Memories - Part II

Kenneth with his 12 inch PowerBook and me with with my 17 inchSaturday I had a meeting with Kenneth our PHP wizard. As we were discussing projects a thought that invaded my mind was the funny Apple commercial when they introduced the 17” and 12” PowerBook.  And so we decided to make this picture. I guess this says it all… except that I’m “rather” small compared to Kenneth instead of very small as in the commercial.

Kenneth told me that he would have lost his sanity if I didn’t introduce the Mac to him. It made his life so much easier, certainly Mac OS X because it’s all Unix based now. So this prooves that the programmer geeks love it too ;-)

Speaking of geeky, here is a nice tool that executes PHP while writing it. It can do much more such as trying out CSS, creating a whole website etc. It’s called HyperEdit. This brings me to the question of some friends asking me if I know of a place where you can find some old and new commercials from Apple. So here is an archive

2 of my favorites:

Hope you like what you see ;-)

PowerBook G5 still a year away so…

New toys at the office today! Not so long ago I wrote about Apple’s latest PowerBooks and that I will skip this update and hold out for a PowerBook G5. Well now I changed my mind and bought a new 17” PowerBook G4. The G5 is still probably a year away. We got a very good price from our Apple dealer and 14 days ago it was ordered.

It was a build to order machine since I requested a faster HD and an extra 512MB Ram. So to keep it short and sweet today all the toys arrived at the office. So now we’re also equipped to do some video conferencing :-)

So the only thing still not arrived is our Xserve G5. Apparently Apple has some delivery problems with the optional Xraid card. We need such a card for Raid 5. Xserve even duals are already arriving in quantities according to Macline.

It’s always a joy to unwrap and look at the attention to detail with new Apple products. Boy would I love to design the packaging for these products, not only would I know what’s coming but also make money ;-)

You can see a short unwrapping story of the 17” PowerBook here.

Traffic usage monitor

Does anybody knows a good tool to monitor your download and upload usage. It has to look good so that it won’t annoy me when sitting on my desktop. I know I am demanding :-) I also don’t need those geeky options, just a clean and simple interface to quickly get an idea of what is used. It has to run on Windows XP. Examples for MacOS X are also welcome ;-) Thanks in advance.

SETI@home desktop icon

3 comments 2004 at 11.54 pm posted by Veerle

Way back on my Quadra 700 I use to have an After Dark Star Trek screensaver that I liked a lot. I heard Spock saying "Scotty get us out of here"... etc. Today I'm still in space when my screen gets dark, except I now run a bit more useful screensaver, I render SETI@home packages.

The only thing I don't like about SETI is the ugly application icon. I've always had something with icons, I love them. You should see my Pixadex library, it's quite a collection. But I also love creating icons for user interfaces etc. So when I thought about creating my first desktop icon, I didn't have to think twice... SETI@home would be my first challenge. As you can see I didn't forget my Windows readers as well, this time it's fun for everyone! ! ;-)

It's also my way of saying thank you to all my readers.

Another milestone

Yesterday was another milestone for my blog. When I started all this with iBlog there were around 10 people who visited my site. When I redesigned the whole thing I got listed on the CSS vault and since then I have around 300 people who visit my blog each day.

Maintenance at Level3

2 comments 2004 at 11.31 am posted by Veerle

Just a short post to let you know that our server will be down for a few minutes (depending on how smooth everything goes) due to a 10 seconds power loss at Level3. I don’t know exactly when this will happen but our server admin is on site to keep downtime to a minimum. Sorry for the inconvenience :-(

Listed at the CSSVault

Server statsI would like to thank Paul Scrivens of the community resource CSSVault for listing my site. This site was actually my first attempt to get serious about CSS and this listing is a great reward and motivator to go further in that direction. Also many thanks to all the people who have mailed me and said beautiful things.
You’ve made my day ;-)

A direct result of all this is that our server gets a lot more traffic then before and I hope that people will find this blog interesting enough to come back to once in a while. Yesterday my blog received almost 400 people and today were at almost 300. Amazing!

New blog update…

0 comments 2003 at 03.05 am posted by Veerle

Sorry to keep you waiting so long, but this takes more time then I thought and the problem is that it is SOooo hectic at the moment that I don’t find enough time to work on this at full speed. I’m currently experimenting with PHP scripting, to link my design to the content management system. This is new territory for me and this is of course another reason why it’s taking so long. Hopefully you’ll all be a bit extra patient with me. Thanks! :-)

New design for blog is coming soon…

1 comments 2003 at 04.57 am posted by Veerle

I’m currently working on a new design for my blog. I decided I want something more “professional” then iBlog for my blog. A few days ago I did an update and it messed up the whole blog :-( It got me frustrated and I’m unable to fix it. I’m typing this post in BBEdit btw :-S

My new blog will be better and more professional since it will work with PHP. The layout will be entirely made with advanced CSS styles. This blog will be some kind of case-study for me. My pages will have no table tags (except the calendar) in the code and will be built on CSS styles only. It will be much lighter in size too (no heavy backgrounds or graphics etc.).

Veerle’s blog gets a “visitors-boost”

When I looked at my visitors stats this morning the numbers were going through the roof ;-)… at least for a simple blog like mine. So I did a bit of “Sherlocking” and the unbelievable has happened…

MacSurferMacSurfer has added a link to my blog today! :-) They were referring to my ShapeShifter story of yesterday. I’m wondering how many visitors a page like MacSurfer gets daily. If only a few of them reach my blog I’m a happy camper ;-)

And it’s nice to see all those Mac fellows arriving on my pages! I hope that they like what they see and that they will keep popping in once in a while. This keeps me motivated to find some interesting stories to tell.
