Expression Engine contest and Veerle’s blog 2.0
2006 at 04.23 am posted by Veerle Pieters
This will be the last post from now untill March 1st. Don’t worry I will be back in full force with Veerle’s blog 2.0. Yes, the cat is out of the bag I’m working on my redesign as we speak. I’m going to need all the time that I can get to pull this one of. Remember, I have to do client work in between too, so that’s the reason that everything is going in full stop mode ;-)
I’ve been postponing it long enough and now seems to be the perfect time because the folks at pMachine have a cool contest up regarding my favorite system Expression Engine. I think I’m going to enter the contest if I manage to get everything done by February 28th. There’s still a huge list of things that need to be done like importing all my old 400+ entries, cleaning up the code etc.
You should check out Expression Engine it’s a very flexible and powerful solution. You still have a few days left to enter yourself and best of all the core version is free. There are $15,000 prices divided in several categories.
So I hope you stick around for a while and come back on March 1st for version 2.0. In the mean time you get a little teaser in Cameron Moll’s Screen Grab Confab, vol. V this time in a group pool on Flickr.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with! :)
2
cant wait for march 1st to arrive :)
3
That sounds great, I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
4
I’m also looking forward but maybe you could skip 2.0 and launch 3.0 version.
5
No doubt it will be worth the wait (I doubt if you can consider a week to be a long waiting period). And knowing your designerskills I’m hoping to find a tutorial on ‘the making of version 2.0’ among the first posts in the new version. ;-)
6
Oh, that tiny teaser just doesn’t give anything away does it. I’m sure it’ll be as ‘designer’ as this one is. :-)
7
Looking forward to the new design. Should we expect to see anything new?
8
Looking forward to the new design. Maybe you could blog a little bit about the creation of the new site?
9
Can i recommend something?...
Your URL’s say something like “id=439_0_2_0_C” in your posts… maybe you can change it to show “2006/02/22/expression-engine-contest-and-veerle’s-blog-2.0/“
I think is just better that way…
10
Great to see you going on. Im very looking forward to see how it will look and feel =)
11
2.0 is sooooooo 2005 !
Can’t wait :)

Wow only about 2 weeks or so for a new design? I’m already working about 2 months on mine and can’t totally get into it..

16
Yes, the redesign looks awesome. It seems like there is new fond for more vivid colors in the web, I like it! Hope things work out for you Veerle.
17
Since you’re migrating from pmachine to EE I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ll come up with, Veerle. I’m pretty sure it’s goig to be kick-ass!

Seems like a waste of money to purchase a blogging system when there are so many out there that are free and open source. Open source means the community helps support it too with lots of free add-ons.
My personal favorite blogging system is Serendipity as it has a really nice media manager. Serendipity as it has a really nice media manager.

@Chris. EE has a free version of their great CMS. It is by far one of the better ones out there, along with TextPattern. TXP is open source. EE only partially. They both have a great and super knowledgable user community who offer superb support. I use both the paid and the free version of EE and TextPattern. I think that they have a very different user base and offer some compelling featurs, They each meet different needs. esp the paid version of EE.

Your right EE is free which I missed. I installed EE after numerous screens just to register with their site. After installing the program I found it to be quite raw and basic when it comes to doing a posting. Also it had a very complicated interface that didn’t make managing the site very easy.
I have used textpattern before and it has the same problems. Serendipity has a huge advantage as it has wysiwyg to enter your posts and combined with the awesome file manager for photos it makes it a breeze to do your postings. The templates are easy to configure and customize so you can make the site look how you want quickly.
Maybe you have lots of time to focus on working with the blogging systems that you mention but I am so strapped for time that I really can’t afford it.

That’s why you can’t take most of these kind of systems far enough. Ok, good enough for a basic site that looks boxy but not If you’re setting no boundaries in your design. Expression engine may not be so easy, but I guarantee you it will convert any design to a dynamicly driven site. Wait and see ;-)
Expression engine has also a file management that works great. Regarding the WYSIWYG editor they ALWAYS mess up semantically correct code so I rather use the simple buttons like in EE or type the elements myself. The Word like editors are not like that and I’ve seen on plenty occasions what they can do wrong. EE manages to keep your site clean and to me that’s what counts. The interface is also much cleaner then s9y and to me as designer that’s important too.

I can’t wait - I know it will rock!

Hallo Veerle,
as you I am working on a redesign of several web sites now. I’ve been looking for a good cms that deserve me needs now for so long. I was thinking about choosing one of the following: textpattern, wordpress 2.0 or movable type .... but then your article brought me up with the idea of testing EE.
I downloaded EE just right away and I’m quite nervous now what I will get out of the zip-box (-:
Have fun with the redesign. I’m looking foreward to see it soon!
Cheers from Salzburg

@Engelbert. If you want a site that is “more” than a blog, you can’t go wrong in chossing EE. It is a very powerfull cms for general websites. it has a learning curver, but it will reward you once you master it. I am looking forward to see what Veerle comes up with. (PS TextPattern is also powerfull)
25
@vanni: Yes it’s true: TextPattern is also powerfull. By the way: for the beginning I think it is enough to try the free Core version of EE, but afterwards would you suggest to buy a “personal” version?
26
@engelbert. I think there are a couple of features of the paid versions of EE that are worth paying for; most notably the Photo Gallery module. But you can do a lot with Core-EE. You should build a site using it as it takes some time to become familiar with it powerful features. Then you can move to the paid version. Anyways that is how i started. Did two fairly easy blogs to become familiar with. You may find that core-EE does all you need. And of course if you are using it on a commercial site then you should use one of the paid versions. all the best…
27
Yeah cool site keep it coming! Cheerio
28
One of the main reasons to upgrade to the personal version of EE is the member management.
EECore doesn’t have a membership module. You can manually add members from the backend, but it is a limitation.
29
Veerle…I’m blown away…I’m downloading EE right now as we speak! I’m hoping to come up with something 25% as good as this looks. I look forward to seeing you at SXSW!
30
You should win the top prize hands down! this is the most beautiful site I have seen in a very long time.
31
Love the new look and feel…Great work :o)
32
Wow! I am very impressed, Veerle! Your last design didn’t do you justice, but this design screams your capabilites! I love your work, and I especially love this design. Great job! Congrats! :)
