Any travel destinations for me?

54 comments 2005 at 03.46 am posted by Veerle Pieters

After writing about Peking-Express it got me thinking about our Summer vacation. This year we're going to give Ibiza a miss. So far I have no clue where I want to go. So that's when I thought maybe I'll post about it and who knows maybe some reader comes up with a gorgeous destination that I didn't know off. Only a few requirements comes to mind such as:

  • It has to be in Europe (3-4 hour flight from Belgium)
  • Almost a certainty that the sun will join the party
  • Nice surroundings, enough to take a road trip
  • It doesn't matter if there isn't any night life

Looking forward to hearing about your vacation stories. It's even nice to daydream about it in this dawn cold weather that we're having right now ;-)

PHP developer wanted

19 comments 2005 at 04.02 am posted by Veerle Pieters

We’re always busy here at Duoh! and sometimes our workload becomes too heavy for our current PHP developer. To make life a little less stress free we are looking for some extra help from the crème de la crème in the programming community. So if you’re interested in doing some freelance work for Duoh! send an email to veerle AT duoh.com with your resume, your rate etc.

Talking about planning, meeting deadlines etc.

One of the daily things in my working routine is carefully planning projects. Planning is important, just to avoid unpleasant surprises, not only for yourself but also for the client. Mostly my week starts off pretty doable. A week is nicely filled with work but I always try to make sure there are some free gaps left. From experience I know that they will always get filled anyway.

Attended my first Geek dinner

Yesterday in Ghent I attended my first geek dinner whoha! Always a bit of a surprise such a thing since you actually don’t know anybody there (at least not in person). The idea of the geek dinner was started by Erwin van Hunen and Cindy De Smet. It’s safe to say that it was a success.

My best intentions for the new year

  • from a business perspective : getting the new Duoh! website online asap

  • from my “free time” perspective : giving my blog a face lift ... and I don’t only mean design-wise here ;-)

  • personally : give a donation to the people in Asia who need every help they can get. Geert and myself donated 137 Euros which is the amount that Unicef needs to install a water pomp to supply a whole community of drink water. I think it’s the least we can do. This all made me realize even more how good we have it here. So I plan to enjoy life a bit more and value the good things.

If you have a blog that contains publicity, maybe this is a good starting point. A nice initiative from Andy Budd is BlogAid

2004, my personal highlights

Looking back on 2004 I realize that it has been a hell of a year. Since a lot of people in the blogosphere are making up their ‘list’ I thought I can do this as well.

Survey - What would you like to read…

39 comments 2004 at 12.58 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Not that I suffer from a writers’ block… But just curious and wondering, if you could choose which article I should write, what would it be? Well… except for a CSS tutorial, because I know about 80% will ask me to. And maybe I will some day since I’ve learned a lot myself from it.

Apart from another CSS tutorial what would you like to read here? Just let me know, try to be as specific as possible. This way I know the course I’m currently sailing is the right one. Not always easy to find the right balance to give my readers the stuff they like. Just wondering if the direction I going for lately is good. It’s been more and more about design and less CSS. You would help me a great deal and you will do yourself a favor, so go ahead and make us both pleased ;-) Thanks!

Tiësto in Concert report

7 comments 2004 at 06.35 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Boy did the time fly this weekend (especially if you’re sleeping most of the time). The need for some shut-eye was due to Tiësto in Concert last Saturday at the Ethias Arena in Hasselt.  I’ve been looking forward to this concert for quite some time and expectations were high due to last year’s concert in Arnhem. That gig and its vibe was pretty hard to beat. After driving for 1,5 hour we arrived at the Ethias Arena around 10pm.

4x4 Adventure in the Flemish Ardennes

Since I began our visual journey of Belgium you’ve seen Knokke and Ghent. Time to move on to other nice places in my country. Yesterday our Toyota dealer (De Prins, Machelen Zulte) set up up a 4x4 event that explores the Flemish Ardennes. 60 Toyota jeeps joined the adventure. Our RAV 4 took us to gorgeous places that are otherwise off-limits. Not that we destroyed nature or so, all off road trips were on paths that are being used by farmers to reach their fields. My responsibilities as a co-pilot were to give directions from the road book. A challenge for me since I sometimes have trouble with left and right (I’m both left and right handed) :-) Between stages there where tests like driving on a course blindfolded.

My NetNewsWire icon

19 comments 2004 at 03.27 am posted by Veerle Pieters

I haven’t tried the new beta version of NetNewsWire 2.0b3 yet, but I’ve taken a look and one thing is for sure I don’t like the icon. Especially the hard black border around the satellite and the globe is rather disturbing to me. I’m more a sucker for the smooth or liquid style. So I fired up Illustrator CS and redrew the globe and satellite in my own style.
