Design seem to be a hot issue these days…

4 comments 2004 at 12.16 pm posted by Veerle Pieters

There is a lot of discussion going on lately about the importance of design in weblogs and also in how far we are considered as designers within the function of a web designer. How important is the design part of a web project? Are we just some small part of the entire process? Is design just something we can ignore in a weblog? That's what Microsoft engineer Robert Scoble is saying:

"Forget making it pretty. If you try to make it pretty we'll just read it in our RSS News Aggregator which doesn't pass along design info anyway."

This got me thinking beyond weblogs.

How to get validated when using Flash

14 comments 2004 at 01.23 am posted by Veerle Pieters

stars It took you countless hours of research, blood, sweet and sometimes even tears when looking for a solution to build a standard website that validates and looks good in every modern browser. So now you want to add a little Flash movie as icing on the cake. Most people will use the code that Macromedia generates for this.

At first everything looks fine in your browser, that’s until you go back to the W3C to see if it validates. What follows is pure frustration grrrl… Your hard work down the drain because it no longer validates anymore because of Flash.  Look at this ‘bad’ example to see what I mean. Click on the link at the bottom to check the validation and see the long list of errors.

Colors Part II - The Color calculator

12 comments 2004 at 02.25 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Last week we talked about colors and its relation to design. A lot of helpful tools were posted in the comments but today I came across another one, it’s an interactive color calculator that lets you play with complementary colors. It can even translate your colors into CMYK which can be handy if you also need the colors for print.

iCapture a handy tool for PC developers

Today’s post is especially for my PC friends who don’t have access to a Mac when developing a website. So no more excuses ;-) A cool showcase of programming skills done by Daniel Vine. With iCapture you can take a screen dump of your website as you would view it with Safari 1.2 under MacOS X. I’ve tried it and it works great. Ideal for cross browser testing. Within 30 sec you have your screen dump as long as the queue is empty. The screen dump is saved for 24 hours in the PNG format. The real deal is of course much better, but this way you get an idea if your page looks right. iCapture is quickly approaching 24,000 uses and hopefully a few more after my post here ;-)

Yeti and Penguin game… The sequel

1 comments 2004 at 12.03 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Always hard to get back to work on Monday isn’t it? More difficult then the first game, you got to have better hand-eye coordination. No smacking with a bat this time but some darts instead.  You have several penguins on the island to throw at the dartboard, you do it by throwing a snowball at the jumping penguin. Again a cool concept. At the time of posting, my best score was 402 ;-) Time to play the game

Are you in the market for a new cms tool?

Tired of movable type because of its limits? Then you’re in luck because pMachine just released a next-generation publishing system. Over more then a year in the making and built with the idea to be the most flexible, modular, and scalable web publishing system on the planet. The newborn’s name is ExpressionEngine. I am currently checking out this tool because it sounds so diverse and powerful. With its support for data modeling, web services, work-flow, dynamic data caching, nested category trees, and much more, ExpressionEngine gives you the firepower to create a weblog with zero compromises.

Firefox 0.8, for Mac and Windows

Mozilla.org has released Firefox 0.8 (formerly Firebird), the latest version of its lightweight Web browser for Mac OS X and Windows. I am greatly surprised about the quality work that has gone into this release. For instance the first thing you’ll notice is the cool new logo for the app.

What’s your idea on Flash websites?

12 comments 2004 at 02.53 am posted by Veerle Pieters

I don’t know about you but I kind of have a mixed feeling about Flash. I think Flash is really great, you can do awesome things with it and from a creative point of view you got the feeling that the sky is the limit. I would never doubt to use Flash for the creation of business presentations or other interactive projects like games or even CD-ROMs. But in fact Flash’s main purpose is web development. In fact Flash has evolved to a standalone web tool and is perfect for Rich Internet Applications.

Extended 2 leveled horizontal navigation in css

11 comments 2004 at 02.16 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Since the success of the post about my 2 leveled navigation a few days ago, I decided to post the final version of this. I needed to create this for a project I’m working on and the version I use now is more extended. My previous version used a fixed width which was the same for each button. This makes it unusable if the title of your buttons vary a lot in length.

Hit the Penguin

3 comments 2004 at 02.19 am posted by Veerle Pieters

At the beginning of 2004 I made a post of our penguin game, but when I took a closer look at penguin games I stumbled on another great addictive game. Too bad because the link to the game was gone the next day so I couldn’t make of post of it.  But now thanks to our member Johan Sahlön his weblog we’re back in business and I can share this great piece of work with my readers ;-)

The gameplay is pretty simple: You are a Yeti and have to hit the penguin and get it to fly as far as possible. Here is a screen dump of my record so far. What’s yours?
Go play it and have some fun ;-)
