Yeti Sports Part 5 - FLAMINGO DRIVE

3 comments 2004 at 06.07 am posted by Veerle

To keep the tradition alive and mainly because life isn’t all about work, one should have fun too so here’s part 5. The cool thing about these games is that they also run on the newest mobile phones such as Sony Ericsson T610 T630, Z600, P800 and P900. As I get it these are free but you have to download them to your phone. More info about other supported models here. Ideal for those death moments waiting at the airport.

Non-scientific poll : do you give your HD a name?

50 comments 2004 at 07.34 am posted by Veerle

I have this typical habit of giving my HD a personal name, and mostly I give it the code-name of the machine or a name from one of my favorite TV series etc. My new Apple PowerBook 17” is called Hammerhead, its actual code-name. Don’t they all have cool code-names? Take “Dark Star” for instance code-name for an Xserve G5, or the original PowerMac G4 was called Yikes! Here is full list for your inspiration ;-)

Some HD names

These are some of the names we use: Hammerhead, Dark Angel, our Airport Extreme is called SD6 (not that we’re bad...but SD6 is the bad alliance in the stunning TV series Alias), ... We always change its icon too, another habit I guess ;-)

So now I’m wondering if I’m alone in this. And is this only a Mac thing? Please post how yours is called and free me of this bugging curiosity :-D

In just a few weeks we will know more of what’s coming in Apple’s next operating system 10.4 aka “Tiger”. Steve Jobs will reveal everything at this years World Wide Developers Conference 2004 taken place from June 28th till July 2nd in San Francisco. The slogan alone makes me just more curious “Innovation never sleeps. Preview the highly evolved Mac OS X “Tiger”

Memories - Part II

Kenneth with his 12 inch PowerBook and me with with my 17 inchSaturday I had a meeting with Kenneth our PHP wizard. As we were discussing projects a thought that invaded my mind was the funny Apple commercial when they introduced the 17” and 12” PowerBook.  And so we decided to make this picture. I guess this says it all… except that I’m “rather” small compared to Kenneth instead of very small as in the commercial.

Kenneth told me that he would have lost his sanity if I didn’t introduce the Mac to him. It made his life so much easier, certainly Mac OS X because it’s all Unix based now. So this prooves that the programmer geeks love it too ;-)

Speaking of geeky, here is a nice tool that executes PHP while writing it. It can do much more such as trying out CSS, creating a whole website etc. It’s called HyperEdit. This brings me to the question of some friends asking me if I know of a place where you can find some old and new commercials from Apple. So here is an archive

2 of my favorites:

Another archive of Apple commercials:

Hope you like what you see ;-)

Yeti and The Penguin Part 4: Albatross overload

1 comments 2004 at 12.48 am posted by Veerle

Time for al little break as the week is coming to an end. I posted all previous games of Yeti and the Penguin, so without further delay here is part 4 called Albatross Overload.

Especially my Ozi visitors will like the game since it takes place on a Australian beach. As you probably guessed the penguin has yet again a central role but this time you have to aim it so that the penguin flies together with the albatross.

The first click is to shoot the penguin at the right moment and all other clicks are used to flap the wings of the albatross. The secret here is not to click too much but letting the albatross glide so that his wing power gets a boast.

After a few games I was able to collect this score 2862,32 ;-)

Keith told me:

  • 1. Go into your blog's archives.
  • 2. Find your 23rd post (or closest to).
  • 3. Find the fifth sentence (or closest to).
  • 4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions.
  • From Purple frog delights scientists a post on October 28th 2003:

"Scientists have given it the name Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis, from the Sanskrit
word for nose (nasika); batrachus, meaning frog; and Sahyadri, the name for its
    mountain home"

Does it need to be round to roll?

2 comments 2004 at 12.30 am posted by Veerle

The answer is NO it doesn’t!  What is the worse possible geometric shape to make an item roll?  A square. Well guess what, even a bicycle with squared wheels can ride like a charm… that is of course if the road exists of a sequence of jarring bumps. Stan Wagon, a mathematician at McAlester College in St. Paul, Minn., has a bicycle with square wheels that runs smoothly. His secret lays in the shape of the road over which the wheels roll. A square wheel can roll smoothly, keeping the axle moving in a straight line and at a constant velocity, if it travels over evenly spaced bumps of just the right shape.

Square Wheels BikeHowever steering remains a bit difficult. Hold on… switch to fantasy mode with me ... Imagine you are driving with your car and the traditional bicycle lanes now have these weird looking bumps. For safety it wouldn’t be that bad because cars won’t cross it without noticing it.

But then again, if I see all those people riding those weird looking bikes, it could very well be some kind of a scene out of a Monty Python movie. I think it’s safe to say that we won’t see this in a nearby future. Guess this proves that people can do weird things with their free time ;-)

If you like icons like me and are a big fan of the Matrix this is something for you. To celebrate the North American DVD release of Matrix Revolutions, the Iconfactory has released Matrix Rebooted.

Matrix Rebooted

Matrix Rebooted is a wonderful tribute to the movie trilogy from the Wachowski brothers and contains over 90 individual icons that can be used as a complete system replacement set for your desktop. Users of the popular system icon customization utility, CandyBar will be happy to learn that Matrix Rebooted comes complete as a CandyBar iContainer that can replace all of your system icons in a single click. But that’s not all, the set contains alternate versions so CandyBar users can mix and match to their heart’s content.

This icons are available for MacOS X and Windows.

Yeti and Penguin game… Part III

11 comments 2004 at 02.50 am posted by Veerle

It has been a wile since I last posted a game. With the weekend fast approaching the ideal time-killer. Looks like I am starting to specialize in those Yeti games ;-)

Seal Bounce
The first installment was Penguin Throw and was great fun, the second one Orca Slap was not bad but not as much fun as the original. You guessed it, here is part III: Seal Bounce! You have to throw the penguin in the sky and aim it so that with a bit of luck the seals make it fly even higher. Its simplicity and humorous approach make it a hit. In case you’re wondering my best throw was 299.61 and my overall score was 1205.6. Do tell if your hand-eye coordination is any better ;-)

Go play Seal Bounce.
