OmniWeb 5 Public Beta

0 comments 2004 at 01.22 pm posted by Veerle

Safari 1.2 isn’t the only browser out today, the Omni Group has released the first public beta of OmniWeb 5.0. This browser was shown at MacWorld In January and can now be tested by Mac users. I haven’t tested it long enough for a serious review but I can definitely say that this browser has serious potential to be one of the best software releases of 2004. I viewed my blog in it and it has the same bug as safari a while ago. The part that fits on the screen is ok but as soon as you scroll the background is gone.

Safari 1.2 is out

When I run software update on Panther this morning I saw that Safari 1.2 is out (7,7MB). Safari 1.2 improves compatibility with websites and web applications by providing increased support for standards (yeah!), adds support for personal certificate authentication, and works with Java 1.4.2 to enable websites that rely on LiveConnect for communication between JavaScript and Java applets.

This update also provides improved application stability, full keyboard access for navigating web pages (when you press option-tab, Safari cycles through links on a page, highlighting them in a manner similar to Internet Explorer), and the ability to resume interrupted downloads. So guys and girls go run Software update if you’re on Mac that is ;-)

Update: This Safari is only available if you have Panther (10.3). Users of 10.2 still have to use Safari 1.0. Apple, don’t forget about those users!

How to make a 2 leveled navigation in css

14 comments 2004 at 03.22 am posted by Veerle

I’ve found the solution on my 2 leveled navigation. Many thanks to Jack Burman for pointing me in the right direction to fix the problem of the gab. I replaced the "float:left" with "position:absolute" (top: 22px) for #smenu1, #smenu2, #smenu3 and #smenu4 together with a left offset of 0px for each iteration.

Maybe there is hope, Internet Explorer team wants our input…

I just came across a very interesting read for us web developers (everybody else also) in a blog from a Microsoft employee (Robert Scoble). This guy is some kind of spokes person for the development team of Internet Explorer.

For those who aren’t familar with the term Usenet, Usenet is the Internet’s oldest message board where archives date back to 1981! It contains tens of thousands of groups of every imaginable topic and everybody sees what everybody else posts.

The IE Factor, a day in the life of a webdesigner

2 comments 2004 at 01.22 pm posted by Veerle

It seems that Internet Explorer is a hot topic in the CSS designers community right now. If you make websites for a living then you probably know what I am talking about, but for those who have no clue maybe this will shed some light. The typical process of developing a website starts in Photoshop and so far no clouds are to been seen. When the client approves the look it’s off to DreamWeaver and BBEdit.

Why follow W3C standards?

My post from yesterday about my blog following W3C standards is still warm and maybe you’re asking yourself this question ”why”? Well here’s why: One of the biggest national newspapers ”Het Laaste Nieuws” recently redesigned its website and look what happens if you’re using a web browser like Safari or Mozilla etc, In other words browsers who promote standards.

My Coke Music

Coca-Cola has heralded http://www.mycokemusic.com as ”the first consumer branded, legitimate downloadable music site”, but for most of yesterday the website - aimed at British internet users - was offline, causing red faces at Coke and probably some laughs at Pepsi headquarters.

World’s Tallest Virtual Building

To remain in the nice pixel-look (ref. yesterday’s post), I found this interesting website… By downloading the template people were able to build their own virtual apartment. Since the apartment has reached its limits of 1000 meters height and 331 residents you’re now unable to add another apartment. Still I really wanted to share this with you, since this is really a cool idea :-)

This is 1 of the many wacko apartments:

The Reality of Bugs

Next time you come across a bug in a web browser and are thinking “is this still not fixed?” then you might read further to see the reason behind the slow pace that bugs are being squished… You will hear Dave Hyatt talk about the reality of bugs. Dave is the creator of Chimera and many parts of Mozilla. He was an employee at Netscape/AOL until Apple offered him a job.
