Mac nostalgia

Today I’m going to take you back to my first adventures on a computer, an Apple Macintosh with system 7. Back in 1992 I started my business on an Apple Quadra 700 with system 7 with 8 MB of RAM and a 140 MB hard drisk. Before this I had my very first steps in Adobe Illustrator 3 on a Macintosh IIf with system 6. That’s when I learned to create logos, illustrations and layouts on a computer. And boy did I love working on it! It made me realize where the future of graphic design was going.

Itunes Music Store Europe in June?

2 comments 2004 at 03.11 am posted by Veerle Pieters

According to the French Macplus website our patience may be rewarded. If this report is accurate we could see the iTunes Music Store go live as soon as June. The European store is currently undergoing a live testing phase. As it looks now the store is scheduled to open in mid-June but could see delays until no later than September. A delay beyond June would somehow be attributed to the launch of 4 competitive online European music services, which are set to open in October.

PowerBook G5 still a year away so…

New toys at the office today! Not so long ago I wrote about Apple’s latest PowerBooks and that I will skip this update and hold out for a PowerBook G5. Well now I changed my mind and bought a new 17” PowerBook G4. The G5 is still probably a year away. We got a very good price from our Apple dealer and 14 days ago it was ordered.

It was a build to order machine since I requested a faster HD and an extra 512MB Ram. So to keep it short and sweet today all the toys arrived at the office. So now we’re also equipped to do some video conferencing :-)

So the only thing still not arrived is our Xserve G5. Apparently Apple has some delivery problems with the optional Xraid card. We need such a card for Raid 5. Xserve even duals are already arriving in quantities according to Macline.

It’s always a joy to unwrap and look at the attention to detail with new Apple products. Boy would I love to design the packaging for these products, not only would I know what’s coming but also make money ;-)

You can see a short unwrapping story of the 17” PowerBook here.

CSS support in Safari

The developer connection at Apple has put a page online where you can quickly discover how far along CSS support is in Safari. All tags are linked to W3C for more explanation what they stand for. Even for Windows users this link can be handy since a good webdesigner should develop cross platform.

Fontrendering on Mac OS X and Windows XP

I was reading Jeffrey Zeldman’s post “I would like to buy the world a Mac“ where he talks about using pixellated text when designing in Photoshop because most of the world will see it that way. He has a point there because not everybody has updated to Windows XP and even if they are ClearType is off by default. Most users I know don’t even have a clue that it is there in the first place.

Min-height will be supported in Safari’s next update

I’ve read on Dave Hyatt‘s weblog that he implemented the support for min-heigth and max-height into Safari. This is great news for CSS developers since this is a very handy property.

New iBooks and PowerBooks

Ok, still no PowerBook G5, so personally I will not buy one of these but this was a much needed update to the portable line. The rumors for these machines already started way-back in 2003. First let's take a look at the new iBooks.

  • 12-inch iBook
  • 1GHZ G4
  • iLife '04
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 with 32MB of DDR SDRAM
  • Up to 1.25 GB RAM
  • Starting at $1099
  • 14-inch iBook
  • Up to 1.2GHZ
  • iLlife '04
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 with 32MB of DDR SDRAM
  • Optional 4X SuperDrive
  • Starting at $1299

The pro-line also got an update. Here are the specs:

  • 12.1-inch PowerBook/15.2-inch
  • NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 with 64MB of DDR SDRAM
  • 1.33GHz G4
  • 256MB DDR333 SDRAM
  • 15.2-inch PowerBook/17-inch
  • 1.5GHz G4
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 64MB of DDR SDRAM
  • 512MB DDR333 SDRAM

All in all not bad, certainly those top machines. But still let's hope that the next round of updates to the portable line will bring the G5. Fingers crossed that it will be this year. Maybe by then all the G5 production trouble will be resolved. This is affecting everyone because our new Xserve is still not arrived. We've been down this road with Motorola and everybody was hoping that all that was resolved with IBM.

Peter Norton is no longer Doctor Mac!

7 comments 2004 at 05.57 am posted by Veerle Pieters

First it was rumor but now it’s official Symantec has stopped development of Norton Utilities for Macintosh and Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh. Symantec will concentrate its efforts solely on Internet security products for the Mac. Norton Utilities and SystemWorks on PC are not affected by this decision.
