Only 9 days and I’m off to London to join the @media conference. Not only am I looking forward to this event because of the interesting speeches and learning material, but also because of the social aspect. You know, putting faces to the familiar names.
Only 9 days and I’m off to London to join the @media conference. Not only am I looking forward to this event because of the interesting speeches and learning material, but also because of the social aspect. You know, putting faces to the familiar names.
From all the stuff I read about the SXSW I’m sure there will be a lot of fun too. The most rememberable moments are those casual meetings in between. It’ll also be my first event of that kind (CSS and web standards) so I’m very anxious and curious of what will come and how this will be. It’s a reassuring feeling that there will be at least two gentlemen that will introduce me to the other ‘lads’ :-D
But I’m sure I’ll feel on the same wavelength with a lot of people, you know a bit like in Star Trek, where you have the collective of the Borg… Oh boy I’m sounding much too nerdy now.
After the conference, I’m not leaving right away. I’m ready to explore London at the weekend, maybe a trip to Pacha who knows. Now that would be fun ;-) It’s been years since I’ve been there, so I’m looking forward to this part of the trip too. And of course it wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the London Apple Store. Any other tips you can think of that are a definite must while I’m there in London? Or are you going too? Would be good to know who will be there.

Damn, I wish I had the time to go. Can’t you “beam me over” once you’re there ;-) ?
Enjoy your stay, and when you’re back I’m sure we’ll see lots of interesting new stuff on your blog !
2
Veerle,
A suggestion: a second visit to the London Apple Store. Probably followed by a third…

niceeee, take some photos.... :D

I hope you enjoy the event and London too! I live in London, but won’t be able to go to the event. It’s a shame! Hopefully you’ll give us all the coverage! :)

Veerle: Just the other day I was thinking about who I may run into in London, and I got hung up on how I would pronounce your name. Would ‘Fayrluh’ be close enough?
6
@Raven and @Soroush, I’ll do my best to give you an update on everything. It will depend on the WiFI connectivity in the hotel room ... and also if I will spend much time in the hotel room of course ... probably not ;-) But of course I will give you the full story afterwards.
@Jochem, haha LOL! That depends on the the size of my wallet :-P
@Static, I’ll do thatl.
@Roger Johansson, a lot of people wonder how to pronounce my name and you are very close to the right pronounciation. The accent is on the first part of my name, on ‘Fayr’. Most English speaking natives think it’s more like ‘Furlee’, with the accent on the ‘lee’… sounds cute but it’s not correct. But you are from Sweden and my guess is that you will have less or no problem, since some Swedish vowels are close to the Dutch ones. The double ‘ee’ sound doesn’t really exist in English… Also, the name Veer (from www.veer.com) is pronounced different then in my name. Looking forward meeting you btw :-)

Yeah I guess me being Swedish is one reason. Another is that I used to live in South Africa when I was a kid. I picked up a bit of Afrikaans, and it’s pretty similar to Dutch, so…
See you at breakfast ;-)

I was wondering how to pronounce you name too Veerle if I bumped into you.
I’m looking forward to the conference, it looks excellent. Re, stuff to see in the London. Try The Design Museum on the south bank, near Tower Bridge - it’s got a great bookshop.

Hi Veerle;
Unfortunately, I shall be in Corfu with my girlfriend during the @media conference and won’t be back till the Sunday .... if you’re at Heathrow Airport on Sunday on your way home, look out for me!
By the way, you will always be “Vurle” to me, I can’t get used to the correct way to pronounce your name LOL!

Hi veerle,
It has been a while ago since i was in London. Since you’re into Macs and Apples and all I suggest you take one of the London Walks. One in particular The Jack the ripper tour (aka MAC the knife). Or you could of course choose for the Beatles tour. That would bring you to the old EMI studios in Abbey Road (errr. Was that before or after they changed to APPLE records?). The Beatles also named their 1969 album, Abbey Road, after the studio. The cover photo for that album was taken outside Abbey Road studios. Remember Sir Paul Mccartney (aka MACCA) walking barefooted across the pedestrian crossing. Easy to get there by the subway. The studios are located in Abbey Road, in St John’s Wood in the City Of Westminster.
If I remember correctly, it’s only a couple of minutes away from subway station “White Chapel”.

Veerle,
I’ll be there too, and at the same hotel you’re in. We can talk Dutch with each other and drive all the others crazy! ;)
Roger,
Don’t worry, we’ll just beat the right pronounciation into you until you get it right ;-)

I have to admit that I wasn’t into the Design Museum when I went to it recently. If you want to see museums then the Science Museum and British Museum are very cool. The Tate modern and Tate Britain are also well worth going to. And if you want to do some proper tourist stuff then try the Tower of London and the Millennium wheel.
13
Looking forward to seeing you there. It should be good fun.
I’d second Andy’s recommendation for the British Museum. It’s quite an amazing place.
14
I’m Looking forward to meeting you all too.
As for sights in London, Greenwich Park’s a nice place to visit, check out the Royal Observatory if you have time.
15
To second a few things…
I wasn’t that impressed with the Design Museum either. “Is that it?” was the overwhelming thought.
And Greenwich Park is excellent (especially on a nice day), including the Royal Observatory located there. It’s the best of the London parks in my opinon. Not an obvious tourist destination, but a worthwhile trip.
A museum that’s not been mentioned is the Natural History Museum. It’s absolutely fantastic. One of my favourite spots in London. The building’s something to behold in itself.
See you at the conference!
