As promised in Monday’s post, here is an exclusive premiere for the readers of Veerle’s blog :-) Our new corporate look has been ready for a few months but the reason why we hold off official usage is because our website isn’t ready just yet. It is al little silly to use new business cards if your website still represents the former look.

Some designers see themselves as artists but that’s something that I never pretend to be. Art in general is something that fascinates me, although I must say not in a way that it takes a special place in my life nor in my professional life. So I’m not a frequent museum guest. But art and I had a brief encounter years ago. In 1996 I was asked to design the layout of a book for Paul Rouge, a Belgian surrealist artist.

Maybe you remember my Illustrator tutorial about freshening up bad source material that I did a while ago. It’s my pleasure to show you the final result because the website went live a few days ago. The project is for patients who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis and want to find out more about the disease and its treatment.
It’s a site that contains a lot of text (in Dutch) but with the power of CSS we tried to make it as engaging as possible. A few examples of graphics that had an overhaul are found here and here. In this project we had accessibility on our mind most of the time and I think the end result isn’t that bad. There is always room for improvement but this is our best effort yet.

The past few weeks I have been finalizing a website project about MS (Multiple Sclerosis). Along the way I received drawings from the client that looked like scanned pictures from a fax… or something along those lines.

A few months ago my first Expression Engine project* was born (update: at this moment the site is not available anymore). Looking back at it I can tell this was another challenge for me. This was actually the first dynamic business website I’ve built entirely by myself.

Now that we are in the vein, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to give you the entire picture of the design part of this project. I know that most of you come to visit my blog to learn more about design. And from what I can hear in the comments of my previous article, it’s a good idea to tell you how things went in the design stage.

Which is your favorite font? I was wondering this this morning while I passed by Design by Fire (by Andrei Herasimchuk). Andrei wrote an article about Trebuchet and the fact that he hates it. Sure it’s all a matter of personal taste but some of them are better suited for readability. Personally I like the font, I use it a lot in Word. I find it a nicer more trendy font then Arial and Verdana. Especially Arial is so basic and lacks any personality.

Finally I got my new blog online. It took a bit more time then I thought because of all the self-study that I needed to do to get things going. No more hassles with iBlog and it will render much faster too. I’ve used the newest techniques like XHTML 1 and CSS2 to achieve a “cleaner” result ;-)
This site follows the W3C guidelines and I’m very proud of it. It took some sweat and tears but it was all for a good cause since one of my promises to myself is that I’m going to use the CSS techniques I’ve learned as much as I can when building sites for clients. It will be my (small) contribution to a standard compliant web!
Don’t hesitate to become a member on my blog because members will get some benefits in the future ;-)
