Using Spotlight to index external volumes

We at Duoh! use our Xserve to store all work and were wondering why Apple didn’t create an option in the interface to index external volumes with Spotlight. Or maybe it isn’t obvious enough to me and I didn’t find it yet? If we perform a search, 99% of the time it will be on an external mounted volume.

TIGER today at 6 PM

I’ll bet it is a general feeling among fellow Mac users that it has been a long two weeks since TIGER got announced. Now it is only a matter of counting down the hours until the official launch at 6 PM this evening. I am going to collect my copy at IT Pro in Ghent, not my favourite choice but it is the closest one to home and they can’t mess up a box, however you never know :-p

Today we celebrate 4 years of Mac OS X

Today will go down in history as Mac OS X’s official 4th birthday. Let’s take a drive down memory lane. It was 1996 and Apple was rotten to the core. I even remember that I explored switching to Windows because of the thought that Apple really could disappear. At that time it was also clear that Copland was vapor ware and Apple was really desperate for a new operating system. Everybody thought it would be BeOS but in a surprise move the CEO at that Gill Amelio announced that Apple had bought NEXT.

Our favorite CEO turned 50 yesterday

Steve JobsYesterday our favorite CEO turned 50. Born under the name Steven Paul Jobs on February 24, 1955 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

He grew up as a child in Mountain View and Los Altos, Calif., an area that later became known as Silicon Valley. Together with his friend Steve Wozniak he founded a company called Apple Computer in 1976 in Jobs family garage. In 1984 something happened that later had an affect on my personal life namely the birth of the Macintosh, the first commercially successful computer with a graphical user interface.

Jobs was forced out of Apple in 1985 but thanks to Gill Amelio who bought NEXT, Jobs returned to his roots. And we all know that since he’s back Apple is on the roll and the future never looked any better. There are even signs on the wall that Apple will get into PVR world by buying TIVO but that’s still a rumor so far.

So thank you Steve for all those wonderful years of Macintosh pleasure you have given me. Maybe a day late (busy you know the drill) but here is my happy birthday to you. I wish you many more “One more things” and continually innovating the IT Industry.

If you’re in the market for one of those beautiful Apple Cinema Displays 2005 may be a great start because Apple just quietly dropped prices for those displays.

  • 20” Cinema: 1029 Euro coming from 1499 Euro
  • 23” Cinema: 1858,99 Euro coming from 2329 Euro
  • 30” Cinema: 3089 Euro coming from 3839 Euro

In case you didn’t know the 20 and 23” are PC compatible. That wasn’t the only news today. Apple’s top server line now has a dual 2.3 Ghz G5 Xserve and Xsan, Apple’s SAN file system for Mac OS X is also shipping. The iMac has also got a nice price cut of minimum 100 Euro.

Thunderbird’s Extreme Mac-over

If you’ve ever tried to create good-looking icons then you probably know that some icons can be a real pain, especially getting the message(purpose) across can be difficult. My motto is a program has to look good or otherwise I will loose interest in it even when it has amazing useful features.

My patience is no longer being tested!

In the past I’ve written some articles to show my disappointment in the fact that the iTunes Music store wasn’t available in Belgium. It took way too long so I waited impatiently to enjoy the simplicity of buying.

iTunes Affiliation Scheme cool or not?

15 comments 2004 at 02.38 am posted by Veerle Pieters

This sounds very interesting and I think this idea has great potential since most bloggers already link to iTunes or Amazon anyway. This iTunes Affiliation Scheme will make it possible to earn a little money by showing your musical taste to your readers. Personally I find those music links interesting because it’s a great way to discover otherwise unknown music. It’s not all intrusive or annoying, at least not to me.
