A look at Illustrator CS2 Live Paint

2005 at 02.10 am posted by Veerle

Illustrator CS2 Live PaintSome of you may wonder if an upgrade to CS2 is worthwhile. Well, I can’t decide for you, but I must say that the new Creative Suite has some nice cool features: Live Paint just to pick one. I’m just talking about Illustrator CS2 here, I didn’t even mention Brigde or the new Photoshop features. When time permits we’ll talk about those too, but at this moment I want to show you the power of Live Paint in this step-by-step tutorial.

I really like live paint so far and it gets better results and far easier than using the vectorize tool in freehand.

i am most excited about the fact that you can set the stroke to appear outside/inside/centered on the stroke.

about the stroke-option:
did you ever try another setting than centre?
what happens when you “outline” the stroke, it is outlined as centre, no mather what option you sellected
i’d call this a serious bug

Geert,

Yes, this is a limitation of the Offset path feature. You should still be able to achieve what you want by “Expanding the Appearance” of your art instead of “Outlining” the Strokes. Expand Appearance reduces the art to its more basic representation, and it maintains the visual appearance. So you will get the same outlined paths with the proper offset.

I discovered this feature while designing a webpage the other day. It simplifies a lot of the work and makes it a lot quicker. I realized I oversaw a couple of things that now I know thanks to you.

How have you been doing with the Livetrace feature? I loved Streamline so I am a big fan of this tool. However, it takes time to know the tips and tweaks so you can achieve the best results. What is your opinion?

Thanks again.

@Paulo cesar: I’ve only used the feature to test around a bit but I think it is much better then Streamline, more options etc. LiveTrace gets nice results even from the default settings. I think you will like it.
