EECI2009, the first ExpressionEngine and CodeIgniter Conference
2009 at 10.47 am posted by Veerle Pieters
In October I’ll be traveling to Leiden, The Netherlands. Never been there but apparently the city is famous for its almshouses, university, museums and glorious history - and the spirit of the Golden Age lives on here. This is a place where Rembrandt was born and inspired so many other influential painters. Read on for free tickets and a special Veerle’s blog reader discount.
I'll be speaking at the conference
I'm excited to announce that I'll be speaking at this first European ExpressionEngine and CodeIgniter Conference. The conference is scheduled to take place on October 22-23, Leiden, The Netherlands. Looking at the speaker list it feels a bit intimidating that there is so much developer talent scheduled and that I'll be the lonely designer outside her familiar habitat ;)

Conference Schedule
The first day of the conference will be packed with talks from some really great minds in the community. The ExpressionEngine team will be represented by Leslie Camacho and Derek Allard. I'm also excited to finally talk to Simon Collison again because I think we last met years ago at @Media. Simon was one of the people that got me excited about ExpressionEngine after being a pMachine user myself. There are more fine folks on the list so this will be an interesting experience for me. Second day will be filled with nine different workshops to help you fine tune your ExpressionEngine or CodeIgniter skills.
Designing and using the new EE 2.0 (beta) interface
My talk will be about the work we did on the design for the EE 2.0 (beta) interface. Get to know the full design process behind the new ExpressionEngine 2.0 (beta) GUI. Find out why and how certain design decision were made. What was the thinking process to come up with an interface that meets the expectations of hardcore developers as well as beginners, clients and designers. All followed up with a practical hands on example of how to use this fabulous new version seen through a designer's eye.
5 free tickets + 25% incentive discount
I'm excited that I'm able to give away 5 tickets for the conference day. This ticket will give you free access to the "Welcome to EECI2009 Drink" on Wednesday night, the Conference Day on Thursday itself and the Big Part-EE with Music, Food and Drinks. Don't worry if you aren't a winner because there is also a special Veerle's blog reader discount incentive of 25% on the conference + workshops (€350,-) or on a day ticket for conference (€250,-).
Register with the 25% discount
All you need to do to enjoy this 25% incentive discount is go to the register page and the discount should already be in place. If for some reason it didn't work you add this code:
- CNXV64158DUOH
in the available promo code box at the top of the page.
What do you need to do to win?
Tell me in the comments why you prefer using ExpressionEngine or CodeIgniter. The 5 most inspiring quotes will have secured their free ticket. The contest runs until Monday September 14th, 9am CET.

Why, why me… Well, as i’am a new player on this wonderfull market, I hear so many great things about ExpressionEngine/CodeIgniter. So, this conference can give me the opportunity and the chance to speak with some nice and wonderfull people and let me know better ExpressionEngine.
So If you would give me this chance, i’ll be thankfull! :-)
2
I prefer using ExpressionEngine because it makes other people happy!

I use both Expression Engine and CodeIgniter. They have both enabled me to significantly cut down on time frames for projects. I get to use my own clean XHTML code without worrying about the system placing some mind boggling extra code in my websites.
The flexibility that EE gives me makes me a loyal EE user. I love you EE! LOL!
4
I prefer using Codeigniter for my projects because it is lightweight (small footprint), clean coded, easy to use, easy to understand, writting in PHP (which most users understand) and no additional libraries required. (which is handy when installing on a remote server which you don’t manage)

Ooo - I’ve been eyeing up the EECI conference for a while and would love to go. I’m a recent convert to EE. Here’s why I’m in love with it:
I switched from WordPress to ExpressionEngine and all I got was a faster site, a cleaner admin interface, clearer documentation, a fanatical support team, a boost to my business, a warm glow inside, and a thousand more reasons to travel to The Netherlands on October 22nd.
6
I very much enjoy working on EE because it’s lightweight, easy to work with, and very flexible.
I feel very confident using EE for my clients and they love it too!
7
There a numerous reasons for using Expression Engine, but my main point is it’s ability to do almost anything with it. You can bend ExpressionEngine in such way that allow you to build almost any website that you’ll need.
Most people don’t realize it, and we are spoiled with it, but Expressionengine’s {exp:weblog:entries tag is truly unique. I haven’t seen such a flexible system for quick development that is this robust.
Have i talked about the documentation? No? It’s great! I’ve been developing for Magento (eCommerce) for some time, where there almost isn’t any documentation, then going back to Expression Engine truly is a bliss.

EE haiku:
An engine
tuned to deliver
the expression
of perfection.
9
I like Codeigniter for saving time in web development using the CI tools, good documentation and security, for instance, the core can be located out of the web directory ;)
10
I’ve used ExpressionEngine as my primary deployment engine for the last three years, and due to occasional holes in features and needs, have just begun picking up CodeIgniter to begin developing my own plugins. I’d love to attend the conference to aid the leap from a basic EE engineer to a full-fledged developer.
11
I have used Expression engine before and its indeed a good piece of software. However, I live in Los Angeles and have no plans to go to Netherlands soon, so, don’t consider me for the lotto.
Best of luck for the talk.
12
I use and love ExpressionEngine because the interface is easy to understand, support is friendly and top-notch, templating is powerful and easy to pick up, and I don’t need to install three modules, click through two submenus, then check/select twenty options, click “save”, then make changes to my templates just to list my last 10 posts (as with some other CMSs).
I would love to attend the conference as one of the (very) few EE developers from Japan. CMS use is fairly new over here, and I think EE has a great chance of making it “big in Japan”.

