Flickr badge W3C valid

43 comments 2006 at 07.00 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Some of you might be interested in how the Flickr pictures are implemented on my blog. I use the HTML version of the Flickr badge. After completing the 5 steps you’ll get the code that you’ll need to implement in your site. As we like to keep things clean and W3C valid, we need to do some ‘house cleaning’ first. The styles that Flickr provide are of no use to me so I throw them out and we’ll control everything in our own (external) stylesheet…

SXSW first days report

14 comments 2006 at 12.10 am posted by Veerle Pieters

It’s weekend here in Austin and today is the first official day of SXSW. I’m finally starting to adjust to the time deference with Belgium. Our trip over here was so exhausting. We started with a 9 hour flight to Chicago followed by a 3 hour flight to Austin. To be honest I was kinda forgotten how hard it is. Times have definitely changed since my last trip to the US. I can’t remember exactly how many security points we have past but a lot, including one where you need to take your shoes off, laptop out of the bag etc. Understandable but still after being stuck on a plain for 9 hours a friendly talk or gesture could do wonders ;) Our trip was like 24 hours in total and we literary crashed at the hotel and went to bed at 9pm. At 3am we all woke up and after that we counted the hours on the clock ;)

I am working on a redesign for for several touristic regio sites here in Belgium. If you think of vacation, you want to see pictures and when I start designing stuff, I want my files to be as big as possible to have all my options open. That’s when e-mailing large files comes into play. You know, we have an Xserve and an FTP account for clients but not all of them are happy or technology minded to use it. You probably have been there too, some of them would even mail 100MB if it would be possible :o)

Microsoft tweaks IE to shield itself from liability

Remember the Eolas patent an ongoing court struggle between Microsoft and the University of California? After two years Microsoft is now changing the way Internet Explorer handles ActiveX controls like for example the Flash plugin and Java applets. In 2003 the changes proposed were pretty disruptive since you needed to click an OK on a alert window every time a flash movie was loading.

Veerle on mcville

Since the topic of my last post was all about peeking, you might as well get a kick out of my interview on mcville. Just to lift a corner of the veil, you’ll get a glimpse in my daily routine, my favorite food, etc. Marko’s questions were fun to answer. Hope you enjoy the reading…. and still like me afterwards :-p

Oh, and while you are there check out the other interviews. Some are fun reading.

AFUP 05 - PHP stronger than ever

Hi there, Kenneth here, Veerle’s regular PHP developer (she even called me a php guru once, though that’s overstated).  I just came back from AFUP‘s Forum PHP ‘05, the fourth edition of a yearly gathering of advanced PHP programmers in Paris. And boy was it interesting. Two days simply packed with great advice, demos and an insight in the future of PHP. (see the overview of all sessions here)

JavaScript and DOM compatibility

3 comments 2005 at 03.13 am posted by Veerle Pieters

JavaScript has long been a second class citizen on Mac but thanks to the arrival of Mac OS X a lot has changed. It seems that the use of advanced JavaScript techniques on the web have been reborn thanks to web apps like 37 Signals Backpack for example.

I’m not a fan of using buzz words but hey we are talking about Web 2.0, AJAX or DHTML here ;-) It seems like ages ago but in 1997 I’ve won a Macromedia DHTML award for our company site Woohoo! ;-) But let’s get serious now and talk about the great work the web team at Apple is doing in making Safari a top notch browser. So what about JavaScript and DOM compatibility in WebKit?

Design in-Flight is back

My article in Design in FlightThe well respected digital magazine Design in Flight was cancelled a few weeks ago but now it is back in an online edition. With contributors like Eric Meyer, Jason Santa Maria, Jon Hicks, Mark Boulton, Keith Robinson, Molly Holzschlag, Eris Free and others this is one magazine that should end up in your bookmarks.

Back in April I have written an article about Color Theory: Choosing color combinations that you now can read online for free. So if you ever wondered about the wonderful world of colors maybe it is something for you. Give Design in Flight a try I think you’ll love it. Good luck Andy with your online adventure!

In the past we already talked about the fact that the decoration of your office has a crucial part in creating the right kind of atmosphere for inspiration.
