Attended my first Geek dinner

Yesterday in Ghent I attended my first geek dinner whoha! Always a bit of a surprise such a thing since you actually don’t know anybody there (at least not in person). The idea of the geek dinner was started by Erwin van Hunen and Cindy De Smet. It’s safe to say that it was a success.
The atmosphere was good and Geert and I had some interesting conversations. We talked a lot with Frederik of Scene24 and his friend Pieter (aka KPI) who recently switched to Mac. Together with Karel Uyttendaele, probably the first readers of my blog that I’ve ever met in person. It’s nice to put a face to the names.
The long table was a bit of an obstacle to talk to everyone but who knows next time we get the hang of it. I also managed to talk a little with Luc Van Braekel, a blogger that recently got some TV exposure on Canvas (the BBC of Belgium). Pretty sure his blog is one of the most visited Dutch blogs.
Other geeks there were Filip Borloo, Erik Evrard, Peter Forret (a fellow deep house lover), Yves Hanoulle, Tom Mestdagh, Jonas Riemslagh (aka dIVUS), Maarten Schenk, Pascal Van Hecke, Frederik Van Outryve, Bart Vanhauwaert, Bart Becks and Visual Hugo.
Photos of the event can be viewed on Luc’s Pixagogo album.

Awww! that’s nice, who is classified a ‘geek’ anyways, asks a ‘wannabe geek’?

sounds like you had a good time.
noticed a ‘send receive’ photo in the album. Don’t tell me you guys played phone tag ‘while’ eating dinner :p
Pretty cool. :)

Where did this take place ? (just out of interest as I live in Gent) And how do you get involved in something like this ? Anyhow, seemed like everybody had a geeky time ;-)

I think the plural of geek is geeks, not geekers (no offence or such). Looks like a nice get together BTW ;-)

Nice we need to have a geek dinner here in the states.

It was indeed a pleasure to meet the unknown faces behind what you read everyday. The past days i’ve been giving intensive courses in Windows Server 2003 management, so i’m very eager to see how an XServe with Mac OS X Server does all its tasks like DNS, group and policy management, etc…
It was also very interesting to hear your experiences starting from the era before the world wide web, then the first browsers, the rise of Internet Explorer and dark ages for Mac, the coming of new technologies…
Although a quieter place with a better setting could have given us interesting group discussions, i enjoyed the Geek dinner (especially because of the Duoh-duo). Thx a lot!

@ashsthro: Maybe if you spend a whole day behind the computer ;-)
@Raven: The meeting was at Backstage Ghent. I got invited by some of my readers.
@Markie: You’re right! Thanks for the tip ;-)
@kpi: look for a “get to know Xserve moment” real soon ;-)
