Recab from a live coverage at Apple Expo Paris

The keynote was attended by more then 7000 people. When Phill Shiller came on stage he said “Apple Expo is going to be amazing”. He also talked about Steve that he is recovering very well and that he will be back at Cupertino in September. Apparently many Apple folks are thinking along the lines of September can’t come soon enough.

Longhorn, HP iPod and the all new iMac

Longhorn on a diet

There’s much going on in the computer industry these days, for example on Friday Microsoft said it would cut back one of the major features that would make Longhorn a revolution “WinFS”. WinFS promised to be a smart file storage system that would make searching a whole lot easier then when using separate search programs. Apple will have a similar feature called “Spotlight” ready in Tiger in the first half of 2005. In the coming days we will also know if there will be cut-backs in “Avalon” Microsoft’s equivalent of Apple’s Quartz rendering engine. With all those axes they plan on getting it out the door in late 2006. In other words “Longhorn” sounds awfully like the good old Copland days. Copland was a much hyped Apple system that was never released.

iPod Mini and Xserve G5 on its way

Finally I took the plunge and ordered my iPod Mini and guess which color ... Pink ;-) I decided to go for the Mini because I really like its small size and I don’t need all my songs on it all the time. Besides, 1000 songs is more then enough for me. When I’ll be using my iPod it will be for a few hours tops, not for days and days (of course that is me talking now… who knows :-D). And if I’m on holiday or on a business trip I have my PowerBook at hand, so I can switch now and then or use the On-the-go playlist feature.

A glimps into the future iPod

The company (Portal Player) that produces the chip that drives the Apple’s iPod is getting ready to be featured on the Stock Exchange. The main reason for this is that they are hoping to raise $75 Million for future investments. So why is this interesting you ask? Well, to be featured on the Stock Exchange they need to file all kind of documents about the company and that’s where it gets interesting.

Apple’s Dashboard

My initial reaction to Dashboard was like most people “it’s just like Konfabulator”. As you know Konfabulator is a JavaScript runtime engine. If you look on Apple’s Dashboard page it says “build your own widgets using the JavaScript language”, but that’s sort of misleading. With some clarification provided by Dave Hyatt, it looks like Dashboard will be more then just JavaScript. The Dashboard widgets are in fact just Web pages. Every widget can hold CSS2, DOM2, JS, HTML, XMLHttpRequest, Flash, Quicktime, Java, etc. With this knowledge the possibilities are more accessible for people like me with limited knowledge of JavaScript.

WWDC announcements

There were 3500 registered developers at the WWSC, a 17% increase over last year. At last the new displays are here! I’ve been waiting for them almost 6 months and now I’m in the market for such a 30 inch beauty. There are 3 new displays: 20, 23 and 30 inch. The 20 inch has a resolution of 1680x1050 and a DVI Interface. The middle one (23 inch) has a resolution of 1920x1200 and also a DVI Interface. The big one has a mind-blowing resolution of 2560x1600! and has a DualLink DVI Interface and will cost 3299 Dollars. The 30 inch will need a special video card which costs 599 dollar.

My Tiger wish-list

Today is the day that most of us Mac users have been waiting for. At 10 AM San Francisco time Steve Jobs will unveil 10.4 aka “Tiger”. Unlike last year there will be no broadcast of the event. Good news is that we have somebody at the WWDC and if luck is on our side I should receive live updates through iChat/iSight(?) and will post them on my blog. In its boldest move to date Apple is already displaying some banners at the WWDC which sends a pretty clear picture about Apple’s feelings towards Microsoft upcoming operating system.

New G5 is out!

2 comments 2004 at 07.20 am posted by Veerle

Today Apple released an update to it’s PowerMac line. You can now choose between a dual 1.8 Ghz and a dual 2.0 Ghz. The top-of-the-line is a dual 2.5 Ghz.  So what’s amazing about this? To cool, Apple designed a sophisticated liquid cooling system that takes off the heat without bumping up the noise. Mac OS X dynamically adjusts the flow of the fluid and the speed of the fans based on temperature. So it’s safe to assume that this machine will be quiet.

Steve Jobs will reveal everything at this years World Wide Developers Conference 2004 taken place from June 28th till July 2nd in San Francisco. The slogan alone makes me just more curious “Innovation never sleeps. Preview the highly evolved Mac OS X “Tiger”
