The History of Belgian Graphic Design

21 comments 2007 at 04.44 pm posted by Veerle

Something that has been lingering my mind lately is the history of graphic design in Belgium or the lack off. It’s true that I didn’t spend days researching the web, but it’s obvious that something is lacking. There is as good as nothing to be found relating to the subject. It is impossible not to notice the impact of graphic design in everyday life so it’s there alright, but obviously nothing is online. A bit of a shame and a missed opportunity if you ask me.

What is Graphic Design?

It seems to be embedded in human nature to try to label things to identify it. Labeling itself is not bad, but I’m talking about making things sound more fancy or smart. It’s already hard enough to get everybody on the same line when using well known terms. It’s all subjective and everybody has a different vision or interpretation.

Illustrator Pen tool exercises

People really seem to like my Illustrator tutorials, but I do receive a lot of e-mail with one common question ”How did you create those curvy lines used in motion trails?” The first thing that you need to master and become proficient in is the Pen tool.

Deadlines sometimes affect inspiration

It seems that my deadlines article has sparked an interesting discussion. One of them being an article entitled ”The Tao of Deadlines” by Andy Rutledge. To be honest I had to look up the meaning of Tao (Taoism) to understand its true meaning. Hey, I’m just a simple girl and don’t believe in making things sound smart or fancy job titles as those aren’t making you a better designer. The strength lies in what you create and not in what you call it :)

Greenpeace Green my Apple project

It doesn’t happen that often that we receive an unusual project request. You know, *that* project that makes your eyebrows raise and where you need some time to think about it before agreeing to it. That’s exactly what happened to us a few months ago…

Deadlines kill inspiration

Picture this: you are sitting along the river in beautiful surroundings creating what’s bound to be your best work yet and you aren’t feeling pressured. Sounds lovely, isn’t it? Too bad it isn’t reality. Now there seems to be an almost impossible deadline around every corner.

Print going the way of the dinosaur?

Last week I linked to a cool new website called ”A Brief Message” by Khoi Vinh and Liz Danzico, which features design opinions expressed in short form - 200 words or less. The first article there was written by Steven Heller and was about print being as good as dead. As always opinions differ and with this article I’ll try to write down my thoughts about it. Unfortunately I didn’t stick to the 200 words limit :)

PANTONE unveils GoeSystem, 2000 colors added

It has been some time since we last talked about being a print designer. How fun and exciting the web can be it’s still no replacement to physically holding something you created in your hands. An essential tool in doing that is Pantone, you know the industry standard for color specification introduced 45 years ago. The designers landscape has changed a lot in those years and it’s time for something new.

Normally I don’t spend any time looking at advertising because I don’t watch live TV anymore. We own a HD recorder and we cut out all commercial blocks so that our favorite shows contains no mood spoilers. Once in a while a spot comes along that makes you forget it’s advertising.

What a designer has to do when looking for a job

If I take a trip down memory lane to the time that I was looking for a job, I immediately remember very vividly how hard it was to get noticed or heard. I’m talking pre-internet days so things were handled via snail mail. If you were lucky, you got invited for an interview to show your portfolio and hope for the best. So fresh out of school with nothing much to show from the ‘real’ world in my portfolio, except for school work was a hard nut to crack to be honest. Even desktop publishing was in its early days so most of my work consisted of hand crafted dummies, painted logos and lots of sketches, paintings and drawings.
