My patience is no longer being tested!

In the past I’ve written some articles to show my disappointment in the fact that the iTunes Music store wasn’t available in Belgium. It took way too long so I waited impatiently to enjoy the simplicity of buying.
With a big smile on my face I can say that all that has changed since yesterday evening 6PM. Yesterday Apple launched the Music Store not only in Belgium but also in Austria, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. Next on the list is Canada in November.
First I downloaded the new 4.7 version and then I was off to browse around in the store in search of some nice tunes. Too bad for the limited time that I had since my workload is rather heavy these days. In about 15 min and thanks to a banner in the dance section (never thought I would say this… The first helpful banner!) I was able to find a great album with some delicious chilled tunes on it.
Before you’re able to buy you need to setup an account. Apple did a smart move by linking this to your .Mac account so in a matter of a few clicks I was up an running and ready to buy. But even if you don’t have a .Mac creating one is a piece of cake, only filling in a user name and adding one of the major credit cards. Thanks to a deal with Amazon’s one click buying a song is just a matter of a click, hands down the most easy way of shopping. Some shops over here work with credits and I really don’t like that and it isn’t easy to understand because you need more credits to burn then listen etc. In iTunes Music Store everything is simple, a song is 0,99 Euro and an Album is 9,99 Euro. You can listen to the music you buy on up to five Macintosh or PC computers, make unlimited playlists, burn CDs, and transfer your music to iPod.
So the first album that I bought wasn’t spanking new it was an album from the Timewriter called Jigsaw Pieces from 1998. Jean Frank Cochois aka The Timewriter released his first album in 1994 ‘The Timerewinder’. In 2004, Frank has stopped using his alias “The Timewriter” and is now producing and DJing under his (almost) real name Jean F. Cochois. He holds a monthly DJ residency at Sven Vth’s state-of-the-art Cocoon club in Frankfurt.
As can you can hear this album contains the perfect companions to listen to while working. The content of the store isn’t up to par with the US store yet but that’s just a matter of time since they are just starting. Personally I’m not that interested in local content except for artists like Sweet Coffee etc. If Apple is able to add the same quality of music as in the US store then the future looks bright.
Now on to the other special news from Apple yesterday… A brand new color screen iPod Photo. The marketing slogan for this new device is typical Apple: “Why should your ears have all the fun?”. The newest member of the iPod family, iPod Photo comes in two sizes a 40GB and 60Gb version. Both feature a razor sharp LCD display that lets you see your photos in vivid 65,536 colors, to be exact. And with its built-in backlighting, you’ll be able to admire those photos indoors or out.
What I like about this iPod Photo is that Apple not just added a color screen but also did an extra mile on creating nice features like photo syncing and support for Album art. So the new iTunes 4.7 also autosyncs Album Art. The Album Art downloaded when you purchase music from the iTunes Music Store is transferred to iPod Photo along with the music. So while iPod Photo plays your tunes, you can enjoy the Album Art on the Now Playing screen. They also improved battery life, up to 15 hours of continuous music or up to 5 hours of continuous slideshows with music. Off course all this works on Mac and PC. On Mac you can use iPhoto from the iLife suite to organize your picts and on PC it works with either Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 or Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0.
For the fans of U2 there is a special edition U2 iPod. Just like U2 this iPod stands out, it’s black with a red clickwheel. As an extra special treat, it includes an iTunes Music Store coupon you can use to get 50 US Dollar off your purchase of “The Complete U2.” As unique as the iPod itself, this digital boxed set brings together an amazing 400 U2 tracks.
My iPod Mini is still favorite but my boyfriend is now for the first time seriously considering to buy an iPod as well. So it could be that this iPod Photo will be added to the Duoh family ;-) If this happens I’ll keep you informed and write a review.

And I had to still wait… :-(
iTMS should be available in the Czech Rep. in mid of 2005.
I expected that iPod photo would be able to view pictures downloaded from a CF card (using 3rd party reader) but it’s not probably possible… in that case it would be a great gadget also for digital photographers.

I didn’t hear about the U2 ipod or the photo enhancements, now I’m excited about ipods again.

I was wondering about iTunes Music Store just few days ago, really great news!! Bye :)
4
It’s about time iTunes comes up to Canada!

Too bad you have to have a creditcard, I’m 16-year old so I don’t have one :(. I have Paypal though, but the iTMS doesn’t support it (yet). I hope it does in future.

Personally, I have mixed feelings about the new iPod. Photos.. why? “Squint your eyes and you can see the whole family!” It’s like relying on one’s digital camera LCD screen to share pictures. I’ve no doubt the images are crisper and it’s faster/easier to flip through them, but.. a radio, maybe? Better Ogg Vorbis support? Leave it up to Apple to be innovative, for sure, but practical isn’t included this time.
(However, you can buy the iPractical upgrade for $200. Heehee.. just kidding. :)
Of course, I should be grateful.. I finally got my first one last week but don’t feel at all cheated by the “SURPRISE! Color!”, whereas I’d be sorely disappointed had this happened with any of the previous releases.

Sigh .. come on Apple, where is the NZ or AU or Asia Pacific or Asian store?? Bah humbug

I agree, wheres the Australia/NZ love!

Yes Apple has still a lot of other countries to conquer… Hopefully they’re working at full speed so everyone is happy. But the job doesn’t only depends on Apple, it depends mostly on the outcome of the talks with the record labels, they’re in charge. I’m sure if it was solely up to Apple the iTMS would be worldwide already ;-)

Does anyone else find the red dial on the black iPod utterly ugly and disturbing? It looks so..unnatural.
To see a photo iPod is nice though, seems like they’re cathing up to iRiver’s H-Series a bit. (h-series link)

@ AkaXakA: That iPod is an U2 iPod that’s why those colors are there, it’s like the band it also stands out. Red is also present on Vertigo (new single) and their official site. So you could say it has a deeper meaning for the real fans out there ;-)

I want to start by saying that I really enjoy your site. I especially have enjoyed the tutorials. Anyway, I thought that if you are looking for some good chill music on iTunes MS you should check out Bonobo, Mus, and The Album Leaf. Not dance music but pretty chill and awesome to have on while working in the digital environment.

Sorry, but I am not a fan of iTunes for a couple of reasons. Well, I should say the US version of iTunes. The first reason is that the US version has the same bland selection as Napster. The selection and quality of electronic music is very, very limited. Second, iTunes will let you browse other country stores (i.e. iTunes Germany, iTune UK, etc) but not let you buy the tracks. It was really frustrating since in the european iTunes stores I found almost everything I was looking for but could not buy because I live in America.
I contacted the support center of iTunes and inquired as to why I could not buy from other stores (seems like a reasonable option to have). Needless to say they couldn’t really answer my question and were very rude! I couldn’t believe it. So that is my beef with iTunes…
But I did find the Cafe del Mar Chillhouse CDs in some tiny record store in the middle of freaking America for $4 a piece. They really didn’t know what it was...but it made my day to get them so cheap.

@Stephan, personally I would also like to be able to buy tracks in the US store but unfortunately that kind of thing is out of the hands of iTunes. The record companies are the crucial factor since they have other licensee policies in each country. So Apple has to apply to those otherwise they are in violation of the agreements. If those big shots had any clue they would make it worldwide but unfortunately they aren’t that clever. A good example of how dumb they are is those talks about raising prices now that online buying is just starting off. Those people are clueless!
Wow, that’s a super price for those cd’s. Please send me the address :-p
