Using WIFI on location

One of the coolest technologies that I enjoy using is WIFI. It has been out for a while and more and more hotels and public areas have hotspots. But like with any new technology or hype there always people that are trying to make a ridiculous amount of money because it is hot.

Such cruelty doesn’t fit in my (ideal) society!

First let me paint a picture of the thoughts that I had about Canada. I always assumed that Canada was a country that had great respect for its citizens, the environment and its animals. It is one of the countries that I’m planning on visiting in this lifetime just because of the beautiful surroundings.

Aggressive advertising techniques fair?

By surfing some sites lately I’ve noticed that Safari’s pop-up window blocker sometimes fails. So after some closer examination it seems that it is not only Safari who is suffering. Most of the time it’s not pop-up but pop-under windows that get through. The first site where I noticed this behavior was macosrumors.com (they have disabled the perpetrator now). It seems that this is the result of new ad delivery techniques that seek to subvert traditional blocking systems.

Nasty evil thing…

Boy do I hate comment spammers, they make life miserable! :-( Right now my blog is under attack and I loose lots of time in research to find the bastard to block him permanently. He’s using spoofed IP addresses and this makes it extra nasty to find who is doing this. A Google search brought me to the conclusion that I’m not the only one right now who is suffering from the same comment’s spammer.

It took them long enough….

Not so long ago I had a bit of trouble while installing Quark 6 on my new computer. For those that aren’t up to speed you can still read the horror story here. Quark only grant you a license to install it on one machine. So in my case transferring to a new machine was a serious hassle especially with a company that has a track record for lousy customer service.

Efficiency means everything to me

If you are as busy as me you try to save as much time with meetings at a client as possible. Sometimes I find meetings such a waste of time, considering the time you spend in a car. This is mostly longer then the meeting itself. Like today, I had a meeting at 9 a.m. this morning in Leuven. If my GPS is not mistaken, it would take me 55 minutes to get there. Well, since I needed to be there at 9 a.m. I knew this was really impossible to get there on time considering all the traffic jams I have to face around 8 a.m. So I counted 1,5 hour and left around 7.30 a.m.

The world’s most customer friendly company

Well, it sure ain’t Quark if you ask me.  First a little history for those who aren’t familiar with Quark’s practices. When I started my business in 1992, one of the programs I needed was Quark XPress (version 3.1). In those days when you bought XPress, you received temporary diskettes to start with. You could use them for only a few weeks until you received your final ones. So when they arrived you needed to reinstall XPress.

It had to happen sooner or later!

Yesterday I got hit by comment spam for the first time since my blog started in 2003. My guess, that’s the toll to pay when a blog is growing up. Both spammers were from the US (no surprises here) and only one I could trace as a Verizon customer. I’m sure many popular blogs have been down this road before but for me this is new territory. I’ve sent an e-mail to the abuse address from Verizon and blocked both IP addresses.

Trojan Horse for Mac OS X

Yes you read it right! Intego makers of the Intego virus software have released a press release that they have found a Trojan Horse (MP3Virus.Gen) that affects Mac OS X. A Trojan Horse differs from a virus as it is a stand alone program. The Trojan Horse DOES NOTHING BAD but has the potential to delete all of a user’s personal files; send an e-mail message containing a copy of itself to other users; and infect other MP3, JPEG, GIF or QuickTime files.

iTunes Music Store Europe facing more delays?

7 comments 2004 at 01.52 am posted by Veerle Pieters

According to the rumor mill Apple is still facing some heavy red tape in bringing the Music Store over to Europe. The original target was to get it in place in the first half of 2004. The European Union wants us to believe that Europe is one unity but this proves them more then wrong. So what’s the hold up? Well, Apple wants a European-wide deal to provide a consistent and uniform Music Store. However, regional licensing fees and distribution of those fees remain to be an obstacle. In other words everybody wants to fill their pockets and nobody sees the greater good.
iTunes

In the mean time they’re still losing money. A few months ago Apple past the 30 Million mark in the US alone, so are those decision makers really that blind? It should be clear that regional stores are not the answer here. A lot of songs in the US store are interesting for me, like all those great songs from the 80’s. I love the 80’s btw. A direct result of all this is that the launch-goal may fall as far back as August 2004… but this remains a moving target. I am ready to buy and I think a lot of others too but this is becoming a joke isn’t it?
