Geert and I worked very hard and are very proud to finally announce the launch of the new Duoh! website — our business site. It took us a lot of time to finish it due to the heavy workload of the past couple of months, and the fact that any spare time I could find during the weekends was always spent on writing articles for the blog. Actually, much of the design itself was already finished in November 2007! That was right after I wrote about designs that didn’t make it. From then on, our minds were made up and we both felt that this is what we wanted.

Today we are going to talk a little about a recent logo design I did but first a little background info. On June 25th Maxine Sherrin, one of the founders of Web Directions, asked me if I would be interested in designing the first magazine for their web conferences. I was thrilled by this invite and also honored they asked me. The tought alone, to design a magazine for print for a client on the other side of the world sounded very exotic and challenging. Since I know both John and Maxine pretty well I didn’t need extra time to think about it. My answer was yes of course…

For me it’s usually a bit of fun to talk about a successful finished project. Every design project is a challenge, because it’s always different. Whether it’s a logo design or website design, to me, working on my own projects is the most difficult thing. That’s probably the case for every graphic designer. Because people have mailed me about when the new Duoh.com would be online, I thought I’ll share some of the designs that didn’t make it and explain my thinking process and why I rejected them.

It doesn’t happen that often that we receive an unusual project request. You know, *that* project that makes your eyebrows raise and where you need some time to think about it before agreeing to it. That’s exactly what happened to us a few months ago…

People are e-mailing me with all kinds of questions. One of the recurring questions is about how I started my own business and if I could spare a few tips. In this article I’ll share my experience and what I’ve learned together with some tips and advice. Hopefully this will give people who are about to start freelancing some guidance in this big step.

Today it’s time to share my experience on a fun project I’ve been working on. I’m talking about the illustration theme I’ve created for a Flex-based web application called Scrapblog. For those who don’t know Scrapblog yet, it’s a way to create multimedia scrapbooks of your photos, videos, audio and text. Ideal for people who want to share photos and videos with family and friends in a fun way. It’s really cool to play with, so check it out!

Running your own business brings a lot of responsibilities, with money as the first one that comes to mind. Of course we have a great bookkeeper who handles the law, and all the work towards VAT, taxes etc. But before invoices reach his desk, several steps have been dealt with to get to that stage.

Most of the ‘Web 2.0’ sites that have changed people methods in enjoying the web are coming from the United States. Nothing wrong with that of course, but it makes it kinda easy to forget about things closer to home in let’s say Paris. I’m talking about Netvibes, a service to help you consume and customize the huge amount of information we process in a typical day.

When we created the previous Duoh! logo, our main goal was to build a more serious approach. I believe it fits its purpose, but we now feel it’s time to move on and rethink our corporate image. Let me share my thinking process with you…

Let’s talk about food, shall we? ;) One of the projects I have been working on a while ago is a website design for a company from Toronto, Canada called Just Add Heat. The logo and colors were already in place so our job was to to create a few website templates. This brings the perfect opportunity to share some basic CSS information on how the main template is set up.
