Get the grunge out
2008 at 12.47 pm posted by Veerle
If you want to get your hands dirty and create your own custom set of grunge brushes you’ll love the January/February issue of Layers Magazine. I’ve written an extended article on how to create these brushes.
From creating the drops till brushes
It's a tutorial that uses both Illustrator and Photoshop. I'll explain just one of the ways to create your own brushes from scratch. It's fun for sure because it means you can go wild— the dirtier the better :D
Layers Magazine
My tutorial is of course not the only reason to buy the magazine as it is full of tips for Adobe applications. To give you an idea what you'll find in the January/February issue:
- Get amazing audio quality using Adobe Soundbooth CS3 and Audition 3
- Creating a future San Jose within 30 years with Bert Monroy
- From GoLive to DreamWeaver, conversion kit
- Evoluton of a photo shoot by Rick Sammon
- Photoshop Lightroom, working with database catalogs
- Indesign, the power of opentype
- ... and much more about Flash, Acrobat...
A copy is yours for $9.95 US or 10.95 CAN.

Wow, very nice!
Gonna try to find the magazine around here and have a look!
2
Looks like an awesome magazine. Too bad I’m not from the US… Maybe I can get my school to import some of them ;D
3
Looks interesting, but now I need to find a store in Belgium that sells it!
4
I couldn’t resist it anymore. I had to subscribe the digital version. Or I sure hope I clicked the digital option. Haven’t received any confirmation through email. Boy that could turn to a ugly Visa bill ;) Oh well.. Everything about that magazine looks and sounds really nice.

I read this entry over and over thinking you forgot to include your tutorial. Then I had one of those forehead-slapping moments when I realized that you wrote the tutorial FOR Layers. Durr.
I need to renew my subscription. I had one for about a year then let it run out when it seemed they were giving more attention to After Effects and Acrobat, but now it looks like PShop and Illustrator are back at the forefront.

You actually made me want to buy a copy :p
@unexpected: ²nd that

I went over to Borders, but they only had the Dec/Jan issue. Any idea when it hits stands?

Hope to be able to pick this up. Lets hope they stock in Scotland!

Great Job and a great magazine! I just actually picked up the Nov/Dec issue today and saw your website featured in the top spot of “Web Watch - More Cool Sites For Creatives” and came to congratulate you. Awesome!

I just downloaded one of the downloads for the current issue. They only provide a page per download???
Wow, they sure hide their secrets a lot. I think more and more magazines (e-magz) are beginning to have their free downloads, but I guess I’m wrong.
Nevertheless, If it’s being sold in Indonesia, I would gladly buy it. It’s a waste to have it sent from abroad.

Nice Veerle! Do they sell that magazine in the US? I’ve never seen it before.

Grunge is definitely on a down hill path , it’s no where as popular as it was before which is a good thing cause it was used everywhere, now it’s more at a healthy level in my opinion.

Hi Veerle,
Where can we get a physical copy of this in Belgium? I’m definitely interested ;-).

Funny thing is I subscribe for the magazine and was not aware that you had a feature there.

Looks like a great article! I just happened to subscribe to Layers last month and this will be my first issue - perfect timing. Love your site and I have learned soooo much from you. Your tutorials and blogging are truly appeciated.

I have a friend who gets this magazine from time to time, so yes you can get it in the us. I believe she picks it up at University Book Store here in Seattle, but I’m not sure. I only look at it for the art work because they always seem have some really good illustrations. And the tips are really helpful as well. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome, you are without doubt one of the world’s leading designers!
One quick question - which font have you used where it says: “I <3 disco”? Brilliant font, love it!

Can i get the journal also in Germany?
nice article - thx for sharing

Too bad the magazine is so expensive to deliver here in Slovenia. Nevertheless, I’ll try to get a copy of this issue. Love your tips Veerle!

Great tutorial Veerle! Just got my issue in the mail yesterday - very easy to follow as usual:)

I received the magazine last week, haven’t had time to look into it yet though.
I don’t think you can separate copies in Belgium, I think you have to subscribe for a year and then they send it to you by mail.

I learned about brushes last month. It is quite amazing what you can do with it. I am currently building up a directory of favorite brushes. Maybe I will find new ones within the magazine?
