Disable Snap to Grid in a snap

2005 at 01.22 am posted by Veerle Pieters

The Snap to Grid is a handy (Photosop) function, but have you ever been a bit frustrated because it gets in your way? OK maybe you think, no problem I just hit command + shift + semicolon to switch it on or off. OK that’s one way, and the most common way indeed.

Disable Snap to Grid by holding down the control key

But have you ever considered holding down the control key while making your selection or while cropping? I find this a nice trick, particular when you just want to disable the snap function just for the one moment ;-) I use this a lot particular when I need to move a guide and it snaps to an element (because it’s in the current/active layer).

To try it out, make sure that holding down the control key is your last action. So don’t hold down the key first.

Exactly! I found this out by accident about a couple of months ago and since that point I use it by default wich means I don’t even turn of the stg funcion at all.

Same with the move-Tool - if you press ctrl, you can move the selected layer

Increases the workflow-speed!

Cheers

My favourite setting is to switch off snapping by default. Only when I need a snap (that’s not that often) , I press Control.

Must start using this,

opposite to your tip, but still useful for guides (that most people probably know), when creating a new guide hold down “shift” and it will snap to points on the ruler

@Veerle: top tip!

@Phil, pressing ALT will switch the orientation of the ruler Horizontal > Vertical and vice versa.

That is amazing! I never knew about that! I thought the Ctrl+Shift+; shortcut was handy, but that’s going to save me a lot of time!

Ctrl+Shift+; also works in Illy & InDy to turn off snap to guides. Ctr+; turns guides on and off.

I knew about this through the podcast “PhotoshopTV” (highly recommended). Sad there is no the same “easy” way for windows users.
