My view on light text on dark background vs. readability

Roger published an interesting discussion on “Light text on dark background vs. readability” . I think that most accessibility/usability experts have no clue how hard life of a designer really is. We constantly have to battle in our mind coming up with something creative and if not we fail in our profession and will likely not convince any clients. The thing is, where do you draw the line? It is about making the right choices and that’s what I did when I designed this site.  I know that some things fail on this site with the color analyzer but they only contain 1 or 2 lines of text tops. My main concern was the article section and I made sure these were within the recommend guidelines. Because that’s were you are likely to stay the longest.

Creating flexible buttons using Photoshop shapes and styles

23 comments 2006 at 10.12 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Not sure about you, but when I create buttons for a web site, I always use shapes, especially if the button has rounded corners. These vector shapes have the advantage that they are easy to scale or resize. Combine them with effects and you have the most flexible button ever. Not sure what I mean? I hope I can share something useful with you here…

Plastic surgery on 456 Berea Street :D

Oh man! Never let me design something again for somebody who’s into accessibility, those guys are a major pain in the ass… JUST KIDDING!! :o) Maybe there is a little bit of truth in the fact that it is more difficult to design something really nice and take as good as all accessibility factors into account. So it was quite a challenge because I also had restrictions in what I could change and what I could not…

Not sure if this is a cool tip, but this is something I always do when I start on a full bleed design in Photoshop (I mean a design for print, obviously). I thought I share this one with you…

Illustrator Art Brushes

25 comments 2006 at 08.23 am posted by Veerle Pieters

The last couple of days brought me a lot of inspiration, because of the places I’ve visited. No stress, well expect to catch a train at 6.30 a.m. for Paris after 3 hours of sleep coming back from London. In fact, that was a bit crazy. A little too much in a short time (London, Paris and then driving to Normandy Honfleur). And so, I felt the urge sketch and draw this weekend and so I came up with some ideas, like using art brushes on text in Illustrator ...

Just got back from Paris today. After @media London, we decided to travel a bit and go to Paris with Dave. It was an honor to speak on @media about design with 2 of my favorite colleague designers Jon Hicks and Cameron Moll.

Illustration, from sketch to finish Part Three

Some of you remember part 1 and part 2 and have been eager to view part 3. It took me a while to find some free time to work on part 3. Today I have been able to finish my drawing. This part covers the final touch of the illustration. We’ll be adding highlights and shadows and use the Gradient Tool a lot…

Creating Mac OS X looking desktops

40 comments 2006 at 02.02 am posted by Veerle Pieters

On a regular basis I receive requests on how to create those Mac OS X backgrounds, so this weekend I played around in Illustrator trying to create a nice looking desktop using gradient mesh. This all goes well as long as I stick with 1 simple shape, some organic looking bow. As soon as I try to add other bows by adding gradient mesh points things fall apart. Using separate layers each using transparency seems to be the solution, but still this ain’t no walk in the park if you want to achieve the complexity as those real Mac OS X desktops. I congratulate and bow for the designer who made those. I gave up and resorted to Photoshop CS2 and hoped for a better result…

NetSquared project part 1

36 comments 2006 at 06.01 am posted by Veerle Pieters

Regular visitors will know that from time to time I write about some projects that we worked on. So today I like to introduce NetSquared. I was very excited to jump into this project because it was one those occasions that I had the opportunity to create a brand/identity from scratch. This involved creating a logo, stationary, style-guide, brochure and a of course a website. To me personally a first impression in what kind of company you’re dealing with starts by looking at the logo. Maybe that’s because of my job, I don’t know, but that’s where my thinking pattern always starts.
