New G5 is out!

2004 at 07.20 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Today Apple released an update to it’s PowerMac line. You can now choose between a dual 1.8 Ghz and a dual 2.0 Ghz. The top-of-the-line is a dual 2.5 Ghz.  So what’s amazing about this? To cool, Apple designed a sophisticated liquid cooling system that takes off the heat without bumping up the noise. Mac OS X dynamically adjusts the flow of the fluid and the speed of the fans based on temperature. So it’s safe to assume that this machine will be quiet.

There has always been talks about liquid cooling and this is the first time that those rumors came true. Most of those rumors where about the PowerBook G5. Since there is no room in a small PowerBook for a large heat sink people assumed that the future would be liquid cooling. Does this mean that the PowerBook is nearby? Personally I don’t think so, I would be amazed if the PowerBook would be out in 2004. January 2005 at the earliest.

What’s still missing are those new Cinema Displays. According to Think Secret those new displays will be in 20-inch, 23-inch and 30-inch sizes. The 20-inch model will have a maximum resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels with a viewable area of 20.1 inches. The 23-inch, HD-ready model will have a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels with a viewable area of 23.0 inches. The 30-inch, HD-ready model will have a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels with a viewable area of 29.7 inches.

If you read this report you’ll notice that Apple is about to change its ADC connectors again to DVI. Of course this is good news for all you PC users out there since this means that those Cinema Displays will also be usable on PC. The bad news, more cables and a power adapter. The 30” Cinema Display will use too much power and that’s probably the reason why. Still a bit annoying all those changes since it’s not the first time.

I don’t see your point in more cables . My Formac 1900 is DVI too, but has only one (fat) DVI cable ( they add power and usb very close to the connection at my G4, which is a perfect solution, as beautiful as ADC ;-) )

I’m just waiting for those wireless Apple pro speakers to arrive, so I can finally fix the ( surround) sound ;-) Wouldn’t that be cool ?
btw did your G5 arrive yet ? or was your order suspended too and do you get a Dual now ?

@Roger: Well my point is exactly what you’re saying about the Formac 1900. You have a all in one cable for USB and Power and DVI.

According to the report from Think Secret these new screens will have a HUGE power adapter, a DVI cable and a USB cable and 2 FireWire slots (more cable clutter if you use a FireWire disk). So more cables then I use now. Ok these are still rumors but if true I find them a step back.

No our Xserve G5 is still not arrived! It’s is the Optional Raid card that is the culprit. It seems nobody knows when these will be available. The problem is if you need such a card it can only be done when you order the Xserve (They connect the card in the factory).

I would love wireless Apple Pro speakers ;-)
