It took them long enough….

Not so long ago I had a bit of trouble while installing Quark 6 on my new computer. For those that aren’t up to speed you can still read the horror story here. Quark only grant you a license to install it on one machine. So in my case transferring to a new machine was a serious hassle especially with a company that has a track record for lousy customer service.

Somebody at Quark must have seen the light because believe it or not those days should be over. Quark has changed their minds concerning their licensee model. The company will now allow QuarkXPress 6 owners to install and activate their software on a second computer at no extra cost. After wasting 30 min on the phone to Switzerland this announcement sounds a bit sour ;-)

Quark vice president of operations Monique Wirz-Grutter said: "Quark is completely committed to improving our customer service. This is one of the many ways that we're actively responding to customer requests and trying to help our customers be more efficient.

So YES two computers, but they have to be on the same platform which is understandable. The new policy also replaces the Quark Mobile Licensing program. Existing customers of that program can request a coupon that will apply to the purchase of Quark software or services. Activation of the second computer can be conducted online. I don't have any direct experience with this so far but it's good to know it's there. Here is me hoping that it will be a smooth ride when I have to go through all this again.

This move won't change the way I feel about InDesign CS, Adobe is still number one in providing me with a superior tool that doesn't limit my creativity and efficiency. Recently I designed a brochure and used many of the features where InDesign CS is famous for such as transparency and the ability to import Photoshop and Illustrator files directly... This was a tremendous timesaver. It was also kind of a challenge to create this brochure because of its use of UV varnish finishing (in a separate layer) to highlight details. You have to match things perfectly to get the desired result. A good practice test for an amazing program. Below are some shots of this brochure.

Hello! The truck in the fourth picture looks a bit like the Transmit one. Could that have been a source of inspiration?

Greetings, Jan.

Note: I’ve been using InDesign a couple of years now (never used Quark) and I’m more than happy with it.

@Jan: Yes the Transmit truck was my inspiration (not easy to draw out of head, I needed a simplified example of a small truck). Mine has a satellite dish on top of it. All illustrations are drawn in Illustrator btw.

@Robert: Wow this must be a big blow for Quark because I thought that area was the last strong thing they had going. Thanks for the link.

Heh, everyone I know in that’s working for large print design companies (i.e. Paul), is telling me that they are switching over to the Adobe CS, and ditching Quark in favour of InDesign.

The main mistake Quark seemed to make is that the latest version is not so backwards compatible.

When their only selling point against InDesign is the diehard printers who refuse to give up on Quark 3.x, this really put the last nail in the coffin.

Euh… Veerle. Over mijn eerste comment: ‘lager’ moet ‘larger’ zijn. Ik dacht dat je hem al gezien had, hehe ;-) En doordat ‘lager’ ook ‘bier’ betekent, vond ik het eigenlijk wel grappig.
