Looking for a Usenet reader?

2004 at 02.33 am posted by Veerle

For those who aren’t familar with the term Usenet, Usenet is the Internet’s oldest message board where archives date back to 1981! It contains tens of thousands of groups of every imaginable topic and everybody sees what everybody else posts.

how it works
The Usenet network is unique: when a user posts a message on a Usenet server, that message is transferred from news server to news server, all around the world. Now the good folks of Panic (creators of the Transmit FTP program) have just released Unison, a MacOS X Usenet reader. Like always with Panics products the application has a very Mac like interface with cool icons etc. So why use Unison?  Lately, Usenet also hosts a large number of “binary groups”. These groups contain files of every type—movies, music, photos, etc. Unison will automatically piece these files together and make them easy to get!

Requires Mac OS X 10.2 or better. After a 15 day trial, favorites are disabled + 10 minute limit. It costs $24.95.

Hey, first time visitor. Fantastic site you’ve got here!

I’ve never been on Usenet, but Unison really makes me want to try it out. I don’t feel like shelling out $12 just to check out the binary groups (my ISP doesn’t list those) though, so I’ll probably never get on there :)

Hi thanks for the nice words. I know there are ISP’S (like mine) that list all newsgroups even the binaries. It’s all included in the monthly fee. This program is first class just like Transmit the FTP program of the Panic people. You can spend days on Usenet finding useful info ;-)
