Dust & Scratch Removal

3 comments 2004 at 03.02 am posted by Veerle

Some scanners have Digital Ice build in to easily remove dust and scratches from your scanned pictures. If you don’t own such a scanner you’re in luck because Polaroid seems to be giving away software for free that works in a similar way. The installer lets you choose between a standalone app or a Photoshop plug-in. It’s for Mac and Windows.

I’m still recovering from the shock after seeing this lovely cruise ship drawn in Adobe Illustrator. Be sure to zoom in on the different segments of the boat.

Expression, a free illustration tool from Microsoft!

An innovative vector-based illustration and graphics tool has just earned its place on my PowerBook 17”. Unbelievable, but Expression 3 is free and it’s from Microsoft! Free?Euh?… Is this a way to make up for all the headaches we have with I.E. issues? ;-)

Font survey and results

1 comments 2004 at 06.36 am posted by Veerle

The following resource can be handy if you want to be sure if a particular font is installed on a PC, Mac or Unix box. It's a survey done on Code Style and the results are updated monthly.

You can see all the results with their percentage and a preview of how they look. Also not too shabby is this font sampler with examples of and previews of Serif fonts, Sans serif fonts, Monospace fonts, Fantasy fonts and Cursive fonts.

Starting from bad, ugly material… a challenge?

6 comments 2004 at 10.33 am posted by Veerle

A while ago I already talked about finding inspiration. An ideal situation is when you receive shoots from a professional photographer and the product is easy to understand and to present itself. Only looking at those pictures can give you the inspiration you need to get started. But what about when you receive no material at all or only a logo or photos that you know won’t fit from the moment you laid your eyes on them. Another example that can limit your inspiration is when the company uses a difficult color pallet. I always have trouble working with colors that don’t really suit me.

Experiment whith shapes in Flash MX It’s time to experiment a little in Flash MX. Maybe you’ve been wondering how certain things work in Flash like producing random shapes for example. Well levitated.net is a site filled with Flash source files. All a bit experimental but still a great resource in my humble opinion. I am sure some of these examples will set the wheels of creativity in motion ;-)

Thoughts on fonts for webpages

5 comments 2004 at 05.32 am posted by Veerle

Which is your favorite font? I was wondering this this morning while I passed by Design by Fire (by Andrei Herasimchuk). Andrei wrote an article about Trebuchet and the fact that he hates it. Sure it’s all a matter of personal taste but some of them are better suited for readability. Personally I like the font, I use it a lot in Word. I find it a nicer more trendy font then Arial and Verdana. Especially Arial is so basic and lacks any personality.

Pixel patterns

Pixel patternsThe background takes an important part of the entire webpage design. Pixel patterns are a trend these days and lots of weblogs use them as a background. I like the sharpness and crispness of it. The complex patterns do fascinate me and I tend to analyze them by making a screenshot and zoom in to see how it's drawn.

Some of them look like old fashion wallpaper, I don't always like these but still, I admire the designer who made this. It's stunning and quit difficult!

Sometimes it can be hard to create an original pixel pattern. And some of you do wonder how to make these. I have found some high quality resources about this matter. There are probably much more websites on pixel patterns, but these 2 are the best ones I've found so far:

2 tools to help you make pixel patterns:

If anybody wants to share other high quality resouces, please don't hesitate.

Icon inspiration

5 comments 2004 at 02.20 am posted by Veerle

Some of my icon designsRo London has collected around 300 icons from 1800 websites. To be clear, the purpose of this site is not to copy the intellectual property of others but to use as a starting point for your own icon inspiration.

Sometimes making these little icons can be tricky and hard because there aren't so many ways to represent an arrow for example. Here are some icons that I made over time.

On a sidenote: Jeffrey Zeldman has a new home. I like the color scheme and prefer this one over the older version. It makes me think about ecology and nature ;-)

While designing, do you think about the next step?

8 comments 2004 at 01.41 am posted by Veerle

When you design an interface/lay-out for a website you start probably just like me by translating your ideas into graphics in Photoshop. But while you are doing this, I wonder if you also keep the next step in mind? Are you constantly thinking on how you’ll convert your design into HTML? And whether it is doable yes or no? Or if you’re not, then when should you think about it?