I’m very much a best-tool-for-the-job kind of guy, and Expression Engine is more and more the best tool for the job. When you put the best designers and developers for the platform together in a room, you end up inspired, or so I’m hoping.
14
EE is great and I’d love to be able to make this, it’s great they’re doing it. I can’t bring myself to staying from FOSS though and I’ve never had any major downfall with alternatives.
15
E xcellent user interface
X pert support
P ublishing so easy
R eliable framework
E ndless possibilities
S olid and Stable
S imple to manage
I ngenious infrastructure
O ptions options options: I love options
No comparison!
16
I prefer ExpressionEngine because it made it possible for a marketing geek (non developer) like me to learn how to code fairly complex websites.

A little over two years ago, a friend of me and myself decided to start our own company. He as an frontend developer, me as an graphic designer. We didn’t had real business-experience, but we thought we could start something great if we would work hard, our approach would be right, our planning tight and so on. One of the first thing we had to do, was to pick a CMS we could specialize in, one that was suitable for small clients and for bigger clients. After a lot of research we accidentally bumped into Expression Engine, but before we had the time to completely figure it out we got our first client - and a website had to be build. We decided to take the risk and build this website using Expression Engine, and everything worked out perfectly.
Looking back, I’m really glad we choose Expression Engine back then. Not only because of it’s scalability, it’s reliable framework, it’s awesome infrastructure blabla …. just because of the simple fact I never have to ask the developer ‘is this possible’ while pointing at my design. Oh, and also: I love the community, it has saved our ass a million times!
See you guys at the conference!

As a backend designer you always look for ways to save time and to simplify things for your end-users. For that reason we have chosen for Expression Engine. Thanks to Expression Engine and its community we can deliver faster our projects and spend more time on end-user experience, time that we normally used to upgrade and maintain our backend systems. This resulted in happier customer’s who easily can manage their web applications.
We and our customers look forward to Expression Engine 2.0.
I have just one conclusion:
Expression Engine means faster delivering your projects and delivering great end-user experience.

The best part after i’ve created a site with Expression Engine is when i tell the client:
- It´s done, now fly!

I’m pro-CI, I write articles about CI in PHP Solutions magazine, and I tried to have a free ticket for the conference but no way, I couldn’t…I have a very tiny budget :-(
My Professional website http://bleekom.org is powered by CI and I would like to make CI known better in France by meeting the best EE&CI; actors…
21
As a designer and front-end coder there so much I could say about how ExpressionEngine allows me to create far more dynamic and complex web sites that would otherwise be out of my back-end coding expertise. But what I love most about EE is the community—a great group of users and coders doing great things, sharing tools and ideas, and willing to help others starting out. In many ways software is only as good as its users and in that way, EE is pretty fantastic.
22
I love EE because of how it allows me to code with flexibility, speed and compliance, which helps me give my clients a great website that they are empowered to manage themselves. EE is all about empowerment, and I love that!
23
I forgot to say why I like CI, because it’s the fastest DRY KISS (Don’t Repeat Yourself - Keep it Simple and Specific) and as Rasmus said, it’s the fastest, and now that CI 1.7.2 is released and compatible with PHP5.3, it’s going to be the fastest ever…!!!
24
Nice to read all the great comments about CI & EE.
I’m also joining and was wondering, the wednesday welcome and the Big Part-EE, is that included in the ticket (which I already bought)?
25
I have to be honest Veerle, I haven’t truly tried and tested Expression Engine, so I will have to give this conference a miss. However based on your recommendation, I will definitely test the waters with it. Good luck with your presentation.
26
I’ve done some projects with EE lately and it’s a great CMS. I’d love to go but I won’t be able to make it to see your talk due to my teaching schedule. Have fun.
27
CI has simple structure and gives you the best environment for starting up from the ground custom web based projects.
With C-like coding (PHP) and working with the power of CI framework, you can realistically achieve extraordinary fast development and always be focused on the business goals of your web app and not get lost or find difficulties on the used web technology.
My code has never been maintainable and sustainable before CI… now it is :)

“The Expression Engine template engine is the most powerful, flexible & easy to understand template system I’ve ever seen during the 15 years of being a professional GUI designer. Combine it with all the other amazing out of the box features, and the sky isn’t the limit anymore!”
I’m ready to get inspired by Veerle’s talk in Leiden + the entire conference, and I am also convinced that attending this conference will have a huge positive impact on future ExpressionEngine projects.
29
I love Expression Engine because it doesn’t compromise my designs. It’s back-end going hand in hand with front-end and never having a fight…
And it’s easy to be passionate about EE, just look at the community that keeps making it better!
Expression Engine helped me make better websites.
30
I love Code Igniter because though I’m a Web designer it makes me feel like I’m a top-notch php developer…
31
I personally love Expression Engine. Veerle was the one who made me use Expression Engine for the first time. She told me, “give it a try”.
Thats what I tell all other people who are questioning me, what CMS to use.
I’ll just tell them : “Give it a try, and you know why”.
So the best way to discribe why to prefer Expression Engine….is:
“Give it a try, and you know why!”
