A colorful Layer Tennis affair

2008 at 07.49 pm posted by Veerle Pieters

This coming Friday is going to be something special. So what’s up? Well, I got an invite for the popular Layer Tennis game set up by Coudal Partners. I challenged my opponent like in the good old days by throwing my glove before her :)

What's Layer Tennis?

It's a live design event. Originally it was called "Photoshop Tennis" but in this season there have been matches in Adobe Flash and After Effects as well gulp! It's two designers that swap a file back and forth in real-time, adding to and embellishing the work. Each designer gets fifteen minutes to complete a "volley" and then it gets posted to the site. A third participant, a writer, provides play-by-play commentary on the action, as it happens.

A few shots from previous matches

If you want a complete overview of previous matches it's best to visit the Layer Tennis website. But if you're short on time here are a few example volleys of friends of mine that already played.

Kevin Cornell vs Shaun Inman

So who is my opponent?

I'm going to play against my good friend Cindy Li. It's not going to be easy because she's good and has a great sense of humor and best of all has like 8 arms for multitasking :p This is going to be fun! I better get into shape because it's going to be hot (I hope) :D

When?

So it's this Friday, live at 2pm Chicago time or GMT-6. Since I am in Belgium it's 9pm for me. Let's hope clients don't start demanding their design in 15 minutes after this :D

Girl fight! :P Meow!

Those are all awesome designs. I had never heard of this event before. It looks fun and exciting.

Good luck with your matchup, is there any gambling involved in this game? haha.

This is probably going to be the best Layer Tennis event yet. Let’s hope you girls can keep it within that fifteen-minute time limit. It’s been tough for others in the past!

Just like in the good old pastels-and-paper days. I had no idea about that site, thanks for the info and good luck with the contest!

I’ll be watching! :)

Very interesting concept. I love tennis (the actual game), so after reading the title, I got so excited. I thought I was going to read something like “Justine Henin invited me to play against her”.

But this sounds so much fun. I will put a reminder for this event on my calendar and hopefully watch it live on Friday.

Awesome, Veerle! I love Layer Tennis (I especially enjoyed the Marian Bantjes vs. Armin Vit match), and no matter who wins this one, you both win (and so do we!).

Also, even though you’re surely busy, I hope you do another cool screencast soon—maybe something about CSS for code dummies like myself.

Good luck!

I didn’t know this was still arround. They are doing this for years now.

Very cool to hear from Photoshop tennis again :).

I did a match with 2 of my friends a few years back (not on the official Layer Tennis website). I still have the matches online: www.webcontest.nl

This is my first time commenting on your blog, but I have been an avid reader. I just wanted to say good luck at Layer Tennis, it sounds very interesting. I wish I could have the honor of watching.  Keep up the great posts and designs.

I was wondering when the owner of one of the most popular design blogs on the internet would get invited to this wacky , fun and most of all, creative competition. Good luck Veerle!*
