Mmmm Nice photo’s of Paris! What a beautifull day…imagine being trapped inside a building with the most luscious computer products the industry has to offer..
However, the new iMac looks like a fat tft screen. I can see them being used in an easylnternetCafe already…
One question: did they talk about the next version of Safari and what (css) it supports?
Thanks for the pics Veerle. Unfortunately the G5 iMac still Isn’‘t doing it for me. The phrase “Boxy but good” springs to mind. I want a BMW (or even a mini) in my front room, but the new iMacs look more like a family Volvo. The bastard child of an eMac and a G4 iMac.
I’m hoping that it’ll look better in person, allowing the subtle iPod styling to show through. However I fear this iMac iteration may be short lived. Another cube but without the class.
On the Q of Akaxaka, no there wasn’t any talk about the next CSS support in Safari RSS. Schiller went on and on of course about the RSS features of the next Safari but that was all on that subject.
Andy, I too hoped that the new iMac would look better in real (i was sitting in the back at the Keynote), but it didn’t. They look allright but that big portion of glass/white just underneith the screen really bothers me. It makes the whole design look cheap :-(. I understand they went for white instead of metal: the whole entry-level line is now white (ibook, imac, emac, +- the ipods) with all the high-end stuff in metal (powermac, powerbook, xserve, displays).
Reporting live from the show, for Veerle’s Blog, my name is Kenneth Himschoot :-)
I love the new design. Incredibly clean and functional. The beautiful aluminum stand with a hole for the power cable also serves as a cradle for the keyboard when not in use, or as a spot to put a pen tray.
Nothing is ‘tacked on’ without a reason. The white-space under the screen is perfect for post-it notes! The only thing it loses in respect to the previous model is the swivelling action of the monitor.
Thank you for the great photos and website Verlee!

@Andy: To compensate losing the arm that makes the iMac G4 so flexible maybe this is an idea that will appeal to you Andy. (something I found on the Apple iMac website.
The iMac offers the smallest footprint ever, but you can make that zero with an optional VESA mount. Hang it from the wall or swing it around on your desk. (coming soon to the Apple Store)
However comparing this new iMac to the Cube and saying that it will have a short life cycle is too far fetched for me, mainly because the Cube was way overpriced and that’s something that this new iMac has in his favor. Price is very competitive for what you actually get. If I would invest in such a Mac I would think long term.
True, I was really only comparing it to the cube in the sense that it may be short lived. Your right that the cube was a completely different beast. Great looking but overpriced. If anything the G5 iMac is the opposite. Great value for what you get, but not the prettiest Apple on the tree.
However I think people will be tempted by the specs and probably learn to live with the design. I wouldn’t be surprised if in 6 month time they update the casing by shaving off some depth and hopefully make the proportions a little more pleasing.
I’d be more than happy to have one in the office (it’d be much more powerful than my current G4 Powermac), I’m just not sure I’d want one in my house.

@Andy, yes you are right about the design, it’s so hard to top the iMac G4 sunflower model with an even nicer and more original look. Still, I like its simplicity and serenity.
If you like I can provide a link to a 10MB picture of the inside of the new iMac. It is a serious piece of craftsmanship to make it so thin. Beauty lies in the inside :-P
Or maybe this iMac movie “featuring Black Eyed Peas” will change you mind? ;-)
@Kenneth - Who said anything about RSS? As someone who likes their own site to work properly in Safari (and thus Konqueror), I’m pretty much only interested in the main css capabilities, such as css3 or the chunk of css2 they haven’t got in yet/working properly.
So did they say anthing about that? (The rendering capabilities in general that is)
Where’d you get the notion from that I wanted to know about RSS? (The irony is that I couldn’t care less ;)

@AkaXakA: Wow, don’t get your knickers in a twist here :-) He answered your question as you can see here:
On the Q of Akaxaka, no there wasn’t any talk about the next CSS support in Safari RSS
And the version that is coming in Mac OS X 10.4 is called Safari RSS in the developer build but that will change when it ships. He also stated that Phill ONLY talked about the RSS features that are coming in this version.
Ahhh, Why the heck are they calling it that? Bummer…I think I’ll get on the tail (er, blog) of one of the developers then.
Oh well, pardon the confusion then.

@ AkaXakA: It’s only in the beta that it is called Safari RSS. Guess those marketing boys didn’t have the time to think about something more suitable ;-)
