Firefox 0.9 is out
2004 at 02.27 am posted by Veerle Pieters
A perfect opportunity to switch to FireFox if you’re still surfing with Internet Explorer. FireFox is not only a more secure browser but also a close follower of web standards, for this reason alone it should have a place on your HD. It’s still a beta but on my Mac it is as stable as Safari.
I've been using it for months on PC (WinXP) also without any trouble. So what would make this browser awesome?
- For starters a cool theme created by Jon Hicks
- An update to the rendering of fields and buttons
- A way to import my Safari bookmarks and keep it up to date
The Firefox website hasn't been updated yet as of now but you can already download it here. Surf the net in style!
UpdateAfter some looking arround i've found the 0.9 page of FireFox.

Hmm IMHO it is only the Release Candidate for 0.9 which will come out on monday…
2
@TeRanEX: The 0.9 page doesn’t have any info that it is not the version you’re referring to or that another version shall be released on Monday. I was notified by Version Tracker about this release btw. I saw the link on Slashdot also.
No biggie if there’s another release on Monday, replacement is as easy as drag and drop on Mac ;-)

“A testing candidate of Mozilla Firefox 0.9 is now available from mozilla.org. <snip/>. We are still looking to do a 0.9 final sometime Monday.”

Cheers for letting me know, Veerle. I read about the new relase first on your site.
5
@TeRanEX: As the man says the more people who download it and test it the better the final will be. So why wait ;-) Mine is running nicely btw.
6
But you have to reinstall all your extensions :-( and the location of the preferences was changed (again) on MacOS X :-(
But apart from that it works great.

TeRanEx is right, the official 0.9 isn’t released until Monday.
Also - I didn’t create the theme - sadly! I just did the icon. It was Kevin Gerich and Stephen Horlander who cam up Pinstripe and Winstripe:

I’d love to take the credit for their work though!

@Jon, I guess I’m the impatient type, if it were up to me I would already be running Tiger :-) sigh… all the waiting… guess that’s why I already installed 0.9 ;-)
It was sort of a hint to you to create a theme for FireFox as you did for the example of the Shiira browser on your blog, it’s SO gorgeous! I was aware you didn’t create the Pinstripe theme. ;-) But a day has only 24 hours and not enough of them are to play :-D
It’s actually more like a wish list to make FireFox perfect for me ;-)

For your interest. Neil Turner wrote a comprehensive article on this new release.

FYI, BookIt will synch bookmarks between Safari & Firefox (although it hasn’t been updated in a while and still calls it Firebird). I paid for this little shareware program last year when I was doing some heavy-duty bookmark tidying, and it saved me a lot of work. There may be better/cheaper alternatives (and of course the best thing would be Shiira-style bookmark compatibility), but I like BookIt.

I’m in your way, i’m trying to evangelize everyday to change IE users to Firefox users.
Don’t give up.

Really sorry Veerle - I’d misread that. I thought it was highlighting new features, and lots of people have credited me with the pinstripe theme (including MacUser UK magazine!)
Creating themes for XUL apps is _so_ much harder than Cocoa apps. I’ve been having a go, but I end up breaking Firefox really easily!
13
Sorry - also forgot to say:
Also, try the free Safari Bookmark Exporter. I use Bookit too, but I find that exporter is easier as use Safari more than Firefox. (Doesn’t sync though)
Also, I think Mozilla’s plan is to have native-look widgets for the 1.0 version of OS X Firefox. Camino doesn’t use native widgets, it fakes them, so they should be able to do the same. I think that’ll make a big difference to OS X users.

@Jon, congratz on the credits ;-) Thanks for the cool Safari Bookmark Exporter tip, I’ll definitely try this one out. I also use Safari more often.
You lost me on the widgets part Jon, I’m just a simple designer :-S Do I have to see this as the Konfabulator widgets? So if you drop in such a widget, FireFox changes its look?
I also didn’t know that it was that hard to create such a theme for FireFox (apart from the “look” I mean).
15
@Jan, thanks for the link to Neil Turner’s article. An interesting read! ;-)
16
@Manuti, I’ll never give up! Standards are the way to go, so standard browsers disserve all the support.

Veerle - by ‘widgets’ I mean form buttons, text fields and drop down menus. I keep hearing them being referred to as widgets so its kind stuck with me.

Cool! Just cool!
