Introducing modern home design
2006 at 08.01 pm posted by Veerle Pieters
Things have been progressing slowly here around the home/office and it is as many people already have said before, it’s a continuous process of improving the surroundings. We bought a lot of interior magazines and did some googling to get inspiration. That is when the idea came to add a new section to the blog that I think could be worthwhile. Ideas enough for improving things around here but the execution is something else :)
New section about Modern Home Design
Like I said the idea came to me while doing research for us and I thought why not share that stuff with the readers. So as of today I will introduce a new section called "Modern Home Design". It's not my intention to give lectures about the items I show but just post some pictures about what I like and could be of interest. I know it's not like it's not been done before but I really think it could be an asset to this blog since things are about design around here anyway. The items that I post could be all kind of things like furniture, vases, lights, bathrooms etc. Pieces that make you dream and appreciate the art of industrial design.
Swissflex SF 500 - Ambiente
The first item we talk about is something that we opted for our bedroom. We have enjoyed a Swissflex SF 505 slat base for some time now, but since it is just a basic model, it's now time to addd a bed frame to it. That's when we bumped into the SF 500 Ambiente accessories. We wanted something tied but still with some personalty. The SF 500 - Ambiente is all that, since it is very versatile and because you can go from a discreet bed upgrade through sleek design feet to a luxurious complete system featuring headboard, side tables and our unique bed surround. You can choose from different materials: aluminium or various lumbers as well as leather and fabric covers in eleven different colors. It features some nice usability touched like integrated sliding profiles, that can be moved freely along the side of the bed (for when you sit up for example). There are these clever reading lights that can be turned towards where you are reading.
Consider giving your back a break
This bed is not one of the cheapest but if you consider how much time you spend in it, your back will thank you in the long run. I can vouch that it actually works because I sleep better and more solid than I did in my previous bed. The good thing about this system is that it is modular so you can go as far as your budget will take you or you can do as we did, start just with the basics for a few years and update when you can. We chose a black leader back panel and allumium legs combined with bedside tables doors in cherry wood and glass topping.

very cool but I need to get rid of more things first!
2
Wow, that picture seems great. I like minimalism in home design (less is sometimes more…)
3
the design is very nice, but for a bed I think it’s too trendy. I wouldn’t be sure that I would still like it in say 15 or 25 years.
Also, the metal frame and matrass holders make it look like a bit of a hospital bed.

Whoops! Party foul!

Nice bed. Wish they imported to the states.

Hey Veerle, congrats on the new section, I’m positive it will be an asset to your blog. This bed is a nice ‘bedroom secret’ to share, if you ask me. It mixes great style with pure functional elements. Something which apparently seems more appropriate on a hospital bed to some ;-)
Too bad however that a company like Swissflex (“Highest quality materials and careful manual workmanship are the standard feature of any SWISSFLEX product”) doesn’t go the extra mile when it comes to webdesign (“This website has been
optimised for Internet
Explorer. With some
Netscape versions

Great idea, the new section will be useful for all of us. The pictures already look outstanding… thanks!!!

Ahhh, interior design porn. I love it!

Oops - John beat me to it.

Please tell me that’s not a shag carpet!

I know you are fond of your colo(u)rful chairs, but personally, I would much rather have this, and since it’s out of my current price range, I want you to have it.

Congrats on your new bed! :-)
I recently bought a similar bed myself - the Tempur Signature 180-series.
It har similar features (adjustable in every way, the matress dynamically adjusts to your body-shape etc.), as well as a pretty modernistic design. I guess the price range is pretty similar too (about $6500).
A good bed is a good investment. :)

I’m happy a lot of readers are exciting about the new section. And you are right, like I needed a new bad frame, Swissflex could use a serious site update. I wouldn’t mind lending them a hand on the graphics and coding :)
Jon Hughes:
Thanks :) Although I’m absolutely convinced they sit perfectly and are worth buying if you spend all day behind the computer, I find this chair a bit too heavy looking. I’m also very used to sit in the position as the Stokke chair, with my knees lower. For me this is perfect. I can imagine that some people don’t like to sit like this. For most people it’s getting used to, for me it feels very natural and comfortable, especially for my back.

