Recently my mailbox seems to contain a few messages of people mailing me about Flash. Many readers will likely assume that I have a natural distaste for anything Flash related. It’s not because I prefer HTML/CSS that I don’t like it or hate it as some people do. Flash/Flex have their place. With that out of the way let’s continue…

I receive a lot of e-mail per day and some of them are from people who want my help on CSS or if I know why certain things don’t work or show up in IE 6 or 7 etc. If I could help fix their problem? In a lot of cases I need to e-mail back that the code they’re using is full of errors and that they’re using old school techniques (tables for layout), inline styling etc. So the first tip here is, learn about Web Standards and learn about coding with CSS for layout. There are a lot of good books out there to learn this from the start. This is the basis of good web design.

It’s been a few years now since I decided to throw all the old school methods out the door and commit myself in supporting Web Standards in every single website project. Today is “Blue Beanie Day”, in honor of Jeffrey Zeldman’s photo on the cover of his book, ”Designing with Web Standards”.

One of the reasons I was attracted to CSSEdit was its gorgeous interface. Jan Van Boghout isn’t only a talented developer but a great designer as well. I’m sure many people don’t realize, but Jan designs every element himself. Just look at MacRabbit’s new website, the icons etc. and I think you’ll agree it’s topnotch. High time we sat down with Jan to ask him a few questions about this new release…

Belgium isn’t exactly the Mecca for great software development but since a few years I’ve been a fan of MacRabbit’s CSSEdit, a pretty cool app for visual editing CSS, designed and developed by Jan Van Boghout. Almost 2 weeks ago version 2.0 was released and I had the pleasure of beta testing this little gem the last few months.

I’m just starting to settle in in our new place and the next exciting adventure already comes knocking at my doorstep. One of the countries that has always been on my to-go list is Canada, the world’s second biggest country with its 24 thousand kilometers coastline. Its great nature is one of the reasons I want to visit it. Now I have another, it’s called ”Web directions North”.

A few days ago I learned about Joe Clark’s ambitious plans. Joe is an accessibility expert from Canada and his idea is a big one! Joe would like to write a standard for captioning and dubbing, develop training courses for those and last but not least design and create new fonts specifically for captioning. It’s called the “Open & Closed Project”

Roger published an interesting discussion on “Light text on dark background vs. readability” . I think that most accessibility/usability experts have no clue how hard life of a designer really is. We constantly have to battle in our mind coming up with something creative and if not we fail in our profession and will likely not convince any clients. The thing is, where do you draw the line? It is about making the right choices and that’s what I did when I designed this site. I know that some things fail on this site with the color analyzer but they only contain 1 or 2 lines of text tops. My main concern was the article section and I made sure these were within the recommend guidelines. Because that’s were you are likely to stay the longest.

Oh man! Never let me design something again for somebody who’s into accessibility, those guys are a major pain in the ass… JUST KIDDING!! :o) Maybe there is a little bit of truth in the fact that it is more difficult to design something really nice and take as good as all accessibility factors into account. So it was quite a challenge because I also had restrictions in what I could change and what I could not…

Just got back from Paris today. After @media London, we decided to travel a bit and go to Paris with Dave. It was an honor to speak on @media about design with 2 of my favorite colleague designers Jon Hicks and Cameron Moll.
