Choosing 10 favorite paintings, a decision breaker?
2005 at 06.25 am posted by Veerle Pieters
A few months back I introduced Flickr to my best friend Sylvie. She is, like me, a graphic designer.
Although I would rather call her a graphic artist because most of her work consists of illustration work. She loves to draw and paint and I think she’s very good at it.
She often asks me for my opinion or advice on things. This time she is considering to create Christmas cards from a selection of her paintings, but she has a hard time to make a selection of 10 paintings. She can’t really decide… That’s why I’ve promised to lend her an extra hand. So I ask you, my readers to help her make the final selection. Which are your favorite 10? I hope I can count on you.
If you’re not into art, illustrations etc. I would suggest to browse anyway, you’ll find some pictures of me in there as well ;-) Don’t hesitate to leave a comment or to subscribe to her feed. Go and give her some love :-)
PS: She is not a web designer. My next step is to introduce her some basics about Web Standards.

I’ve been here before, but I come and go…
I am a fellow web designer and painter, and I would love to help, but I am confused: how can I choose my top 10 if there are only 9 paintings? Please enlighten this poor soul :)

@Hiddenson, you are right :-S Seems like not all paintings are in this set. Please just go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/51401680@N00]her Flickr homepage and look from there (most are on the first pages), sorry about this. Thanks again :-)

Not ten, but I liked:
1) the girl who wanted to catch the stars
2) SCHILDERIJ_04
3) My personal website, and
4.) DSCN2770.JPG
for cards, but rather enjoyed
1) SCHILDERIJ_04
2) DSCN2770.JPG
3) DSCN2763.JPG
4) DSCN2848.JPG
5) SCHILDERIJ_12
as my favorites. But I think a few of them are to morose for cards.

Though I like most paintings (really, I do, in fact I relate them to my artistic research), I face the same problem as your friend: should I use my previous art on newer events, or produce new art for the occasion?
I feel that none of these paintings express what I expect from a Christmas card, except perhaps “the girl who wanted to catch the stars”, and schilderijen 4 en 7.
That being said, the artwork itself is very interesting, and I will comment on Flickr for art’s sake, not for Xmas sake :)
Hope I helped (a bit), and wish your friend luck in her project.

Hi. I’m actually very fond of the line drawings from her schetsen set which are all prefixed 051029.
THey’re lovely and a bit of a christmas antidote (but take note, I always end up avoiding anything christmassy anyway).
I figure these line drawings are a bit more personal - I know I’d love to get a christmas card like that.
(and to be cliched - it means the cards are for life, not just for christmas) (ahem)

Here are the ones I like:
1) sylf_2
2) the girl who wanted to catch the stars
3) bowing
Sylvie has a real talent, I browsed through all the paintings and sketches and enjoyed it. Love the colors.
I think that “the girl who wanted to catch the stars” is very much in the Christmas spirit. Maybe some of the other paintings might not be christmassy enough though.
Some of the sketches could work too.

The bowing boy is great and fits really well: bowing

I think that on page 7, the DSCN series of the red/green flowers and vases would any one make a nice Christmas card, especially DSCN2695 and DSCN2693.
My favorite was the Princess - it reminds me of the illustrations for “Le Petit Prince” and has a very quaint and delicate kind of look to it.
