t anything else out there that has that kind of quality. But the good news is that Bruno is working on another chillhouse album for another label. More on that later.

Go ahead and music icon listen to this (MP3 Mix) and let me know what you think.

A bit of background info: Café del Mar is located in San Antonio and the sunset strip is what made this the most famous place in Ibiza. According to Ibiza spotlight it is so popular that the council are thinking of changing the plans for a new sports harbor in the area which would spoil the view, and moving it round the corner, next to the existing pleasure cruiser berths. They even made a DVD of the sunset that they used for the important FITUR travel trade fair in Madrid.

By being there I can only confirm that it is a truly magical place. It feels great to sit there and enjoy the evening sun on your skin while sipping from a drink. Must stop dreaming now…

And for the music lovers of the 80’s a good challenge is guessing the sample used in the last track on the mix. Come on suprise me with your knowledge ;-)

I’m also a big fan of the CDM cd’s and have almost all of them - although the price in Belgium is sometimes ludacrous.
These cd’s were added recently to my collection. But I cannot answer the question as to what sample was used…. Anybody else ?? A hint, maybe ?

I think you really need to be watching a sunset for this music. For me right now, the vocals are all a little off, I bet they sound different at sunrise/senset though!

I do like the last track though, and I know the sample, well a sample, might be more than 1 ;)

Glad to Know you - Chris Jankel

Of course it’s “Glad to know you” !!! And to think it’s one of my old time favorites ... How stupid of me to focus on the trumpet :-(

You probably already know them but if you don’t, you should check the “Hotel Costes” series by Stephane Pompougnac. It’s just great!

Hi, this is my first post to a blog.. EVER.. and I love you site and ideas.  I just wanted to let you know you might like a band/guy named “styrofoam”  his latest cd is pretty cool.  He mixed the tracks with the artists in mind and then submitted it to them and they agreed to make vocals for the songs.  It’s a very good and powerful CD.  I’m pretty sure it’s available on iTunes as well.  Keep the great posts coming!

Wow I am impressed ;-) Steven is very close since it is:

Chaz Jankel - Glad To Know You

Chaz Jankel was the musical genius behind the Ian Dury & The Blockheads, and is also known for co-writing ‘Ai No Corrida’ which was covered by Quincy Jones. Glad you all liked the little preview.

@Colin: Yes ITMS has a selection of tracks of styrofoam but I am not sure if the cd you are refering to is in there because I only found numbers performed by him. Maybe a link would help?

@Colin: It is not bad but not 100% my thing.  Not exactly the same but a band that I very much like is Bent. Not in ITMS yet but you can check out some of their work here .

I’ve got some Café del mar CD’s and I just love them. The “Café del Mar 25th anniversary” is what I like to call superb. Gelka - Hidding place is my favorite track on the record. If I ever have the chance to go there I’ll certainly visit it!

Hi!

Since I realize you enjoy electronic music I would like to recommend you the following song:

Ridgewalkers - El Find (Andy Moor remix)

This is a really awesome tune!!

Veerle, thanks for all wonderfull photos. The down side of them, is that I started missing europe while I was flipping through. Its getting really boring here in the US. Probably because of the repetative culture. Its a mix of everything, that I would not necessarily call unique, but rather different. In comparison, countries in europe, most things are there just because the it is the way it is and that is what makes up culture. I am originaly from Lithuania, and going for a visit coming fall for the first time in 9 years. Perhaps it could be one of the topics in your blog - the Cultural differences.

I downloaded that ChillhouseMix above. It’s fantastic. Love it. Now i know what true house music is. If you put the volume high enough, your heart start dancing to the beat, and in rhythm if you have rhythm yourself.