Nice bed :)

I just adore the Barcelona chair but it’s so expensive!
Now I have a dilemma.
A real Barcelona costs about 2.500 EUR. I already found a fake one, good quality, for 700 EUR. But when you really, really love design you should somehow feel ashamed you even thought about buying a fake Barcelona.

Just like that, my girlfriend works in health and she says the bed doesn’t need to be ajustable to 1000 ways to be comfortable. Buy a 1 foot tick mastress wich is good for your back and you’ll be set.
Has for me, I prefer more authentic designs made out of wrought iron.

That shade of blue on the walls is beautiful. I’d love to hear what you have to say about color in interior design. Looking forward to future articles :)

Hi,
just a few words to thank you for this new section.

Great new section, we all can learn from industrial design!
18
beautiful wall color.

Although I’ve been a lurker until now, I just had to start posting here now. I’m really interested in Interior Design and tend to read every article about the topic I come across. I really love the new section.
Personally I prefer those super modern flat beds
instead of beds that can be adjusted to 100 different positions. I rather adjust my sleeping position than my bed position ;)
20
I love the idea of the new section! Perhaps you could discuss wall colors soon? I’m planning on painting soon and would love some good ideas.
21
Nice new section ;-)
Also a nice bed you’ve bought. Seems to be very practical if you want to read something in bed or just relax in another position. You have also a nice coloration of your bedroom.
22
I have been a lurker until now as well! I love that bed of yours! though I’m pretty sure that it did cost a lot. I like minimalism in any interior design… you are one great designer because you even managed to make your bedroom so good-looking :)

Nice photo

Veerle,
have you yet slept in that bed? Id’ be interested to hear your opinion. Please email me. This is serious as i am plannin in geting one myself.
With a bed > 5.000 Euro, the bad thing is, you can not actualy realy test drive it. Yes, you can lie on it in the store for a couple of minutes, but you can’t sleep in it. Why is this so? You can test drive a car but not a bed. Why don’t the manufacturers setup some beds in hotels in strategic cities, then i could just book a room and sleep in such a bed for a night…

Like I wrote in the article “I can vouch that it actually works because I sleep better and more solid than I did in my previous bed.“ My boyfriend sometimes has a sore back and this bed always makes it go away. The matrass is very important too, in fact it is the most expensive part.

@Martijn:
Funny that when one thinks of design furniture, the Barcelona Chair always
comes in mind. I have been dreaming of owning a Barcelona for a long time myself, but scrapped it from my wishlist the first second I sat in one. It looks great, but to me personally a good design is not only a matter of good looks, but rather the right combination of form and function. I think the Barcelona chair is just too uncomfortable.
I am aware of the fact that this chair was designed by Mies for the German Pavilion at theBarcelona Exposition of 1929, And the Spanish king probably only sat on it for a very limited time. The looks of the chair were the most important at that time, so one could argue that it
is good design, because it serves it’s purpose.
If you are a doctor, on the lookout for some stylish seating to put in the waiting room,... give it a go.
If you’re looking for nice and comfortable furniture for your home, that you will actually use a lot,... there are other, better options.
Just my opinion though…

Hi! That seems to be a very comfortable bed! I have been looking for one too these days. My old matrass could use some better use than ruining my back and neck.
By the way.. I have been writing some articles of this kind too lately for my second blog. However, as I plan to merge both blogs into one, I have not published them.
Those pics are awesome.

Love the idea of including this in the blog. I’ve read on and off for a while, but will now be a regular reader/commenter. You have really inspired me with my designs!
I’ll be traveling through Belgium next year on year long backpacking trip and I hope to meet people with any fraction of your tastes and talents!
