DropSend

I am working on a redesign for for several touristic regio sites here in Belgium. If you think of vacation, you want to see pictures and when I start designing stuff, I want my files to be as big as possible to have all my options open. That’s when e-mailing large files comes into play. You know, we have an Xserve and an FTP account for clients but not all of them are happy or technology minded to use it. You probably have been there too, some of them would even mail 100MB if it would be possible :o)
That’s when I discovered DropSend a service that provides the answer to all the above problems. It’s a simple and elegant solution that uses the internet and is developed by Carsons Systems. You either use the web interface or download a little application for Mac OS X or Windows to send your files.
When you set it up you have four different plans to choose from. Yes there is a free option too which limits you to 250MB storage and 5 e-mail sends a month. Next is the $5 option with 1GB storage and 15 e-mail sends a month. For $9 you can store 10GB and send 45 emails. The fourth option costs $19 and has unlimited sends per month and 25GB storage.
The interface is clear and easy to use, it just concentrates on sending and storing files. You have an Inbox, Sent box and Storage folder which can contain nested folders. When you have sent a file to a client you can check if it has been picked up, you can even receive an e-mail confirmation. Following the upload process is being done dynamicly. The very first time I used it the upload didn’t work in Safari, don’t know if this was bad luck but now everything works flawlessly.
DropSend also has an address-book to store your contacts for easy access. DropSend could also be used by printers since these folks have a daily battle with large files and something like DropSend could provide them an easy solution as well. There are others out there but I like the ones that have payed attention to design and I feel at home here ;-)

Too bad, in the transition we lost a lively discussion.

I put together a collection of other sites that are 100% Free for online file storage and sending. If Drop Send doesn’t fit the bill for you, try one of these.
I’ve found these online storage sites to be a great addition to my design toolbox, because as you said, some clients are a bit technically challenged.
