What has been happening in the world of digital music lately?

Time for getting you up to speed concerning the digital music revolution. It seems that the iPod, iTunes and Digital Rights Management (DRM) are hot topics at NAB.

Let’s start with the sad news. Yes more delays for the European iTunes music store. Apple Europe vice president Pascal Cagni warned this week that the launch of the iTunes Music Store in Europe may be delayed for “a few months”, while the company works to ensure that the service will be “perfect”. He cited Europe’s sometimes-conflicting music-business bureaucracy and its recalcitrance in arranging digital music licenses as cause of the delay.

Belgium is well-known for techno in the rest of the world but since last year we have upcoming talents Junior Jack and Kid Créme to change all that. Both DJ’s played in El Divino last summer (Ibiza) for Defected records. Junior Jacks real name is Vito Lucente and as you may have guessed has Italian roots but is living in Brussels since he was a teenager.

50 million songs and still going strong…

Last week there was much talk about Virgin also launching its own music service and some of the journalists seem to think that Apple has to worry about Richard Branson.

I have serious doubts about that. The company is called Virgin Digital, and is developing its own digital jukebox and online music store with music delivery company MusicNet that will be available by the end of August, the companies said Sunday. Some years ago Richard Brawson also launched his own Coke and thought it would beat Coca Cola from the first spot but as we all know that didn’t happen either.

A Virtual iPod

Apple’s mini iPod isn’t available yet here in Europe (in April) but in the States the little toy is an instant smash hit. When Apple announced the devices were shipping in February, the company said they already had 100,000 iPods on pre-order and now retailers are having trouble keeping the devices in stock.

CD’s or Vinyl?

Most people don’t listen to vinyl records anymore. But maybe you didn’t know that they are still out there, mostly as 12” for DJ’s to mix at parties. I remember when the CD came out people said that vinyl will die a quick death, but now many years later it’s still alive. Probably the most famous vinyl player of all times is the Technics 1200. All well-known DJ’s prefer this turntable. I still think that vinyl sounds a lot better then CD’s, it has a richer/warmer sound in my opinion.

iTunes Music Store Europe facing more delays?

7 comments 2004 at 01.52 am posted by Veerle

According to the rumor mill Apple is still facing some heavy red tape in bringing the Music Store over to Europe. The original target was to get it in place in the first half of 2004. The European Union wants us to believe that Europe is one unity but this proves them more then wrong. So what’s the hold up? Well, Apple wants a European-wide deal to provide a consistent and uniform Music Store. However, regional licensing fees and distribution of those fees remain to be an obstacle. In other words everybody wants to fill their pockets and nobody sees the greater good.

iTunes

In the mean time they’re still losing money. A few months ago Apple past the 30 Million mark in the US alone, so are those decision makers really that blind? It should be clear that regional stores are not the answer here. A lot of songs in the US store are interesting for me, like all those great songs from the 80’s. I love the 80’s btw. A direct result of all this is that the launch-goal may fall as far back as August 2004… but this remains a moving target. I am ready to buy and I think a lot of others too but this is becoming a joke isn’t it?

How low can you go?

D cubeI guess pretty low when looking at this blatant rip-off of Apple's iPod. A company called Nextway has released a MP3 player called D cube NHD-150D.

Dull name isn't it? Hold on THEY implemented 1 feature that the iPod hasn't, an FM radio wow! Pretty sure that somebody at Cupertino will send them a friendly letter. Apple must be the most copied company in history! Shame on you Nextway!

My Coke Music

Coca-Cola has heralded http://www.mycokemusic.com as ”the first consumer branded, legitimate downloadable music site”, but for most of yesterday the website - aimed at British internet users - was offline, causing red faces at Coke and probably some laughs at Pepsi headquarters.

Fred and Victoria Apple’s new dance sensation?

It’s common knowledge that Macs are being used by great music artists such as Moby, Seal, Faithless, BT etc. But now Mac voices used for speech are also becoming musical artists themselves! Here is a true story, ever heard the single “Satisfaction” of Benny Benassi with those Mac voices? Victoria goes single in his new smashing dance tune “Able To Love”...! Do we have 2 Mac celebrities? :-D

Apple introduces the iPod Mini

Today at MacWorld Steve Jobs revealed a little mini iPod. iPod mini lets you bring along enough music for a three-day weekend getaway in a package so small you’ll forget you’re carrying it. It is the world’s smallest 1000 song player. The iPod mini is available in five colors.

Personally I have a bid of mixed reaction on this tiny player, most of that has to do with the price. Still a few months away from being available in Europe I wonder how much difference their will be in price when being compared to the US. If it would cost 240 Euro I would give it some thought. How about you?
